You’re wrong about loading states
i.imgur.comWe interact with loading states many times a day and they seem like inconveniences that we have to get past to see our content. A spinner on a buffering YouTube video, a progress bar while a game downloads, or a tip about a video game while the next area loads. But in reality they serve to help distract us to make the wait feel less painful (along with just telling us that some work is being done).
But some loading animations must be better than others at shortening our perception of time. I created an experiment to test this and find out what loading state animation (or none at all) is actually best at making waiting feel faster than it actually is.
The experiment matchups up two random loading states at a time, asks you which felt faster, and then adjusts a global elo score for those animations. You even get a perception score at the end to see how well you were able to perceive actual durations.
I am aware that the setup of this test introduces a ton of little biases but I’m still hoping that with enough participants we can still get some interesting findings out of it. So please give it a try and let me know your feedback!
