I really, really HATE the current state of vtubing.
No hate to the real people behind the models, I (mostly) respect them for taking such a long time out of their days and lives as a whole to play the role of the character they are.
idk if I can say “I hate vtubers” because they’re still real people, just playing a character so thats why I chose the title.
Tbh I really hate most vtubers and the culture that surrounds it except for like, Giwi, Rubberross (if you can consider him a vtuber) and buffpup mostly cause she’s hot

You’re telling me that in the infinite expanse of vtubing, where you can literally be ANYONE and play ANY kind of character, all of the popular ones are just hot anime women? Why? Like trying to sit through most vtuber‘s streams are fucking insufferable because of how steeped in the stank of weeb culture it is, unfunny sex jokes, constant remarks about how hot they are, and the weird parasocial relationships that people make with them is really, really weird.

Even more niche vtubers follow that sort of style, I like Giwi because she‘s funny and does fun drawings, I like robberross because his avatar is cute and I just like rubber Ross. I understand the appeal, yeah buffpup is hot but once again, IT’S ALL SEXY ANIME CHARACTERS
and if it’s not hot anime woman that does the “mommy voice” for her chat and has tits with the mass of meteorites, it’s weird jackasses like the faithful sheriff peanut guy or whatever

Because the episode was actually a crossover with Steven Universe, which made it technically “not an Uncle Grandpa episode”, in a way, so it didn’t get removed as it was still part of the SU catalogue of episodes.
The popular ones are hot women because theyre hot women, there is thousands of non gooner-centered vtubers out there that are incredible but can't get popular because the Vtuber industry is unforgiving and crazy over saturated
Im subscribed to probably 8 or 9 vtubers (through yt shorts) that have less then 10k subs and are far more entertaining than any mainstream vtubers, you just need to look for good ones
Hololive is also good!! Yea there's a good handful who's main thing is being 'freaky' but there's like well over 60 talents in total & like 20 (with like an exception or two) that are English based and aren't nearly as gooner/loli-esque as ShyLilly, Sarui, Saba etc
I don't really want to get to the brink of delusion but I do feel like the Hololive talents are one of the few talents in an agency that feel the most sincere, at least for me.
Especially in this cutthroat cynical time of the vtuber industry.
I completely agree, I'd say its because of their original idea of being virtual idols and having stricter guidelines for what they can and can't do so they don't have to stoop to gooner appealing and get to be more genuine

Aamna is fairly niche, she does alot of song covers and has an amazing voice, but might be on some kind of hiatus not sure
Pipkin Pippa is part of an agency called Phase-Connect and is really funny love her
Chibi Doki is a popular vtuber that might sound/look off putting since her model might fall under child-looking but I promise you she's genuinely just a lunatic that plays random games and yells & burps alot
Cyyu & Amalee are both popular vtubers, as well as voice actors (Cyyu voices Deadpool in Marvel Rivals, Amalee voices dub Ai from Love is War & Uta from One Piece) they also have released plenty of anime opening and other song covers & have been doing youtube stuff for a while, I hold each very close to my heart
Delutaya is a fairly nicheJapanese vtuber who very briefly was part of Hololive (the biggest vtuber agency) but had to go independent due to drama popping up around her debut, she does Karaoke streams like 3 times a week and is amazing
Dokibird is another popular vtuber who was originally part of an agency called Nijisanji but got terminated because her managers and their corporate crew were some of the worst people in the world & treated her and other talents horribly (look up Selen Tatsuki Drama if your interested) but rebranded herself as an independent vtuber and is doing far better than she ever was
Pretty much all of Hololive is great too, though a few members are more loli & goon bait i will admit, that doesn't mean the rest aren't good, because theyre all genuinely amazing and incredible
Greibach is another niche vtuber, he recently debuted new a model that is technically goon bait but for the female gaze but makes interest yt shorts (and maybe streams idk)
HimeHina are a popular japanese vtuber duo that nearly exclusively makes music but also has membership streams on YouTube
Hayate is a niche Japanese vtuber who ive been subscribed to for like 6 years cuz she had an Ad on yt for a fake energy drink which was amazing, might also be on hiatus idk

I know Melody was a thing, but the bigger ones really don't focus on "gooner" content. That's a very outdated and prejudiced view. Gooner "material" may be the only thing reaching you, but that's not their content.
A lot of them are very gooner humor based too. I think that we're just so desensitized to goon stuff that you dont realize how much it is. Just the character design is enough for a lot of them. "yeah but [ ] is more gooner", yeah sure that doesn't make the other ones not sexualized. Melody went full route but a lot of them are proportionally. Content of some arent focused on it but they still retweet nfsw art of their characters, make sexy figurines, do all the goon jokes you can think of. I mean...
I was into vtubers like 5 years ago but I only watched clips and was more into the tech that went into it. However, I was in a very different mental state back then. I worked night shifts and was incredibly lonely because all my friends had opposite schedules of me.
There's a vtuber named GirlDM who, at the time, had a super advanced model that tracked like every motion her face could make, and I thought that was cool. She also made music and I enjoyed her voice. And made a point to make her streams family friendly.
No clue what she's up to now though.
There was also a Christian vtuber named Abigail that used her streams to teach Christianity and spread good vibes. Again, super lonely. But that was my Sunday nights. I enjoyed the little bit of streams for those I watched. She was very family friendly and I was a small part of her community, even was part of her discord. I helped her get a game to work properly one time, but that's the only interaction I ever personally had with her. She was nice though.
However, I do not watch any streams for anyone, I just don't have the attention span. I'd rather just hang out with my friends online than watch someone else hang out with their friends.
I'm 27 now, I don't have time or attention span or desire to sit and watch anime girls play games anymore.

Because most of the main stream vtubers have 0 drama or stress. If I see Minto is playing a game I know I can just listen to her yap and die a lot in game, with zero real life drama or politics etc
Idk about that, I have a friend who recently started VTubing as an excuse to train his chinese(he *is* chinese, but mostly talks in italian or english so he's not super fluent like he'd like to be) while he plays some games and he's a pretty chill guy

There's no weird lewd motive, I don't care about her avatar and just have her on a different monitor singing and yapping while I'm working. Which is exactly how most I've seen in the community handle the content, even the vtubers joke about just being on a second monitor in the background
Basically everyone I know who likes vtubers says the same thing, it's because it's easy escapism to find happy people. Some vtubers obviously have drama, but the main stream ones purposely don't bring up anything stressful IRL, you just put them on the background while you are working and listen to them yap while they badly play a game

Because female streamers deal with nonstop harassment and stalking, and have to spend hours putting on make up just to stream. I don't blame them not wanting to deal with all of that
For the viewer side, we are weebs so we already like anime in the first place, and 99% of the vtubers are also weebs. Y'all act like this is some mind bending concept, but it's just like how streamers for most of the early internet didn't show their face and just streamed with a squiggly drawing avatar and didn't show their faces
I get it from the angle of like… wanting an online presence but not wanting to show your actual face, but I wish the personas they put on were more creative
VTubing would be cool if they treated it like an ARG where they are fully immersed in the character and viewers could mess with the storyline. Imagine someone who's stuck in a bunker in an alternate timeline where the apocalypse occurs and their only way of survival would be through streaming his experience to alternate timelines in hopes of aide.
Oh! Or you could be an alien trying to understand human concepts and have viewer call-ins where you act like a complete fucking dumbass hoping that your human caller can explain concept to you like "Hatsune-miku" and "taxes" and "anti-disestablishmentarianism" and...

What about a VTuber that is actually a bundle of rats in a trench coat and every day a different rat is on top controlling the other rats kind of like Ratatouille but instead of a human it's a bunch of rats in a humanoid shape and each rat has a different voice so you'd switch through voices and personalities for different rats and--
My reason for thinking of maybe becoming a vtuber (or maybe pngtuber) is that I do not want to show my face but I would like my channel to have a face. And maybe do a bit of character stuff (the character would be a Chiss version of me, maybe somewhat different though and possibly I would have to make it legally distinct from a Star Wars Chiss? Idk).
Neuro and the community around her and Vedal are my prime examples of “AI isn’t bad, it’s just people aren’t using it right.”
Most people are there for Vedal and his development streams to then see the AI that results and basically just do long form testing. She is by far and away the most advanced AI content creator ever and an excellent example of how AI is just way better as an assistant than as a replacement.
I mean Vtubing kind of literally started off as an anime girl thing? Kizunai Ai was one of the first (even if googling "ai vtuber" brings up unfortunate results now)
That is just what is most popular, I don't like it but it is mostly because it originates from internet and weeb communities, it is what it is. I really enjoy vtubers that make their model something unique and interesting (like dran, Pezz, Bignosebug) but you're also gonna have the ones who are good streamers and make cool content but don have an outstanding model
Otakus/Gooners are the most interested in 2D characters coming alive, so it only makes sense that the media where you can dress up as a Waifu Puppet and interact with their fans would be so appealing to this culture. People interested in other media are already well fed with regular youtubers and streamers, sure, there's niche's to stratch with Vtuber tech, but the BIGGEST target audience are Otakus/Gooners. Not to mention they've shown to be hella loyal and supportive, throwing tons of Money at whatever character they like that most (just look at Gacha games)
honestly im fine with vtubers (tho most could try not to be freaky when it comes to their models and jokes.) im just not a fan of the ones that have a high pitched voice.
A vtuber i enjoy watching sometimes ran into this exact problem: She recently changed from a standard model to a chibi One, but the view count plummeted because She no longer had tits probably.

Streaming really is only fun at the small scale where you can chat with the streamer and the community is everyone and the streamer interacting with each other. It’s the only way to bridge the lulls that most games not called Ace Combat have.
At some point, streaming is just YouTubers making their footage collection process public for people to view. It doesn’t really add that much except for the rare high moments that are better experienced in a curated long form video.
Nah I mean watching them. I get it being a streamer, chatting to all sorts while doing whatever it is, but watching someone do whatever, that’s what i don’t get
Excluding the usual factor of the content they’re making that is probably also being made as regular videos, It’s like having someone to talk to about your favourite thing while also being surrounded by people who have similar interests to you so you can talk to them too. Kind of like an online friend but way bigger, I guess? I don’t know how to explain it. Plus it lets you experience certain things you know you won’t touch/do on your own in a more comfortable zone.
I don’t watch them, except for occasionally the RubberRoss group doing art stuff, but I do appreciate the few who get a little more creative with the designs. Like the one who has some sort of moth beast as a persona, sick as hell lol. Or Pumpkin with the black and white toon style. Theres so many generic anime clearly gooner-bait ones, and it’s so boring…
You know why man. Because being a cute anime girl just guarantee you a certain crowd. What icks me the most are Vtubers doing a fake voice, yo this thing makes my skin crawl. Not even talking the ones who 50%+ of their content is just reacting to stuff. This is truly some of the laziest content you can produce
I haven't seen many new vtubers, but everyone that I do watch now either just don't put on a game voice or dropped it after a few months.
I think most people would agree that hearing their natural voice is just way more comfortable, and it isn't that different in vtuber fandoms
Theres been a bigger shift into music even in indie spaces, not just corpo vtubers. Hololive especially you can just find absolute bangers, and often projects like music videos come out of talents' own wallet, I've seen a few talk about going into debt for their music projects so money is absolutely not the main focus for many of em
Also, reaction content is just terrible vtuber or not, although I don't remember many who do
My friends friend entire thing is centered around “come give mommy some kisses” she literally has a “mommy sucks you” redeem on twitch…there’s more boob detail than actual model detail. People who feed into porn addiction like that are the problem
See, my biggest issue with the anime avatars is they know exactly who they’re targeting. And ya know what? Good for them, it’s a market that pays up so why not. But my issue is that it makes the actual streams unbearable with the simp legions out and about. I just want to have some silly gobber playing a video game, not having to stop to thank “BigDickJim1985” for throwing money at them. I do know there are plenty of Vtubers who aren’t just anime girls, and I follow a few, but the interactivity just ruins it for me. Which is a weird thing to say, but I never really cared about people’s faces on camera anyways unless it’s like a presentation.

Vtubers have devolved into jingle-keys. Say the funny line to get all the donations rolling in. I'm not naming names, but when 80% of your fan interaction is just cutesy barks and the crowd goes WILD for it, maybe it's closer to a daycare than anything else.

Dejando de lado a SmolDidi si, es molesto que la mayoria de Vtubers populares esten sexualizadas (Ejemplo de esto en la comunidad latina del vtubing es NeneEfty (Bueno, tampoco es que aparte de eso sea una muy buena persona)). Hay creadores que no estan sexualizados, si. Pero no tienen el mismo reconocimiento.
Yea I 100% agree, but the obvious reason on why all the models are hot anime women is because it gets viewers lol. Alot of them do fall under just goonbait models and sex jokes, but some of them do actually have personality and are nice to watch. I personally like rosedoodle and saruei alot, even if their models appeal to gooners. On the other hand, there is the 3rd vtuber in the images, I think her name is milky something idk, the one with the MASSIVE HONKERS. that is her personality. All her clips I've seen are just her saying "ara ara" or something about her tits and nothing else. No hate to the person, but she's only popular because of her tits and the "mommy" persona she heavily plays into.
I have a huge issue specifically with a certain vtuber, which is gawr gura. As the gura vtuber, she was already kinda the "lolibait" stereotype, and played into it a little, lots of jokes about her being flat chested, and she was played more as "cute" then calli or kiara. Then when she left hololive and became an indie vtuber, sameko saba, her new model is just a fucking child. It is literally a fucking kid, not any adult features in there at all, and it makes me sick to my stomach. She knows as a popular vtuber that gooners will watch her and I just find it reprehensible.
It feels gross to say, but somehow the gura character felt more "mature" in some way, like maybe a teen or something (which is still bad, obviously), but the new saba character is literally just a kid.

I don’t tend to watch Vtubers as I treat them like every other content creator out there but I can recommend a few that don’t care about sex appeal and have pretty good humour from what I know. Please note I haven’t really watched the streams of all of the names I list but from what little I know they should fit your criteria.

If you’re looking for decent vtubers a PNGtuber/YouTuber by the name of “phisnom” had a stream where he tried to get his viewers into vtubers/recommending some to watch by showcasing some he liked due to the fact he plans on becoming a vtuber soon
Some of them are just too "quirky egirl" in their character personality. I googled Chibidoki cause I dont know who it was, it's a loli though. Maybe she's cool, but just the model is ugh...
she doesn't really lean into sexual stuff from my experience with her streams - her whole thing is being a 'loud silly gremlin' type. i'm not a fan of her model being loli-adjacent either but she's not the same as saba and them.
The critter (chibi) model is her main one, the other only exists as a joke i dont think ahe put much thought into it beyone looking recognisable to her main one
That’s probably one of the reasons why I don’t watch a lot of vtubers because it’s all very similar it’s like the isekai slop of streamers where it’s just copy and paste most of time. But then again streaming in general is very boring to me as a content genre
Heavy on the unfunny sex jokes steeped in weeb culture. A lot of them are REALLY unfunny, it's always some shit like "CHAT when he said come on, I thought he said CUM on me!". Or vtubers who think that panting and moaning and saying "step on me" and "mommy" when they see a sexy female character is peak comedy. I think if these people didn't have the vtuber avatar, a lot of people would recognize how actually annoying and unfunny a lot of them are. I guess they're playing up a character and ofc they have the animated avatar sometimes with a distinct personality but it all feels so forced, unnatural, and it's still plain unfunny and annoying a lot of the time.
lowkey feels so vindicating seeing a post like this because the points you mentioned are unironically why I just don't watch Vtubers at all. Like I don't even watch streamers outside of their Youtube content (and sometimes VODs but mostly cuz of JimmyHere), but whenever I come across any streamer content I always immediately click off it if they aren't using their real webcam
I also love content where they have an online persona/channel mascot that they actually go through the effort to animate (RussianBadger and That Gray Cartoon Pony come to mind first, I'm not 100% sure if that's correct but yeah) but I can also see why being a streamer means not being able to do something like this
oh yeah and shout out to those Vtubers who's shorts occasionally show up on my feed and EVERY TIME without fail the short is filled to the brim just with them screaming and being obnoxious constantly. Like how tf is ANYONE watching ts?????
I don't watch Vtubers but I remember watching a section video from a Vtuber who had an anime androgynous male avatar and every 2 and a half minutes his avatar would randomly grow large breasts and would bounce around for a few seconds before it went back to normal.
I hear you OP. I used to follow a LOT of really obscure and small vtubers, amd a few of them even went a different route for their models and content. They just couldn't survive in this space without following the trends, and most if not all of them retired, and I blame the community, because it rewards what you are mad about and what the ones I followed tried to shake off, and ignores anyone different or even punishes them (especially if you're trying to vtube as a person of color and are anyone exceot Heavenly). Lowkey I'm glad most of my oshis retired when they did, because now that I have had a foot out of the community for a while I'm noticing it's starting to get pretty toxic. The drama coming out of the community has become insane to wtiness.
Wait you can’t just say you hate when the vtubing scene relies on attraction and in the same breath admit you only watch a certain vtuber for being attractive. Not a fan of v-tubing at all and a good amount of the industry is kind of nasty to me but like this point makes no sense. watch some videos of monika cinnyroll, shes an outlier in the vtubing scene. she basically does her own stuff and isnt like the voice cracking, stridently obnoxious voice vtubers out there who sexualize their models for views
Saba hasn't even streamed in like a year at this point, you can't really even justify including her in a conversation about the "current" state of vtubing. A year is a long time in the vtubing world, especially considering vtubing didn't really become a thing until 2017, and didn't catch a foothold with western audiences until the pandemic
Most Vtubers are just gonna be attractive anime women. Just try to watch more streams, a lot of them are just chill and don't talk about goon stuff despite the sexy model.
I suggest Kinkymation, she literally draws porn but mostly just does gaming streams or character design reviews. And when she does talk about sex it's in a normal way and not in a gooner way.
I don’t even like V-Tubers but I follow this creator on Instagram and their model is literally just a cow plushie wearing a cowboy hat, and it sometimes transforms into a cow wearing a hamburger costume. That’s peak
I get that people dislike loli-like designs, but I wonder why you people only go after indies. No mention of Saba's previous identity or any other. Almost like you attack indies as they're easier targets.
