Art & Fanworks I've come to dislike the "strong and interesting woman paired with a lame guy" trope, and wish people had the courage to make a strong/hot girl AND guy couples.
Yeah, the endless "strong dommy mommy girl that is somehow paired with a loser unremkarable, guy" starts to get annoying. It's dishonest and comes off as someone trying to insert themselves without having the decency to idealize themselves.
I wish people more people could appreciate couples where both the guy and girl are both remarkable, powerful, capable, and beautiful.

It's very 'unrealistic' to them that's why.Alot people on the Internet are insecure asf so they want a stronger and more confident individual to tale care of them. It's sad but that's how it is.
55
u/SageNineMusic 2h ago
That and to a degree its not just insecurity: the comedy comes from self insert characters being portrayed as lil guys / creatures
Portraying oneself as an Uber hot person? Cringe. Making yourself insert a low detailed lil freak next to a highly detailed focus on the piece? Humorous
That and when saying "big woman <3" it kinda makes sense to make the guy smol

Exactly, it’s not even the size gap, it’s the “main character dating a doodle” energy that makes it ridiculous

Funnily enough two of my friends have a muscular girlfriend and both of them said they would rather have their boyfriends take care of them.
They also said that a lot of the girls who are muscular in the gym thinks the same.
Now i can't prove anything and this is based from my personal life but it's still kinda sad how a lot of peoples view muscles as a dominating thing and ignore the character personality of insecurities because of it.

I don't think it's always that deep. Sometimes it's just a matter of preference. Personally I like both dynamics.

It's because horny-posting isn't socially acceptable for men. So they have to be safe-horny, which involves intentionally demasculinizing themselves to present as less of a threat.

Making a woman strong doesn’t mean you escape sexism your just objectifying woman in another way
40
u/throwaway553t4tgtg6 4h ago
honestly, while it can be cringe, I respect people who make handsome and capable original characters rather than just inserting a boring manequin
42
u/DinoBoy2005 4h ago edited 4h ago
That’s because they never do anything interesting with it. They always go “Strong Girl, Useless Boy”
Why not “Strong Girl, Smart Guy”
Or “Strong but crazy girl, Weak but stable guy”
Make the guy do something other than stand on the sidelines, have him be the brains to her brawn, or maybe have him be an emotional support for the girl so he can bring her back to earth when she’s having a tough time. Make him actually useful instead of a cheerleader.
16
u/3lizab3th333 3h ago
Ngl, as a strong girl who actively seeks out intelligent men with expertise in fields I lack in, I’d love to see a couple where the man is a logistical mastermind and is building a new civilzation through complex social engineering and diplomacy, and the woman is his greatest general and occassional bodyguard. Maybe she’d be a paladin or other tank class, and he’s a spellcaster/tactician in combat.

The Manhwa "The Greatest Estate Developer" is kinda like that. Main male character is incredibly knowledgeable but not physically powerful.

Kinda does why not point out he’s a warrior too, why isn’t she woman who loves her husband very much? Like from this is only character traits are that he is visibly smaller than her and married to her
5
u/melon_bunnn 2h ago
Because "strong wife and adoring husband" is the actual trope of this picture, the reverse is literally the norm.
12
u/NihilVacant 3h ago
It's a picture that specifically concentrates on female characters who are warriors and have a loving husband. The husband role is less relevant. He can be anyone (he can be a warrior too). There are still many more male warriors in pop culture, and these warriors often have loving wives. This picture shows a role reversal; a woman is a main character, and the male character supports her.
I interpreted a wife being bigger than the husband as the artistic choice. Since she is the center of attention in this trope, she is bigger.
It's just a simple picture that is supposed to show a sweet trope about a husband who loves his warrior wife. And that's basically it. I don't think this picture suggests that husbands have to necessarily be shorter or physically weaker.
Still, I would actually like to see more tall ladies and shorter guys in media, because it's quite rare. It's not like a shorter husband has to be physically weaker or that it makes him a loser. So it's not the trope that OP is criticizing.

u/Ryousan82 4h ago
I do love power couples, but sometimes a nice contrast provides narrative flavor. Or you, you can have one partner being a demigod in the battlefield...but asking them to cook or balance a budget? Disaster. Meaning that strengths can be complimentary without being equal.
12
u/SellClean4434 3h ago
Whenever I hear main couples being equal, it's always them being a power couple. What about both of them being losers in life trying to navigate it together somehow.
9
3
u/Ryousan82 3h ago
Its also an absolutely valid take. But that depends on the story you want to tell
1
23
u/Apprehensive-Wall632 4h ago
Well the reason is it’s a subversion of the other very come trope “strong masculine guy and his soft, delicate girlfriend”. Honestly I do love a good tag team. Jesse and James from team rocket for example. I know they aren’t dating or anything but they are a pair throughout the series and they match each other’s energy really well

Would be cool if there was more loser women in media in general who also get to be happy.
5
u/Yeeterphin 2h ago
You know what I’d really like? Two people that are considered losers and try to better each other in a relationship. It’s ruined a lost art and one person always has to be better than the other, but it’d be so compelling if you had two people who are miserable and they strive to be better for the other person.

Yeah I also hate this "lame and weak guy with the hot and brave woman" trope
I just find it unfunny and overdone.
It’s also the same type of humor as the "I want a dommy mommy" or the "I said no pickles but I’m too weak to correct the cashier so my wife has to say it instead, I love my wife ☺️"
Like it’s the guy who wants to be protected by his tall and strong wife while she stands up for him, takes care of him and loves him
It might sound problematic but I feel like these guys want to be treated like "women" while their wives have the "man" role
I’m not a macho guy but idk, it annoys me

u/Junior_Box_2800 2h ago
I see it as no different from women's romance novels with a more shy submissive woman and a loud confident outgoing guy, it's just the genders flipped. Esp nowadays where theres more shy less social and confident men congregating all in one place (online) wanting a more outgoing confident woman is a common fantasy. Plus it's seen as more "woke" and "safe horny" compared to wanting another type of woman
5
u/NwgrdrXI 4h ago edited 4h ago
Which reminds me of my growing frustration with some sides of the internet that are obsessed with any women who are anything but the daintest of pricesses only being interested in pegging
If I had no experience, I would think pegging is the most popular sex move by far
4
u/ApprehensiveCap6525 3h ago
What they should do if they like strong dominant women paired with submissive men (not gonna judge that shi, i like dominant women too) is to make it so that the man is just submissive around her and he is a badass when dealing with anybody else. Maybe she is the world's most feared soldier who can kill you with her pinky toe or some shit and he is a genius intelligence officer who likes to be nice and affable but can genuinely have your whole family whacked if you decide to get uppity with him.
It's even better if the two lovers have strengths that complement each other like a master thief and a renowned defense lawyer or sometning like that. I love that shit

u/SweetSweetAtaraxia 4h ago
You used alot of negative adjectives to describe *checks image* short guys.

1
u/Obvious_Catch8745 4h ago
I dunno, I’m on the fence about this. I can understand why you won’t like the interesting woman x boring guy pairing as it can come off as dull and a bit self-insert (on both parts). I also think that it can depend on execution as that pairing can turn into a power couple in their own right.

Alot of times it seems people fear to make normal wholesome couple stories and prefer over-the top of this two routes: 1. Extreme point is that couples bodies are different, to show their characters as alpha and omega or hierarchy in family 2. Most depressing, abusive, dehumanizing couple bringing their love down like titanic.
Now i don't hate second one but damn not all relationships are bad

Art imitates life and in real life people that are “great” have egos that prevent them from partnering up with other “great” people

u/BestSamiraNA1 2h ago
If they're both big and strong, you just get a superhero fantasy. If they're both not, you get normal people. If only the guy is big and strong, you get the same thing everyone's been doing forever. If just the girl is strong and the boy isn't, that's new and interesting (and also some kinda sub fantasy fulfillment for the artist). It's the best one right now

as someone who has dated losers and also extremely remarkable and powerful people, i agree with this sentiment, like sometimes you don't want a portable chud to put in your purse, i want someone i can take on all in the world actually
1
u/Speedemon42069 1h ago
Probably a self insert thing. You can insert yourself onto the guy. Other than that it’s probably a time saver.
1
u/BelltowerBats1979 1h ago
Because it's wish fulfillment meant for dudes who don't actually want to get up off their asses and work on themselves and would rather have someone much more interesting than them come into their lives and fix everything for them.
On that topic, call me a gooner, but why does most hentai/drawn porn have a detailed woman, but the guy is usually just a disembodied torso or just a floating dick? Yall are NOT gonna become gay if you see a detailed man in your porn lmao.

Its the pick me girl version of low ego and low status men. Its a self insert saying "ill let you dominate the relationship" in attempt to seem soft and "not like the other boys". Majority of it is fiction, women generally do like men who act like this.
1
u/Fox_Guy_Foxtail 55m ago
I think alot of it comes from the opposites attract mindset. Like sure strong woman and nothing burger man but the girl probably sees her partner as care free man and herself as overworked women.
Also be careful with this post you might summon a buch of women hating men

Here's another example. Iselda is a tall warrior lady, who has since retired to open up a map shop with her husband. Her husband, Cornifer is seemingly is nonathletic and nerdy, however, he manages to reach the darkest and most dangerous places of an abandoned kingdom that is crawling with enemies on his own to map them out.

u/Dakkahead 3h ago
It can be cleverly done. As both parties need their time to shine.
I present Firefly as my case. Wash and Zoey are married couple.
Zoey is a veteran of the brown coats and the secessionists war(I forgot what they called it) along with Mal. Wash is(was) a space faring pilot who can fly Serenity with confidence and great technical understanding.
Zoey is the mighty warrior, Wash is the, dare I say, meek pilot who hasn't hurt nobody. But they both have their times to shine and they love each other deeply.
I rest my case.
