I'm particularly curious about its meaning as a place name

I've been learning Armenian on AVC resource, currently I'm on B1 level. During listening to the dialogues I noticed that some dudes (not just one) pronounce words պետք է as պետիե or [pɛtʲ ɛ], and տաք է as տաքիե [tatʲɛ]. I've noticed this stuff in other words and phrases with "ke" combination in them as well. Is it some sort of regional phonetics?

My big Armenian-American family uses words that I have no idea if they’re actually accurate Armenian. Our grandparents were native speakers but they were from a generation that didn’t value passing it down. here’s what has come through though (apologies it’s a bit of a random list, mostly used when we were all little kids):

- Voodhig (butt)

- meds voodhig (big butt)

- shabig (an undershirt)

- Vahdig, some iterations are more like Vardig (underwear)

- maroon (yogurt)

- doodig (foot or toes?)

- tantig (aunt)

- Behran (mouth)

- yavrum (not sure I have an exact translation here but it’s always sort of used like “oh hunny”

- inch speces (how are you) with “shahd lovem“ as the response

would love to know if there’s seemingly any close actual origin on any of these!

So I notice something in Armenian about plural nouns. Yes, singular nouns with one syllable end with -եր and others with one syllable as well as the ones with two or more syllables end with -ներ, but when it comes to saying a number or an amount there is no suffix for the plurals. Is this correct?

For example, three books is երեք գիրք rather than երեք գիրքեր or երեք գիրքներ. Is it true that when it's talking about a specific number or amount of something in a noun there is no suffix added to the plural?

The Armenian layouts provided by the apple SUCK, that's the reason I downloaded a layout from App-store for my iPhone. But I can't find one for my mac.

The title kind-a explains it all but i will elaborate So basically i fell in love with armenia by 2 ways - just finding about it and seeing a little bit more, not that much people talk about this hidden gem - and 2 - eurovision. But how do I learn this? There is no duolingo on this, theres barely even app settings for this like tiktok, roblox, and twitter, not many resources and i feel they just teach you a small amount of it: like how verbs work, phrases, and a small amount of vocabulary. (I could be wrong.) I mean, what really do I have to learn this? I want to speak Eastern Armenian so badly, I only know the alphabet .. but i don't know if i can? Because I want to be fluent, but is there a thing that can teach u all the way to be fluent. I'm only 13 so Im not gonna be using money or doing online courses, I only have a notebook. I think one of the major differences between WA and EA that doesn't get talked about enough is the difference in diglossia between the two dialects. WA is like most languages in that the formal speech used in books, media, and professional settings is not too different from the way people speak in their homes. Eastern Armenian though... depending on the social context and a person's level of education, as well as how humble or pretentious they are, can have like 5 different levels of formality which can make the language complicated even for people born, raised, and educated in Armenia.

My only question is... why? Why such a high degree of diglossia between two varieties of the same language? I feel like to some degree Eastern Armenian is an artificial language constructed by Soviet scholars who took standardization too far.

Just thinking off the top of my head, I could honestly see a new kind of EA emerging in the coming decades that blends the two extreme ends of the spectrum into something neutral that sounds good in most settings. I can comment as an EA native that I really don't like the way qyartu street boys talk, but I find extremely grakan speech almost as annoying.

I was wondering if it was possible to say "mi mortsir". I speak WA, tho I haven’t learned it in school or anything, so it does sound kinda correct to me. Now I looked it up and the imperative forms for the word "mornal" shown were "mortsir" and "mi mornar" which also sound correct to me. Thank you!

How do you translate "toilet bowl" / "commode" into Western Armenian?

Same as title, what word is this? It apparently means "god" according to Athanasius Kircher. Sorry for the blurry image, had to zoom in.

I notice that it is pronounced like the "ye" in the English "yes" at the beginning of a word, and like "e" in English "let" elsewhere. Am I right?

Having built Western Armenian suggestions based on public domain Western Armenian sources, lots of old words have leaked into. I am myself Eastern Armenian speaker.
Volunteers are needed to test Western Armenian word suggestions and verify the interface, which was westernized with AI.

I'm an actor in the U.S. preparing to audition for a play where the family speaks Western Armenian. (My mom speaks Eastern Armenian, so there are some words she doesn't recognize.)

Can anyone who speaks Western Armenian let me know the pronunciation of the Armenian words here, which words are stressed, and how you would translate the phrase literally? (I can tell that the script's English translation captures the overall meaning, but I'd love to know what the words mean.)

I'm looking for help with these lines:

• Vahanə ūš é, artén mīst gūšana. Īr hant sankn-é.
• Īr amén még žamə ahakīn tram é! Šad sūghī bīdī nayī!!!
• Hajīs gét sir.

For the first one, I think it's

• VAHAN-eh OOSHe, arTEN meesht GOOshana. EER hAHnt tSAHnK-neh.

The script says it means, "Vahan's late, he's always late. That's his fault." Is "ūš" (pronounced OOSH) the root that means "late"? Is artén "always"? Which word correlates to "fault"?

Armenian is spoken by millions worldwide, but Duolingo still doesn't offer it. That gap feels huge, especially for diaspora communities where language schools are hard to find. Learning your heritage language shouldn't require moving or paying for private tutors.
I started a petition asking Duolingo to add Armenian to their platform. They've already shown they care about preserving endangered languages—they added Hawaiian and Navajo. Armenian has the same cultural weight and historical significance, and honestly, it's time.

Hi everyone! I’m Italian, my wife is Armenian, and we live outside Armenia. Our kids are learning Armenian, and we would really love for them to grow up actually speaking and understanding the language, even though they are not surrounded by it in everyday life.

We found it surprisingly difficult to find beginner resources that felt engaging enough for young children, so I ended up vibe-coding a small browser game for learning Armenian through letters, sounds, vocabulary, short stories, and mini-games.

A small warning: the original interface/explanations are in Italian, since I originally made it for our own children. I made an english version but I did not debug it thoroughly.

It is still very much a work in progress, and I’d be incredibly grateful for feedback from Armenian speakers, parents, and teachers — particularly on:

• language accuracy and pronunciation (I used a speech model in Azure, but human recordings are possible and part of the next steps)
• whether the progression makes sense for beginners
• cultural details
• anything that sounds unnatural, confusing, or simply wrong
• ideas that could make it more fun for children

I understand that this is a bit of a complicated question, especially when you consider how long it takes for a word to be considered "Armenian," like in the case of many Parthian and Persian words that have been in our language for so long that we don't even think of them as Iranian words anymore.

But, for the sake of this question, let's think of it like this: we'll consider words "purely Armenian" if they come from proto-indo-European, or from Hurrian and Urartian. What are the percentages for each of these three languages? How much of our language is made up of foreign vocabulary?

I'm planning to learn a little Armenian for business, and I thought, why not learn it from someone who also speaks fluent "developer"? 😄

I was in a shop where one of the workers stocking the shelves dropped something and said "fuck." He must've been 20 or so. I also heard another 30-something year old woman say "fuck" while speaking only in Armenian.

It sort of got me thinking... is this some emerging trend with people under 35? Armenian curse words are extremely taboo and generally can't be used the same way as English curse words for things like dropping something or bashing your foot into a rock. I'd imagine English curse words are a solution to this "problem."
