I was browsing through our day-trip plan from Milan to Lugano, Switzerland, and came across this small Italian town completely surrounded by Switzerland. Why did they choose not to become part of Switzerland?

Currently living in Western NC and really enjoy most of it. What are some of the similarities and differences? How was growing up there? Are there midgies?

I was really curious on how Montreal is since I was thinking of maybe moving there to get my post grad in architecture at McGill
I am 19 currently and Brazilian. By the time I move there I’ll be 21 years old. I currently live in the UK in Bristol but I’ve lived in Brazil, Venezuela, Panama, and the Dominican Republic in the past.
I wanted to know more about it like the cost of living, how open it is to foreigners, weather, stuff like that. I speak English, Portuguese, and Spanish fluently but I would try my hardest in my two years before my post grad to learn French.

First time visiting this part of the county. Beautiful scenery! How is the job market, lifestyle, and housing?

Does it feel Ukrainian there?

I was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and this shaped the cities that I choose to live. I was living in Marseille, France for the past 6 months and I really enjoyed the city, the beaches, the Calanques, the activities related to the sea (diving, paddle, kayak, etc) and enjoyed the Mediterranean vibe from the people, I felt they were more open to meet new people than the rest of France (note: I'm latino, so, for me this really plays a role for me).

Now, I've been accepted into a PhD program in Saint-Nazaire and I'm bit scared in how different can be the vibe of the city, in terms of people, in terms of activities (can I surf there? Can I practice sailing?) and in terms of nightlife. Can please, someone help me telling how is life in this part of the country?

I’m French, in my late twenties, and I’ve been applying to rural positions in the UK as part of a French international work program, one of them being Midsomer Norton.

I’ve always wanted to work in the UK, and I’m hoping to use the time there to explore the country by train.

If anyone here has worked in a rural UK town as a foreigner and young professional, I’d love to hear about your experience.

A few things I’m curious about:

Did you manage to meet people and build a social life? This isn’t a huge concern for me personally as I’m fairly introverted and enjoy my own company, but if I’m there for a year, it’d be nice to socialize now and then.

How easy is it to find a place to rent for a one-year lease in a small town like this? Any tips on where to look, or things to watch out for as a foreigner?

Is it manageable to rely on public transport, especially for weekend trips to bigger cities nearby (Bath, Bristol, London) or somewhere farther, like Edinburgh?

I'm curious to learn about life in Lamezia Terme, Old Nicastro and the Calabria region in general because my partner's grandparents are from Nicastro. My goal is to create a small book so that he can learn more about his ancestry and for personal reflection before he spends the winter in Calabria. I’m most interested in finding resources to learn about traditional Calabrian culture (especially anicent/pagan) around language/phrases/mottos/proverbs, folklore stories, songs/music, family traditions, medicinal/herbal remedies and old recipes (common and uncommon). I ’d also like to learn more about how the mafia (and mafia mindset) affects the region’s society and culture, past and present. My family is from Greece, which shares some cultural overlap and I have spent a significant amount of time in Milan and Rome, but not Southern Italy. If you have any knowledge around any of these topics or have any suggestions please let me know. I’m open to any resources you might be able to share or personal opinions/stories. Grazie!

Staying in the East Coast, I’d love to live in a walkable city with a sense of history, and Savannah is one of the primary choices that appeals to me.

The city has been posted here before and people like to mention the weather, but I’ve grown up in the Tampa Bay Area here in Florida so heat and humidity are not foreign concepts to me. If anything it’s probably more pleasant up north.

I’m curious about the minutiae of slow-city living and whether it’s worth building a future there: if I want to go shopping for weekly groceries, can I walk to the store or do I need my car? If I wanted to raise a family, are the schools (public and private) in the area decent enough, or would I be punishing my hypothetical kids’ futures? I’ve never lived in an area where crime is an issue, would I expect to experience some of the negatives living in the city? (that is, will I get robbed? Can I walk home in the evening safely? Do I have to worry about packages being stolen from my porch?) I know SCAD has a major presence there, is Savannah a “college town” or is it a “town with a college”?

I like Savannah because it feels dense but still quiet (not like Charleston!), but I’m sure my experience as a tourist reflects only a small portion of the city’s reality, so I’d like to know if this assumption is actually a valid one too.

The image I’ve attached has the area circled where the houses I’d like to live in intersect with the houses I can afford. It’s not exactly downtown, so I’m also concerned whether this is too far to enjoy the benefits of living in a city.

I realize these are a lot of questions, a bit more than usual for this sub, so I appreciate in advance in responses!
