Monthly Megathread Character Rant

Hey folks! So the survey made it pretty clear, we get a lot of “this character sucks” posts. Instead of everyone making new ones all the time, we’re gonna test out a monthly megathread where you can dump all your rants. We also rounded up a bunch of older hate threads, so you can scroll through them or drop your own comment if you feel like it.

Monthly Megathread Were they on a break?!!

It has been a question that has been asked so many times before. Because of the high demand - but similar posts that has been generated. We're opening the floor (this mega thread) for the debate!

The case for Ross: Rachel said, "Maybe we should just take a break," and then told Monica the next morning that they "broke up."

The case for Rachel: A "break" isn't a "breakup," and Mark showing up at the apartment didn't give Ross a "get out of jail free" card two hours later.

What are your thoughts on these cases?

---
All funsies aside, We do ask everyone to stay civil and kind to one another, everyone is allowed to have opinions and express those, but treat others like how you want to be treated as well. This thread will re-occur ever 14 days to keep the time line clean from any 'On a Break, break-up?' posts! (if you spot any feel free to report it to us by pressing the report button!)

Question I assume we all love the show - but what tiny detalis you didn’t like?

Post image

Ofc besides the „a product of it’s time” things.
For me it’s probably the common answers of;
- the lobotomization of Joey in the later seasons
- how Chandler’s use of pornography increased over time
- Mike being condescending to Phoebe every other sentence

I’m feeling a bit down lately and having Friends playing in the background keeps my mood up. What are your favourite episodes/lines/memes that just make you feel good? Or just make you laugh lots?

Question Which guy was closest to the girls?

I thought Ross would be the obvious answer but I think he really wasn’t connected with any character deeply other than Rachel. Joey has got that super strong bond with Phoebe, and the other girls feel equally close with him and Chandler. So idk

Discussion What's your favorite blooper in the show, including those left in?

One I only recently noticed was when Monica banged Ben's head and Ross is asking her about the alphabet and the letters falling out of his head. Jen laughs and David hugs her to hide it.

Tried linking to the AV Club story but the auto-mod removed it, so hopefully this will work. This comes from Mary Robertson, the director of Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV.

Discussion Which was the better trio?

I feel like outside of the girls versus the boys, these were the two main trios. Like Monica, Chandler, and their honorary son. Versus. Ross, Rachel and their eccentric witch ambassador.

Discussion TOW Joey never gets to do phase 2 with Chandler again

Post image
40 Upvotes

It hit me a few reruns ago. In the episode after Chandler breaks up with Kathy and goes to the stripclub with the girls instead of with Joey. At the end of the episode Joey is sad having missed this, and Chandler says he’ll have many chances to do it again since “there are thousands of women waiting to screw him over”. However, that is not true and there will be no other time, as his next relationship is with Monica. And I just love it.

Discussion The later seasons made me forget how whimsical and sweet-souled Season 1 Phoebe was🥹

I was rewatching season 1 and it made me forget how lovely, slightly airhead but very charming Season 1 Phoebe was☹️

Like ofc considering everything she went through..the traumas and all she had every right to be bitter or even a lil evil and I completely understand that perspective but she was still such a warm soul despite all of it.
And then you get to the later seasons and she was SO mean 😭 Especially with the constant jabs at Chandler. I hated it🥀 like

️Season 1 Phoebe could never‼️

Question Does anyone ever get frustrated at Ross after he screw over with Emily’s Wedding?

Like everytime i Watch the Season 4 finale and 5‘S premiere i just feel so bad for Emily. Like i get they want to have him pair up with Rachel but damn, Ross really screwed his marriage with Emily by doing this And the next few episode are really emotionally painful to watch, especially if you watch from Emily’s POV. Ross really screwed up with her.

Discussion Birthday Inconsistency between S1 and S9

So I'm rewatching and at the very fourth episode in S1 Joey and Chandler walk in and go "Happy Birthday Man, we got you a ticket to the rangers game!!!" And Ross is like my birthday was 7 months ago!

And looks at the tickets and immediately goes on my god is today October 20th?

And later, when Ross injured his hand trying to punch Joey in S9, and Joey has to fill up the forms at the Emergency room, he says his birthday is on October 18th.

So there you go!

Discussion Playing dirty! What jokes did you not get till you rewatched when you were older!

Post image
2.1k Upvotes

What’s one joke you didn’t understand until you were older?

For me - it was Rachel’s “it doesn’t happen to every guy and it IS A BIG DEAL”

I actually originally heard it as one word “it doesn’t have an emmeryguy” and I just thought it was an American word / gag I didn’t understand

(I was 10 when that series aired)

Discussion Am I the only one who only now realized the irony in this? Season 3, episode 25

Post image

I'm rewatching right now and when Chandler said this all I could think about was the fact he and Monica actually couldn't have children of their on in the late seasons. People must have talked about this a lot already, but honestly that's the first time I've actually paid attention to what he said.

Discussion Turning 30

Just noticed something. Was watching the episode where they turn 30 and when they are at Monica's surprise party, Chandler is the only one with a regular tie. All the other men have bow ties. Thought that was funny since he was telling Joey to put his back on-even though it was bothering his 'Joey's apple'. Lol

Discussion seriously asking/ not critising

I was rewatching Friends from S1 because it’s a perfect binge-watch show and I realised Rachel befriended the group too quickly. Considering they’ve been friends for a long time, they didn’t have any conversations that she didn’t understand. By 2-3 episodes, she started calling Phoebe Pheebs. I get her bond with Monica and Ross because they grew up on the same street.

P.S. I noticed another error long ago but didn’t feel it warranted a separate post. I think most people would remember Ross saying when the puck hit him (the one where he missed Carol because it was their first time together) that his birthday was on October 20, which was seven months ago, roughly around March. In the episode where Joey takes him to the hospital, he says his birthday is October 18, and when Gunther asked Rachel her birthday, Ross said May 5.

I might be wrong about the episode timeline, but I definitely remember the dates.

Question Identifying a vague scene

Hey all - help!

I've watched through this series multiple times in my lifetime, and I'm not sure if this is a mandala effect or my mind has jumbled a few scenes together.

I have a vague recollection of a scene where some of the characters are in front of the inside of Monica's door lined up and Joey barges chandler out of the way (he's sent flying).

I'm rewatching through now up to S4 and I've not come across it

Some of those details might be incorrect but I'm sure it was Joey and chandler
