Gaming I hate how much "keep inventory" gets bashed.

Post image

Generally, I don't like it when people impose rules on how you should enjoy something-like saying that if you didn't play the same way I did, you're a fake fan.
But it bothers me even more when those arbitrary rules are applied to a game like Minecraft—a game that actively encourages creativity and doing whatever you want-so I don't understand why anyone would get upset over something the game itself offers you.

i truly do not get why people give so much of a shit about how other people play a primarily single-player game

167

u/GodButCursed 7h ago

Because people always want to feel superior. Same with people who claim that are certain build is to powerful and for noobs. Not in minecraft but other games

minecraft stealth archer build

Technically possible in minecraft dungeons.

And arguably more OP than a skyrim stealth archer lmao

I remember when Mina the Hollower announced they were adding, get this, difficulty options and for some reason it made part of the Internet really mad

I also remember seeing someone unironically say like "Enjoy your hollow victory" about using Izanagi-no-Okami in Persona 5 Royal (I think it's dlc but idr, but you can grab it for free really early on and it's the strongest persona in the game)

Obviously those are both just single player games but people are just like this

u/yellowfroglegs 6h ago edited 6h ago

i think people who think the only worthwhile game is an excessively difficult one have a superiority complex...

6

u/twolake68 6h ago

Persona 5 (at least Royal) isn't even that hard of a game normally lol

It's so weird how superior some people act over games.
Like I get things like Dark Souls not having difficulty settings as it is meant to be hard, but my lord why are people so pressed over someone wanting to have fun with a game?

I don't have any problem with people playing with keep inventory in their single player worlds, I just don't like when I'm gonna be playing in a server or realm and some of the players want to turn on keep inventory, it makes the game get stale really fast because the thing that makes survival mode enjoyable for me to begin with is having a bit of a challenge so the things I build and craft feel meaningful. That's the only situation where I'm gonna be arguing against keep inventory.

Minecraft's death system is absolute garbage, and though keeping your entire inventory isn't great, dropping it all on the ground in a giant cluster of items that despawns after only 5 minutes is worse

522

u/El_Mister_Caracol 7h ago

I still dont understand the 5 min rule, like its ok for other items because they can cause lag but items droped on death? Why? It doesnt make any sense

403

u/ImHoiby 7h ago

It should be in a "death chest" or something that then disappears if you die a certain number of times before collecting your stuff.

265

u/ayyerr32 7h ago

I use a datapack that creates a grave where you die with all your items inside, you right click it and get your stuff and some XP back. It's on vanilla tweaks website

92

u/ImHoiby 6h ago

That sounds great. I'm so tired of getting snipped by a skeleton so far away I can't see it that then makes all my stuff explode onto lava.

31

Personally I prefer the corpse mod. Same concept, but it functions more like equipping a kit when you get back.

18

u/RebornofAshes03 5h ago

I use a grave mod literally anytime I play, it’s pretty much the same thing except my super rare items that took me forever to get aren’t just tossed on the floor randomly. It should honestly be in vanilla in some form atp

u/betazoid_cuck 6h ago

Last I checked there is a free gravestone mod on marketplace for bedrock players too.

So like the shade from hollow knight. If you die again your items are lost but otherwise its waiting for you to go get it back.

8

u/ImHoiby 6h ago

Yeah, but you could also set the amount of chests that could be out there to be more forgiving.

3

u/betazoid_cuck 6h ago

The gravestone mod I use has this as an optional feature. They even start to get cracked and overgrown as you get closer to the death that despawns them.

4

u/SirMetaKnight82 6h ago

Probably more like Silksong, since you wouldn’t have to fight anything. It’d definitely be a much better system.

5

u/Practical_Entrance43 4h ago

I remember playing a mod that added gravestones and only the player that died would be able to open it, it saved a lot of pain for everyone.

2

u/EricTouch 4h ago

Since I didn't see anyone mention a specific name: Corrail Tombstone is a mod that does this. It also has a lot of other neat things but you could probably disable them if you only want the tombstones.

2

u/Really_Big_Turtle Igqirha lendlela nguqongqothwane 1h ago

Dark Souls did this well; you lose all your accumulated souls (both XP and currency) on death, but you can go back to where you died to pick it all up. It'll wait pretty much forever for you, but if you die before recovering them, it's GONE gone.

18

u/ThriceStrideDied 6h ago

To be fair, it only despawns if the chunk is loaded, so there’s not a huge threat to your items if you’re far away (unless you’re maxing out your render distance)

32

u/Legitimate-Failure 6h ago

It can be if you've been caving. You can be in the rendered chunk, just looking in a different branch for a while, or simply trying to descend faster.

47

u/LiterallyNoNamesFree 6h ago

Being able to lose 10s of hours of progress by one tiny slip up isn't good game design, it doesn't challenge the player in any way, it's just waiting for one tiny slip up which is inevitable to humans

5

u/LiterallyNoNamesFree 4h ago

→ More replies (1)

10

u/oscailte 5h ago

i disagree, it encourages you to play in a way that avoids you losing 10s of hours of progress when you die, make backup gear, consider what you're carrying when doing something dangerous, plan getting safely home when exploring etc.

having it off makes the game completely trivial, you can kill yourself to get home or fill hunger, there are no risks when getting resources, mobs are not a real threat. it removes the problem solving aspect of the game and turns it into a pure sandbox.

if you prefer to play with keep inventory on thats cool, but its not "bad game design" just because you dont like it.

13

u/Classic-Airport-8187 5h ago

i feel like it only gets bad in modded minecraft. like if you die in vanilla the worst that can happen is losing like, elytras or netherite gear. but in modded minecraft you can easily lose items that are the culimination of like a hundred hours of work or that are literally irreplaceable, and with mods dying to something you could’ve never predicted is a lot easier. which is why lots of mods add soulbound mechanics.

5

u/ZorroGrande 5h ago

I imagine that's why most decent modpacks have some kind of gravestone mod included as well.

→ More replies (3)

4

u/Lolzemeister 6h ago

yeah it does, it’s not impossible to not die in minecraft lol

11

u/the_second_best123 5h ago

That's part of the problem. Once you get netherite, there aren't really anything that could kill you besides carelessness. It feels a lot worse losing full enchanted netherite from slipping into the void with a chestplate on than dying to a hard but fun challenge. But Minecraft doesn't have any netherite-level challenges.

10

u/eatployment 6h ago

The thing was that it worked back in beta, equipment was easily replaceable, diamond was just a status symbol. Your stuff wasn't meant to be with you forever so losing it wasn't a big deal, but then enchanting was introduced and it sucks

5

u/Adventurous-Web-412 1h ago

mojang went an entirely wrong direction with the entire game. They straight up went from the game being about, I am going to say a shocker here, mining to then craft being a core game loop to just deciding "enchant your shit and you will never lose it". It became even worse once they added mending, but frankly by the point of unbreaking 3 it broke the scarcity levels of resources and the point of going mining. 35 diamonds and you genuinely never have to go get them again, full set and tools will last you indefinitely.

5

u/ruler14222 6h ago

it's amazing how far things can spread on death especially if you were near an edge when a zombie punches your last heart away

4

u/Caosin36 6h ago

I like how games like valheim do this, instead of random items on the ground, it spawn a gravestone with the owner's name

Now the skill drain system on the other hand

3

u/Ray_of_Sunshine0124 5h ago

I was playing Valheim yesterday and I said "I really appreciate not having the urgency to find my stuff again. Unlike some other suvival-crafting game"

2

u/Caosin36 4h ago

Skill drain is absolute shit tho, and not being able to disable it separately from keep inventory fucking sucks

4

u/Significant_Card_665 6h ago

I like tombstone mods for this reason. Knowing I will get my items back if I succeed in reaching them (usually the big hurdle) makes me actually feel like there’s a point. Game doesn’t get so easy that death doesn’t matter, but doesn’t turn into a sloggy hellshithole

3

u/noncedo-culli 3h ago

I forget what it's called, but I have a mod that leaves a 'corpse' of your body where you died, and you can go retrieve your items from it. It doesn't despawn til after you've taken all the items off it

4

u/alexzoin 6h ago

100% this. Minecraft has a massive design problem. It doesn't know what kind of game it wants to be. Games like Hollow Knight use a death run mechanic in an interesting way and to encourage the right player behaviors. In minecraft it just doesn't make sense.

u/longboytheeternal 5h ago

Ngl non keep inventory minecraft is a bit too harsh too, like if you fall on lava or the End's void you kinda just back to zero with no saying on the matter, for me i think Keep inventory shouldnt be part of the cheat category

185

u/APlanetWithANorth 7h ago

I saw a mod that allow you to keep your tools and armor, but lose everything else after death. I think it's a perfect middle ground

63

u/Randomguy32I 6h ago

Something that ive seen in other games is where you keep everything you had since your last time in a home base (maybe since the last time you slept), and any new materials get dropped

13

u/SmartyLuke 5h ago

Subnautica kinda works that way

2

u/Dismal_Rectangle 5h ago

That's more like just a save reload function

11

u/GoodPollo 5h ago

I mean not necessarily, all of the resources and items you gathered since leaving base aren't just going to respawn at their original source. If you lose an item it's still gone.

→ More replies (2)

8

u/Lowlevelintellect 6h ago

there's also mods that add a soulbound enchantment

3

u/aaerobrake 5h ago

Valheim has a custom difficulty setting that keeps your “equipped” items on your person and drops everything else into a grave that never despawns. Its a nice perfect balance and keeps me from getting into those endless death loops

2

u/Middle-Day-2302 6h ago

Yeah I agree with that. Normal death system is too harsh, but keep inventory isn't harsh enough because there's basically no downside to dying

→ More replies (1)

11

u/No-Scallion4998 7h ago

I was thinking there should be a block you can find in Ancient Cities called a Sculk Trap, which will get automatically placed in the nearest pocket of air on death and automatically store your items in it, forcing you to pay XP to get them back. I feel like it would be an interesting way to handle a non-cheat keep inventory, since you would need to grind XP to get your stuff back.

→ More replies (1)

33

u/Nat1Only 7h ago

That's why I spent a while developing a little system to store gear. Armour stands and chests hidden behind neat redstone doors and contraptions and it looked pretty cool too. I did that because I needed spare gear in case I died, then decided I might as well make it look cool. With keep inventory on I wouldn't have bothered or thought about it.

That's how I enjoy the game, making solutions to problems and often going over the top with it. You can enjoy it however you want.

→ More replies (4)

3

u/Flying_Line 6h ago

No hate if you play with keep inventory, it's your choice, but with how much having strong gear trivializes most of the game I think this is a fair threat for these dimensions that are specifically designed to be more challenging to have. You can also remove one of these threats by brewing fire resistance potions and you're usually not gonna be spending much time in the end anyway. Again, if you still don't find the risk of losing your items enjoyable feel free to play with keep inventory

Hot take, "cheating" in a single player game is perfectly fine. You don't want to deal with a mechanic, mod it out. Entertainment is for fun not bashing your head into a wall for "gamer points"

39

u/UnboxTheDogi 7h ago

I wouldnt even call it cheating since keep inventory is a in-Game feature

17

u/Lolzemeister 6h ago

well yeah but it’s literally under the ”cheats” section

5

u/Sayakalood 5h ago

Not anymore. It’s a command now, because of this exact line of thinking. The devs wanted to remove the stigma of Keep Inventory.

3

u/Vinyl_DjPon3 2h ago

That's dumb.

I miss when games embraced single player cheating as fun settings. Cheat codes were programmed in, even had specific menus to enter them in and turn them on.

The "line of thinking" problem is with people who think it's bad to cheat in a single player game. Cheat away, it's fun. It's still cheating.

4

u/Lolzemeister 5h ago

basically all commands are cheats

7

u/Sayakalood 4h ago

Hence why they decided not to call them cheats anymore. They’re commands to promote people playing the way they want to play.

121

u/PiterLine 7h ago

If keep inventory is cheating then so is using the debug menu (coordinates). Neither are cheating in my opinion, but using a feature meant strictly for debugging feels more cheaty than something called a game rule

25

u/GodButCursed 6h ago

To be fair in bedrock using coordinates is a normal game option that isnt considered cheating.

3

u/PiterLine 6h ago

Didn't know that since I have not played bedrock in a long while and never played it consistently, I thought they were under the same cheat menu there, am I misremembering or is that just something that was changed? Because both seem plausible honestly. In any case I stand by neither being cheating

2

u/GodButCursed 6h ago

Nope its not in the cheat menu. You can also change if you want to see what day it is ingame. The debug menu is way bigger and has more information tho.

2

u/PiterLine 6h ago

Ok had to google it, apparently they did use to be cheats, which again I think was dumb. The good news is that I don't have dementia

2

u/janTatesa 6h ago

Yeah I always played with reduced debug info. You can use maps markers lodestone compasses, all of them are diegetic unlike coordinates

2

u/VMelain 4h ago

2

u/Far_Delivery_4811 2h ago

They’re both cheating unless you’re a child or okay with playing with cheats on. Which is fine. It’s mostly single player.

2

u/Egogorka 2h ago

At one point there was no way to tweak gamerules from world creation (and in a time before that there was no such gamerule altogether), so it was definitely cheating back then cuz you needed op status to change it.

13

u/Z3R0Diro 7h ago

On one hand, I absolute DESPISE losing all of my items on a stupid death. On the other hand, I have a distaste for the lack of risk keep inventory 'suffers from'

The perfect middle ground for me is when you keep tools and armor on death.

4

u/dagreja 6h ago

A cool idea ive never seen implemented is having an exp cost associated with your gear. Leather/stone gear is free, iron/gold gear costs 1 level, diamond gear costs 2 levels. Auto-priority goes to diamond tools, then armor, and then down the list. So if you die with 10 levels, you keep 5 pieces of diamond gear and everything else drops.

Should mean youre never forced to go without a diamond pick, but if you die back to back you might get screwed. There could be different enchantments that interact with the mechanic. Maybe these values are normal difficulty, and hard would up the costs by 1 level.

Forgot netherite. Guess that'd be 3 levels and take priority over diamond.

2

u/eatployment 6h ago

Honestly that idea kinda slaps, i would love to see it implemented

thats why i consider terrarias inventory system better
you *can* lose your items when you die, its merely optional and the default is that your items stay with you after you die

keeping your items after dying should be a default, its honestly way better for a sandbox game

9

u/GregBoing 7h ago

my gaming hot take is that lowk I think terraria mediumcore is a lot more fun that minecraft without keep inventory, no keep inventory is just annoying and tedious and doesn't really add anything new to the game other than sometimes you lose a lot of progress over a split second mistake. It should definitely be off by default.

3

u/Visulth 3h ago

I played thousands of hours of mediumcore with my friends. We all play softcore now, just don't have the energy to re-equip all of our gear, tools, dyes, and cosmetics any more. Master Mode killed it for us.

All it needs is a gravestone mechanic that restores everything back to how it was and I'd be back in a heartbeat. Miss those dangerous 2 AM cave dives to get back to our shit, but the UI is way too tedious now.

Red even said he was thinking about tweaks to it like 6 years ago, but sadly no mention since...

2

u/GregBoing 2h ago

yeah, making a gravestone type thing that stored your items when you closed the world and would auto put items in the same slot they were in when you died would be lovely. having to rearrange your inventory whenever you die is one of the most annoying parts of mediumcore.

→ More replies (3)

4

u/Kitchen-Kiwi7942 7h ago

Either that or keep inventory should be made specific to each player instead if the group as a whole

3

u/MasutadoMiasma 6h ago edited 6h ago

Terraria and Minecraft have completely different progression systems, it's not even close to comparable.

Minecraft has a flat difficulty scale, but Terraria's difficulty scales with progress. Terraria encourages way more agressive gameplay than Minecraft so you're more likely to die as well.

Almost all the hostile enemies in Minecraft are completely optional to engage with, while fighting bosses is necessary for game progression in Terraria.

The holy trinity of rules I set in my worlds are always:

-Keep Inventory True
-Mob Griefing False
-Lava Converts to Source True

Yeah but see, some people don't really like creepers appearing behind them and making holes because for some reason creepers don't burn in daylight.

The way i do it is that i have an addon(pretty sure it's on curseforge but if not it's definitely on mcpedl) that specifically disables mob griefing from creepers while keeping it on for everything else

2

u/cheesesprite 6h ago

They don't burn because they aren't undead

u/VMelain 6h ago

That's literally the default in Terraria.

4

u/Adventurous-Web-412 5h ago

terraria without keep items would just be impossibly aids. Minecraft already has a lot of game design problems in vanilla (in my opinion a frankly rather mid game even if I love minecraft as a whole) and with keep inventory and already ridiculously easy game with very little risk becomes non existent. It also allows you to do stupid shit like dying to teleport.

Minecraft - do not lose inventory

Wym only useful for one npc you can buy things from MOST of the npcs

Very different games btw so its not really comparable especially because for terraria that is the DEFAULT mode, unlike Minecraft

Key difference here Is that in Terraria your inventory Is your whole game if you lose It you basicaly have to restart most of the game

2

u/Enchrypted 6h ago

A nice middle ground is tombstone mods that preserve your gear and prevents them from despawning or burning

2

u/austin_sketches 6h ago

You don’t really feel the weight of dying in the game with keep inventory on. There’s no longer a reason to be strategic.

I wouldn’t bash anyone for using it but i’ll never use it in my play through because i feel like at that point just play on peaceful. There’s no risk. The best feeling in minecraft is surviving and making it back to base IMO.

2

u/DaeganBro 6h ago

I play with keep inventory because unless I'm playing hardcore, I'm looking for a fun and casual experience. Death without it just feels too punishing for me personally, and that keeps me from doing basically anything. It's the same reason I don't really play extraction shooters or Terraria on Mediumcore

2

u/JakkaTheRat 6h ago

it's not even the items chance to disappear that pisses me off on death since the 5 minute rule only applies to loaded chunks, it's the xp. The enchantment system in retorspective is so fucking ass, turning mid-end game into 99% sitting around mob grinders

2

u/TheNinerGuy 6h ago

Loosing inventories is only ok on pvp server ,so pvp matter, gaining loot for other player ,or making you more responsable about attacking etc.

But on any type of pve only, that just a timewasting feature, making corpse run before continue playing is just not fun.

Imo.

Honestly anyone that bashes how others play Minecraft is a clown. It is a sandbox, the entire point is to do what you want there isn't a "wrong" way to play the game. Obviously if someone is like, hacking in a server or something that's different but single player is meant to be ultimate freedom, do what you want when you want

2

u/Megazard_exe 6h ago

Idk if it's just me but back when I started playing MC (1.2.5) keep inventory wasn't a thing so it probably is a oldhead MC player being an ass

2

u/Queer-and-scared 6h ago

I prefer keep inventory, but when I dont use it, I use gravestone mods. Bedrock has a free one I think on the add-ons.

2

u/ZioBenny97 Professional Hatemonger 6h ago

One of my biggest disappointment in switching from the old console version to bedock was finding out that a basic option in the 360 version is now considered a "cheat" that prevents you from gaining achievements. Not to mention the inability to manually save the world even offline.

2

u/rriverrrrrr 6h ago

I don’t play Minecraft for the challenge I play it to relax and be creative😭

2

u/DepthPitiful1208 6h ago

I enjoy keep inventory because I enjoy having fun and not having to backtrack every time I die

2

u/0-Nightshade-0 6h ago

Fr like why does it matter whenever or not keep inventory is on during my hard-core playthrough?

I swear people are too harsh somtimes :P

2

u/One-Trick-8027 5h ago

I think the hate comes from people saying it shouldn't be concidered a cheat, because it's "their way to play" and there's no such thing as cheating in a sandbox.

There's nothing wrong with using it if you like it better, but it IS a cheat whether you like it or not. You are circumventing one of the game's punishments. That IS textbook cheating.

u/RenkBruh 4h ago

minecraft players when I don't want to lose all my progress because 5 creepers decided to molest me in the dark

2

u/Agreeable_Pea5093 3h ago

Fr like I just wanna have fun at the game I payed for gimme a break it's not my fault I'm only good at 2D platformers

2

u/KanjiDaRifter 1h ago

The only reason I keep it off is because it bars me from earning achievements in my survival worlds (I’m a console player.)

2

u/Fabulous_Cry2978 1h ago

I've quit so many worlds after losing bodies I never play without it now. its just not worth losing hours of work to rng

Death in a game is a wound to my pride.

Losing inventory is redundant and frustrates me rather than anything else.

4

u/Traegs_ 6h ago

It really changes the way you play the game. And in my experience that way is less fun. You start treating death as a quick travel to get back to your home base and you're no longer afraid of getting lost. You end up just not paying as much attention to the world around you because the lack of consequence. It makes the game less engaging and it becomes boring. A survival game ought to have some challenge with a hint of fear to keep you interested.

I won't bash anyone that chooses to play that way, but I'll point out that it does change how it feels to play, and that it might feel worse to you.

On the plus side, the short time I did play with keep inventory on, I think it actually improved my game skill. With not fearing death I took on more challenging mob encounters with unexpected success. Before I would have approached situations far more cautiously. I was able to keep that bolder combat style when moving back to keep inventory off.

2

u/AndyBowBandy 6h ago

Game skill improvement is the key thing for me. If I don’t have keep inventory on my progress in the game comes to an absolute halt because I really suck at combat. Trying anything slightly dangerous is a sure fire way for me to die and lose all my shit. So I just avoid anything that’s too difficult to get to until I lose all interest in playing because I’m not doing anything after awhile. But it also feels cheap that I can jump off a cliff to get home quicker if I have keep inventory on.

There’s a data pack that came out recently that has keep inventory on as a default, but still offers a punishment for dying in the form of losing bonus hearts you can get. It’s called Matcha Flavored

Losing your inventory on death doesn't make things more difficult, just more tedious and annoying

2

u/Cowl_cat 7h ago

Which in turn makes it more difficult

1

u/Queen_Magix 7h ago

I cannot play with no keep inventory I will admit I have shitty patience but dying and loosing my stuff and I HAVE to find it in a short period of time or else it will disappear makes me want to jump off a cliff

1

u/1FrostySlime 7h ago

I when people talk about it being bashed when I virtually never see people talking shit about it and see way way way way more posts about people talking about how people shouldn't be talking shit about it

1

u/No_Bread_15 7h ago

For me minecraft was alaways about creativity more than survival

I always prefered to do rps and builds on creative and found the survival aspect boring not that it's bad i just don't like it

And yeah when i hear people saying i'm playing wrong it gets on my nerves too

LET ME BUILD WITHOUT WORRYING ABOUT MOBS

1

u/EvercraftRealm 7h ago

The fact that all the various gravestone addons on the Marketplace are achievement-friendly tells me all I need to know. Clearly the devs understand death doesn't need to be so harsh, but haven't gotten around to making a proper alternative.

1

u/fjne2145 7h ago

Minecraft has flat rbough progression where it is one of the few games, where i like the drop inventory mechanic. You can easily bounce back even when you loose your stash due the flat curve of advancing through "tiers" wood->stone->iron->diamond with the netherite equipment being the only one more annoyingly to replace but still due the handfull amounts of danger also not too punishing.

1

u/OkMarket5009 7h ago

Keep Inventory is part of the cheats? Only in Bedrock, not in Java. I like playing with it on because I am not a masochist. I hate farming materials, not farming in the husbandry way.

1

u/Curious_Freedom6419 7h ago

i mean if they just added in a grave stone like thing in the base game so if you die you don't lose all your items that would be nice

hell it can be a item that so long as its in your inventory and you die it protects the items

But yeah keep inventory is a must when i play, rather not lose the gear i spend hours getting to be lost

1

u/GrievousSayGenKenobi 7h ago

Real, I always say nobody should have an opinion on how you play literal single player games. Its the same recently with palworld and the 1.0 surge of players with a superiority complex saying you didnt really play the game if you put egg incubation to zero

1

u/NanoCat0407 7h ago

The game itself gets upset with people using Keep Inventory though

1

u/Prooteus 6h ago

Play however is the most fun for you as long as its not effecting others fun. I havent played minecraft in a very long time but whenever I did I would inevitably end up stopping because I died with a diamond pickaxe while exploring and had no idea how to get back to my body.

Toggling keep inventory on does change the game a good amount. Exploration isnt as scary/intense and you dont really need to keep track of where your going because if you get lost enough you can just die to go home. But with my terrible sense of direction I dont find it very fun to keep track of where I am and how I got there constantly.

1

u/icon_2040 6h ago

They can bash it all they want. I'm not doing corpse runs.

1

u/Prism-96 6h ago

grave stones are perfect tbh, there is always a risk to losing your stuff and you cant throw yourself into death to get back home, but there is no stress about lossing hours of progress over a single mistake

1

u/Express_Ad5083 6h ago

I like the fair balance that are graveyards for this purpose

1

u/ersenbatur 6h ago

The issue is that I start jumping from cliffs to fill my hunger or health when keep inventory is on. I know I could "control myself and not do it" but having an easy option I just do it idk

1

u/TheBedrockEnderman2 6h ago

To be honest I have seen 50 posts angry about the hate on KI and zero on anyone actually bashing it

1

u/BladeManEXE7 6h ago

I agree about playing with keep inventory if you want to, but something else about it for those who want the challenge:

I feel like the game should have some penalty for losing a fight, but losing everything in your inventory seems too harsh.

And in my experience, the whole system of corpse running makes it even worse.

Wanna get all your items back? Just run into the same challenge you just failed at, but unarmed this time. Wanna come back to it later once you have good enough gear to survive? But you've gotta rush back there before your items despawn! And a lot of the time will probably be spent trying to find the place where you died anyway!

I used to play modded minecraft a lot, and I solved this problem with a mod that let you enable keep inventory for your hotbar, offhand, and armor slots, but not your main inventory.

This not only lessened the penalty for losing a fight, but also added an interesting aspect of resource management to the game, using slots on your hotbar to store anything you don't want to lose.

Is that stack of redstone valuable enough to take up a slot on your hotbar? If so, what will you put away to make room for it? One of your other ores? One of your tools?

1

u/Tiktokbadsupport 6h ago

if you turn on cheats nobody will believe anything you accomplished in that world of course if that's something you

1

u/doctornoodlearms 6h ago

For Java I found a mod called "Keep Some Inventory" when you die instead of losing everything you will keep stuff like armor and weapons. And drop the other items, and exp. Additionally when everything drops it wont go everywhere and stays on the block you died on making it easier to actually get your items, and preventing them from landing in lava.

1

u/TheDarkBeast1487 6h ago

The only reason I don’t enable keep inventory on any of my genuine survival worlds is because to me it’s a catalyst and I usually use it as an excuse to play recklessly or use more cheats and commands in my play through because I already have keep inventory on.

1

u/Arif_Q 6h ago

another win for terraria

1

u/Skull_goodman 6h ago

I think the best change regular Minecraft could make to its death system would be to implement graves like many modpacks have. Instead of dumping all your items and forcing a 5 minute timer, putting a chest with all your loot where you died is a good way to still have a consequence for dying without it being fucking annoying. I do agree the keep inventory debate is stupid though.

1

u/Aetheraid 6h ago

I play keep inventory on palworld because when I die I know I'll run back there and get my stuff so it's just a waste of time

1

u/Zearria 6h ago

We use a mod that leaves a permanent grave stone and posts the coordinates in chat. So you could find it or even teleport if you want. The despawn rule is rough and end of the day it’s a game. Let people play however, when people get judgemental it gives me the ick

1

u/TruthPuzzleheaded866 6h ago

play as you like

i kind of hate how all the items blow up everywhere but i do enjoy death = your entire inventory is lost where you died as a nice punishment in a survival esque game, so i tend to go for gravestone mods

keep inventory is fine, its however you wanna play

1

u/gottagetanonymous 6h ago

Well you can do what you want but the world u make isn’t going to be impressive or anything to anyone. But if it’s fun to you then it’s fun to you

1

u/I-AM-WALL 6h ago

It’s not the way I play but I understand that games are meant to be fun. If it makes the game more enjoyable for a chunk of the player base who am I to ridicule?

1

u/uesernamehhhhhh 6h ago

You should get punished for dying otherwise its just a free recall. But right now retrieving your items is just anti fun. Having to Speedrun a bastion with only an iron helmet and a stone sword instantly knocks 5 days off my 2 week phase

1

u/Ex_Federa 6h ago

I've seen so many posts complaining about people complaining about keep inventory and not a single post or comment actually hating on keep inventory.

1

u/BunniGirlEnjoyer 6h ago

Play how you want, no clue why its considered 'bad'.

1

u/curiousjit321 5h ago

Im curious is it the option in general or are people just annoyed it gets forced onto them? I mean I didn’t do keep inventory when I played but I genuinely wouldn’t care if someone else in the world turned in on for themselves. I haven’t played in a while but I think they should make it a setting you can turn on individually bc personally I find it less fun when it’s on but idc if other people do it. I can just do my own world and play solo it’s not that deep

1

u/Sand_Hanitiz3r 5h ago

Its the exact same people who judge you for not running Dark Souls Blind folded, no headphones, fists only, hitless. The no fun allowed party if you will

1

u/Physical_Royal_1427 5h ago

fans of a game where you get to play however you want to when you play the game how you want to

1

u/Not_Yet_Unalived 5h ago

If Minecraft dropped a grave containing your inventory when you die i wouldn't hate how the mechanic works so much.

This is made even more infuriating when you can easily fall in lava or in the void, which destroy any item you had on you.

Any game with "lel, all your inventory splatter on the ground when you die" and no option to disable it isn't a game i'll play as i am here to have fun, and lose all my shit due to freak incidents or something coming up IRL is not my idea of fun.

1

u/Silly_Goober461 5h ago

I need the dread in the back of my mind that nothing is permanent and can blow away at any point

1

u/Miss-Library 5h ago

Mfs with keep inventory when they wanna return home

https://giphy.com/gifs/IkfbUjTyQBH2ZKzrB9

1

u/TheTrueEgahn 5h ago

While I do like keepInventory, I think the modded grave system is much better. I think there should be some player agency of keeping your stuff (or looting other players), since actually keeping them seems a bit too much for the survival genre.

1

u/Jabberminor 5h ago

To add to this, playing on peaceful.

I like to play Satisfactory and Factorio. I'll play them with keep inventory on and on peaceful because I play the game to build a big factory, not to deal with the stress of having to deal with enemies.

1

u/tsword5150 5h ago

I use to try and be a “purest” and punish my poor planning in games by doing shameful death runs back to my corpse. A light went off one day and I realized i am too busy to be wasting my time with this nonsense. I work all day and spend time with my wife and kid. When I have some free time I would like to not waste 30 minutes+ for a mistake.

1

u/evilpeenevil 5h ago

Just play the way you prefer, who cares what other people think. It shouldn't effect your enjoyment at all.

1

u/Artistic_Swing6759 5h ago

try out the matcha flavoured datapack

You would be boned with bound items

1

u/Son-Airys 5h ago

KeepInventory and mobGriefing are my staple forever.

1

u/IzzybearThebestdog 5h ago

Oooff keep inventory is such a hard one for me. The connivence and time save is stellar, but it takes one of the few difficulties and stressors out of what is now a very easy game. IMO a gravestone type mod is a better mid point where you can go get your items back with no time limit, but you can’t abuse it.

1

u/RSlashLazy 5h ago

I don’t get why mojang doesnt shit to a grave system for player item drops

1

u/SnowedCairn 5h ago

Some people cry about everything huh

1

u/IiteraIIy 5h ago

I think if you wanna play a difficult game, disable it. But if you just wanna have a chill, stress-free time with your buddies then it's great

1

u/panzerkampfwqgen 5h ago

The perfect middle ground is those mods that put all of your dropped items in some sort of storage (chest, skull, corpse, etc) that you can pick up once you get back to your body. Making them despawn after a short time is too punishing

1

u/IcePoemix 5h ago

I've seen more people complaining about keep inventory haters than people hating on keep inventory tbh
