Help Endnote issue: content Moves

I've run into this before. Doing a book with chapter endnotes, so working within an .indb. That's fine.

I have to go in and place the endnotes myself. (Don't ask – the MS is a mess.)

This is what happens. Supposing I've created endnote 1. I place the number for endnote 2, but returning to the endnote location, it has placed a 2 but moved the content of endnote 1 to 2.

Every time.

What am I doing wrong?

Someone reported this before.

If I remember correctly - you've messed up structure.

Either post some screenshots of the place in the Endnotes - with Hidden Characters VISIBLE - or share your file with me privately - upload just INDD file somewhere - ZIP/RAR it first - then DM me link.

Thanks for offering to help. I don't think I can send out parts of this particular book.

What I can't figure out is where I made any kind of misstep.

Green - correctly located opening & closing Endnote brackets.

Red - there is only the Endnote reference number "enveloped" with the brackets - text contents is outside.
