I’ve added CCS playlist here. This is where every new crab owner should binge and start here. If you have follow up questions, please post them! Most newbies think they have researched and seen the facts - this sub follows Crab Street and the LHCOS. We do not follow the HCA guidelines or really any others. This is where the bulk of our information and what we need to be doing should come from!

Help! Can anyone adopt my hermits Toronto or the GTA

Hi guys I love my hermits but for some unfortunate circumstances I have to leave the country and the country that I’m going to reside in does not allow entry to any type of hermit crabs so I can’t take them with me. I would love if anyone can take care of them till I figure out my papers and I can return to Canada, and if you guys would prefer to adopt I’m also open to that possibility cuz I gotta find a place for them before Sunday. You can take all their supplies and also both of their tanks. And I can send every month money for the care of them. I’m really desperate cuz I don’t really have a lot of time and at the moment someone else it’s already taking care of them but only for this week. Any help would be greatly appreciated thank you. (Names are Tristepin and Nausica) sorry for breaking the rules

Tank Question Tank mat feels hot to the touch

Hello I felt the heat mat thats at the back of my tank and it feels hot almost burning none of it is below the substrate and my tank humidity meter says 75°f for the temp but the heat mat is still hot. Just noticed this today and originally i had aluminum foil to keep in heat but now i have removed it. Its a glass tank. There is no on and off switch for the mat and no thermometer. Could this hurt my crab and if it gets to hot could it break the glass of my tank?

ā€¼ļøTRIGGER WARNINGā€¼ļø Crab Emergency (use NSFW Hermit crab help?

• Upvotes

I thought my boy was surface molting but things got weird in the tank due to technical failures that made the heat skyrocket and I found bugs which I initially thought were ants where my crab was (not on him but I didn’t want them to try to eat him or something so I gently moved him). I thought he had been molting and may be in the post molt phase, but when I noticed the bugs and had to move him my crab was stuck to the decoration he was on. I had to spray some water on the decoration to be able to move him off.

He didn’t even twitch through the process and when I smelled him he did smell a little unpleasant but not like a major dead fish smell the way mystery snails do. Is it normal for a crab to stick to something? Like he wasn’t holding on with his claws, it was like he fused to it (which is why I was careful not to just pull him off). He isn’t limp which is what it says dead hermit crabs do but I don’t know if he died while molting and is now stuck like this or if he could be alive. What do I even do in this situation?

Got Adrien (right) off of Marketplace. Poor baby was kept in a bone dry enclosure with no water or real food. I brought him home a few days ago and got him a nice enclosure (and a buddy!) I named them Rocky and Adrien because Project Hail Mary is PEAK!!
This is my first time owning hermit crabs so it’s a little scary but they are absolutely adorable

Crab Photo!! Eugene went on a lil adventure!

I woke up yesterday morning to find that Eugene wasn’t in her enclosure. I cleaned and searched for her allllll day with no luck. I was so sad and anxious, thinking the worst. I put out a food dish with honey peanut butter and applesauce with some water to try and lure her out. Idk if it worked but I did eventually find her. I found her underneath the table where I keep the enclosure bc i heard her little noises. She was a lil dusty (I keep her in the basement) but other than that she was all good! I took out the rope she used to escape and I sealed up where she got out. I feel so much better knowing she is home safe but she gave me quite a scare😭 I’m just glad to have her back where she belongs!

Help! (HELP??) The most CONFUSING thing happened while I was gone

2 crabs, they were chill last night, woke up and went to school this morning, got off and ran some errands. Came back home around 5pm. Crab 1 had MOLTED?? ON THE SURFACE?? Which is scary, but like I think itll be okay because I can just put a container over him and crab 2 will leave him be while he does his thing and in trying not to stress, i get a container ready and go to pick up crab one to place him more centered so I can fit the container. He pops out of the shell and looks at me, ITS CRAB 2?? IN CRAB 1'S SHELL??? So now im scared crab 2 did something to crab 1 because crab 2 is relatively new to the tank.. I pick up crab 2s old shell.. CRAB 1 IS IN THERE???? SO WHILE I WAS AT SCHOOL AND RAN ERRANDS NOT ONLY DID ONE CRAB FULLY SURFACE MOLT, THEY ALSO SWAPPED SHELLS?????

I collected pieces of crab 1s exo and set them next to him under the container (they eat them when theyre done molting, right? Thats what I was told, hoping im not wrong) but I looked inside his shell wuick and saw his antenna moving and his big claws reacted to me turning him over some and he scootched back into the shell more.. so hes moving and seems okay. But like.. WTF DID I COME BACK TO??? They haven't seemed to be violent or aggro with eachother and i supervised their whole first 2 days together and they were fine.. this isnt a sign of anything bad is it?? Or did crab 1 just conveniently change shells before/after(?) Molting and crab 2 just so happened to like his shell??

Neither seem injured.. sorry if this is long but it was so strange and confusing to come home to.

came across a few things at dollar tree that various creators on tiktok/ reddit suggested. i’m surprisingly pleased!!! the only thing that isn’t from dollar tree is the hamster wheel, which i purchased for about $8 at petco. i’m most excited about the lil hide for them that’s actually a fridge wine holder!!! thoughts?? any other suggestions? i wanna make it as fun and comfy for them as possible :,))))

p.s. i’m prob gonna add some fake grass or something to the inside of the lil shelves cause ik they’ll lose grip fast. i’m thinking of using for foraging enrichment. also, im totes aware there’s hot glue everywhere! i’m gonna def clean it up before it goes in their new tank.

Discussion New crab

Hey y’all! I currently have two fairly large crabs in a 30 gallon tank. I’ve been approved by lhcos and on their list of adopters for a while and just got a request to take one crab, also medium to large. I’ve had a little crab drama over shells from one of my crabs earlier this year when another crab had just come up from a molt but no aggression for a few months now, they seem healthy and happy. I guess I just need someone else to tell me it’s alright to take in another one, or to tell me I won’t have the space and it’s not a good idea. Thoughts?

Tank Photo Second Level Unlocked!

I am so excited! I finally added the second level to my base tank, and I couldn’t be happier with how it’s coming together.

These pictures were taken last night, so the lighting was already in its little twilight mode, which honestly makes the whole thing feel extra cozy.

I still have a few little details to add here and there, but the big milestone is done and after working to put it all together... my numbers are finally climbing with them. I’m sitting at 77°F and 78% humidity so far, which is almost perfect.

There’s still a little more work to do, but for now, I’m just going to enjoy seeing this little crabitat come together piece by piece. My little hermie is hidden right under the water pools, underneath the white egg crate. I know it's going to take a bit to get used to the new addition, plus going back out into the open after all the moving I had to do.

Next milestone will be acquiring more crabbies so my hermie has friends. But first I need to let my little sand goblin get settled and used to the tank...again.

Tiny crab. Tiny kingdom. Big progress.

Tank Question Back with more questions: can I stack tanks?

Hi, I had Hermits as a kid, they lived (more like survived) for 7 years in my care. I want to start again but properly (as an adult with adult money) and I want to build a grand enclosure with plenty of room and sensory for my future crabs.
I have a clean, like new 20 gallon solid glass tank- my question is, can I get one of those 20 gallon reptile terrariums (that front open) to stack on top to grant more space for climbing? If this is a viable option, the theory is to make a wood frame to prevent them from sliding apart.
Another question is if the water pools (salt & fresh) should be the same size?
Also, is quikrete play sand safe for hermit crabs? Google is NOT helpful.

Long to short:
I want to get hermit crabs, can I stack a 20 gallon aquarium onto the same size 20 gallon terrarium with front opening of if I re-enforce them together?
Water pools- same size or can they vary?
Is quikrete play sand safe??

Questions New hermit crabs obsessed with moss?

I got 3 hermit crabs and I have a giant moss orb and other things in the tank, for the past two days they’ve only been in the moss orb and eating moss and rarely coming out maybe a couple times for water. But that’s it.

Is this normal that they’re just staying in this moss ball. I left other foods , maybe they’re eating them too idk. The sand has a good damp texture I don’t see how it’s off putting.

Help! How do I move my hermit crabs without bringing roaches with them?

I live in Roanoke, VA, and we recently moved into an apartment that unfortunately has a roach problem. Now I’ve started finding roaches in my hermit crab tank. 😭 I found my crabs a new home and will be relocating them next week.

With that being said, how can I make sure I’m not accidentally bringing roaches or roach eggs with the crabs? I’m especially worried about roaches hiding inside their shells. I’d absolutely hate to pass this curse on to their new home or have my crabs continue dealing with roaches after they’re moved.

Has anyone dealt with this before? What did you do to make sure your crabs were completely roach free before moving them?

Also, if anyone in the Roanoke, VA area would be willing to take these crabs in if the people I currently have lined up end up canceling, please let me know! I really just want to make sure they go somewhere safe and roach free. ā¤ļø

Help! Hermit Question

Post image
7 Upvotes

This hermit is a surrender I got from a nice lady at PetSmart. He joined my colony and has been doing great, but recently I've been finding him just.. sitting out in the open? He reacts to hands and retracts into his shell normally , but he just sits here mostly and doesn't flap his antenna like he usually does. Tank is currently 75° and floating around 75-80% humidity. Any advice would be nice!

Questions Anything but getting in the water

Post image

My crab does this a lot, instead of getting in either of his water dishes he shimmies around the edge. I thought his bowl size was the issue so I got him a bigger bowl with more than enough space for him but he’s still doing this! What could be the reason?

Tank Question Climbing decorations that won't mold or rust?

Post image
4 Upvotes

Hi everyone! I just got a 40g topper that I'm excited to start decorating, and it will give me a ton of additional vertical space. I'm looking to buy some decor that my crab will be able to climb, but I know those woven nets mold and the bendable twigs rust. Any recommendations, or keywords to search on amazon other than hermit crab and reptile decor? I'm buying some acrylic floating shelves and I have plenty of extra boxwood panels.

Questions New crabs haven’t moved at all

Post image
12 Upvotes

Just got 2 hermit crabs about a week ago and they were active for about a day and then both climbed into the coconut and haven’t moved since. I’ve scattered food around and it’s clear nothing has been eaten or disturbed. Is this normal or should I be concerned?

This photo is a few days old so I’ve since replaced their food pellets with a balanced food mix from Etsy. I also have some additional tank decorating to do, like adding climbing walls, hanging the coconut, and adding a wheel to give them a more enriching habitat, but I’m worried any more changes will further stress them out. The tank temp and humidity seem good also.

If you have any tips or feedback please share! I am still learning how to care for them properly and want to make sure they have everything they need to thrive
