How do you justify the financial risk of building a high-power/hyper-bike? I love the engineering but fear seizure.

Upvotes

I am absolutely in love with the idea of building a high-powered, clean build (looking at 3kW–5kW rear hub setups). The performance and DIY aspect look incredible. However, living in the UK, I am completely torn. On one hand, I want that level of power, but on the other hand, I am terrified of investing £1,500+ into a custom build just to watch the police seize and crush it with zero way to get it back. For those who have built high-powered kits, why did you decide to take the leap? How do you manage that anxiety, and what precautions do you take to protect your investment?

Hi so this is my e-bike and I’m new to them so I’m trying to learn how to work on them and upgrade it. Does anyone know if there’s a 60 volt battery and controller that will plug and play cause I don’t know how to soder and my controller just went bad a couple of days ago and I figured it was a good time to go ahead and upgrade it sense I need a new controller anyways and information helps like I said I’m new to electric stuff I was raised on gas powered stuff so electric stuff is new territory for me

So what are we calling these pedal e-motos now?

Serious question because I can’t keep the categories straight anymore.

I was looking at this Hikeep MA-S. Pedals, dirt-bike-ish frame, supposedly around 40 mph. Calling it a bicycle feels silly, but it’s obviously not the same thing as a plated electric motorcycle either.

Is ‘hyper e-bike’ basically the accepted name for this stuff now?

Bought one for my kiddo (but technically, it's for me😁). Since I tore down my mini sumo, I decided to use all the parts off/for it on this bike.

Dnm Hornet M200-S fork, DNM Hornet MTG-RC shock, YCF triple clamp, I think a 220MM front brake rotor, and a handlebar I got from cycle gear. It's gonna get my supermoto wheels also. Just waiting on new tires.

Just picked up this mini E bike for 100$ (Monster Moto E250) its made for kids but is the same size as a 50cc pocket bike! It comes with a 24v battery and a 250 watt DC motor stock. The frame is solid it also comes with disc brakes. However it is very slow about 15km top speed with me on it (185lbs 6ft tall) and runs for about 20 minutes until the battery is fully dead.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a faster motor, bigger battery and better controller. My budget is around 400$-500$ max! Id like to hopefully double maybe even triple the speed of what it is currently!

If anyone has any ideas or has done something similar and could offer advice it would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

How can you guys build/buy one?

I’d love to have one stealth bomber, but honestly the prices are insane. Even used ones barely show up, and when they do, sellers still want almost full retail price for something with hundreds of miles on it. I looked into importing one too, thinking it might work out cheaper, but by the time you add shipping, customs, and taxes, it ends up costing even more than buying locally (if you can even find one locally to begin with).

At this point I’m starting to think the only realistic way to get one is either building it myself from parts over time or idk, getting lucky somehow. If anyone here has extra parts lying around, knows of a pretty good deal, or is looking to offload a build, I’m all ears 👀

Sorry if this comes across like I’m just asking for a handout, that’s not really my intent. I’m from Portugal, and realistically it would take me over a year of saving just to afford something like a Stealth Bomber, especially with EU prices/shipping/customs on top. I’ve seen those 3000W kits people use to convert regular bikes too, but I’m not even sure something like that would count as a real hyperbike compared to a proper build. This would be for me and my brother, so any advice (or spare parts 👀) would honestly mean a lot.

Surprised I don’t see these mentioned anywhere here. I’m thinking about picking one of these up this week. At about $1200 it seems like a fun little bike and a good bang for your buck. Anyone have one of these?

It took a lot of waiting and if you saw my previous post last few months you'd kind of get a little idea of. I've been going through on it but the build is finally working and not blowing up and I'm very happy today.

Quick spec rundown

battery: 108v 108ah 1800amp peak discharge

Controllers: dual 1082600 EVsurin fardrivers

Motor: qs268 25kw

Slowly turning up the pressure right now. Running at about 140 KW, being very careful because I don't want the controllers to explode again. Some kind of feeling your doubt monitoring them and just taking my time. Next up is just basically just putting the body panels back on and you know a little bit of clean up. Maybe wrap it and that's it

Extra stock battery and charger for a brute/javelin.

Hello everyone.

I just upgraded my battery on my brute and I have an extra battery pack that just sits and collects dust at the moment. I don't have any plans to anything with this battery, it has only been used for 6 months, with around 120 cycles. The battery still hits around 83 volts when fully charged, and I have a battery charger that can go with it because the upgraded battery does not have a compatible charger cable insert for the old battery.

The last 4 digits of the serial number on the battery: y-588

Some numbers for the serial number rubbed off at the beginning due to the seat rubber stops to keep the battery secure. Comes with both keys to lock the battery.

This is a stock 20 amp hour battery.

I'm located in one of the four corner states.

Let me know if you are interested in picking up this battery for your brute or javelin.

Looking for a twist throttle for a TST R002.
I got one with the 2 pins but noticed it has yellow connection while the TST has orange for the throttle, and the twist doesn’t work unfortunately though it’s 2 pin.

Anyone know an/the exact model(s) that work with the TST R002?

Thanks

Some useful e-bike battery charging advice I found

I kept seeing conflicting battery advice: always charge to 100%, never go above 80%, balance every month, leave it plugged in overnight, and so on. I looked through battery-aging research and guidance from major manufacturers to separate the useful advice from the oversimplified rules.

The main takeaway is that there isn’t one perfect charging percentage for every rider. Around 80% can be a sensible everyday target, but charging to 100% when you need the range is normal. Temperature, how long the battery remains full, storage habits, and cell balancing can matter just as much as the number you stop at.

I put together a practical guide explaining what charge target may fit your riding, when a battery should be balanced, which temperatures to avoid, and how to store it properly:

Switched the front sprocket from a 14 tooth to a 13 tooth for more torque and acceleration. Top speed went down to 43 as a result which doesn't bother me since this thing scares me at top speed anyway. It now tries to pick the front end up pretty regularly if I'm not careful, but the power is much more usable in the woods now which I'm loving.

Also swapped out the stock front plastics for a dirtbike headlight I modified to fit the original headlight. Lastly I added a universal front fender, which this bike has the proper mounting points for which is a huge plus! The results are pretty stellar in my opinion.

I'm a single Dad & during any down time I have I usually look to go riding my e-Bikes, usually with no destination in mind, just go out & start riding, so 2 weeks ago I decided to sign up for Door Dash & Uber Eats to see what it's about & I'm actually surprised at what easy money it is, & I've been averaging $25+ an hour for something I used to do FOR FREE!

it's really a good way to make these e-Bikes pay for themselves, & in only a few months & all the mileage, maintenance, repair & necessary upgrades are a tax write off at the end of the year, it's a win-win! 💯

My stealth bomber won’t turn on

I crashed a couple weeks ago and it messed up my bike a bit, one of the orange wires for my key ignition snapped and a leg came off, but apart from that the bike has been working fine until now. on the way home the bike randomly shut off and has not turned on since. i tried charging the battery until the light on the charger went green, still no go. i checked to make sure all the wires are connected which they are, except for one orange and red wire which was just snapped off for some reason. it's a 8kw motor, ukc1 screen, 74v 45ah battery, with a 72v 200a controller. does anyone know why my bikes done this and how to fix it? i feel like i might need a new key ignition which ive already ordered, it has 2 red and 2 orange cables if that helps. when i would put the key ignition in and turn it to “on” the horn and tail lights would work without turning the whole bike on, but now it just doesn’t work at all. if anyone could help that would be great

I built a free eBike comparison & real-world range calculator tool – looking for your feedback!

Hey everyone!

As an eBike rider, one of my biggest frustrations when researching bikes was dealing with exaggerated manufacturer range claims and messy spec sheets spread across dozens of retail pages.

To help with this, I’ve been building Ebike Overlands — a free platform designed to simplify eBike research and specs comparison:

What’s currently built: - Real-World Range Calculator: Estimates actual mileage factoring in rider weight, battery capacity (Wh), motor power, assist level, and terrain: https://ebikeoverlands.com/tools/range-calculator - Side-by-Side Comparator: Compare technical specs, motor torque, payload, and geometry across top brands (Rad Power, Aventon, Lectric, Himiway, Specialized, etc.): https://ebikeoverlands.com/compare - AI Bike Advisor: An interactive assistant to help filter options based on budget and riding style.

The goal is to keep it clean, fast, and 100% focused on technical data.

I’d love to get feedback from the community: 1. What specific specs or filters would you like to see added to the comparison tool? 2. Are there any niche/custom eBike brands you think must be in the database?

Thanks for checking it out!
