F*ck you, Thomas Chappel!

A subreddit dedicated to the man who somehow managed to survive both a giant sperm whale and the consequences of his own stupidity.

For those unfamiliar with Mr. Chappel’s achievements:
• Crewman aboard the whaleship Essex, the real-life disaster that inspired Moby-Dick.
• Landed on Charles Island (now Floreana) in the Galápagos.
• Started a fire as a prank.
• Accidentally turned the entire island into an ecological catastrophe.
• Contributed to the extinction of the Floreana Giant Tortoise.
• Contributed to the extinction of the Floreana Mockingbird.
• Survived when a sperm whale sank the Essex.
• Survived months adrift in the Pacific.
• Somehow escaped becoming lunch.
• Somehow escaped justice.
• Somehow lived to old age.

And before anyone says:
“But the extinctions helped Darwin!”
No.
We appreciate Darwin.
We do not believe that setting a unique island ecosystem on fire is an acceptable contribution to science.

This subreddit stands with the whales, the tortoises, the mockingbirds, and common sense.
Thomas Chappel had none of those.
