map feedback

Post image

Hello everyone!

So i'm on track to DM my 2nd ever campaign and i've been trying my best to make a somewhat geographically realistic dnd map in a parchment style. when compared to how i made maps before i think it is night and day. but i was just hoping to get some opinions here before i bring it to the table for the 1st time.

So i'd love to know what you all think! feel free to be as honest as can be and if there are any things i correct that are mayorly incorrect i'd love to change it while i can!

Thanks alot in advance!

I cannot tell you what is or isn't realistic, but I find it visually pleasing. The roads look nicely placed and there is a way that this map can flow from place to place with a party underway.

If I had to mention anything, it would be that you seem to favour placing trees along the coast. That isn't a mistake in any way or form, but it was the only thing that I found odd. That may just be a matter of taste though. This map will propably enhance your campaign quite well, if you use it right.

I think i just got lost in my excitement of being close to done and just went ham lol, i'll give it a touch up! one of my players is massive into maps and geography so hence i wanna try to make it pretty good!

Thanks for the kind words too!

You may want to have a look at those triple outlines at the coast. In rivers and seas they tend to look a bit weird. Turning them on/off is possible on the right were the layers are situated. Land mask -> settings -> outlines.

Have a look at variations with it on/off or with bigger gaps/fewer lines.

Maybe some text North, West, etc. for the windrose.

the edges of the island look too rectangular as if it were a vaguely retouched line.

How would you reckon i fix it? or do you have advice rather

something i often do is take a slightly smaller land edge tool than what i initially used and drag it precisely along my current shoreline. it'll lead to things being a bit more jagged, and don't feel afraid to make a bold line that cuts through something that looks too regular.

it's actually quite simple you just have to jag a little

In terms of realism, it's pretty good and the aesthetics of it are quite nice as well - the only thing I would change is how straight and smooth the coastlines are. I'd go over them again with a higher roughness brush and add a few more inlets or promontories around the place, just to make them look less smooth.

I know you're looking for map feedback but I gotta ask... What's the lore on Craugh?

cool that you ask! so Craugh is loosely inspired by Rahdan from Elden Ring. Craugh used to be home to like goblins, ogres, hobgoblins and the likes. The Elenian Empire had had enough of the constant raids and murdering sop they sent soldier to fight it out. led by their most powerful general, the battle for Craugh lasted a long time and an unknown amount of people ended up being killed here but it's guessed to be around 1-2 million deaths happend. the ground on the battlefield of craugh is so deeply tainted with the blood of these people that is has totally corrupted the natural order of life. nothing grows here and it's said to be cursed to this day.

If the party chooses to travel here whether through a quest or other means they will be met with the undead general, who has said to be a myth or a legend at this point.

Info on craugh isn't like fully complete so i'll write more history and so about it soon but that's the rough idea :)

That's awesome, love a blood soaked battlefield. Perhaps not only the general is cursed, but these warring factions are locked in an almost undead stalemate, cursed to relive the conflict again and again 👀

I like it, however imo the lower eastern coastline looks a bit lackluster in its overall straight shape

you reckon just jag the edges up a bit?

Yes, maybe make the bays a bit more pronounced or add a small peninsula or something

gotcha, ill revisit it and take it into consideration. thanks for the feedback!

Love the color palette and the over all shape is really nice but I feel something is a Lil off on the Easter coastline... Also out of curiosity how big is this island?

The island itself is quite big as far as specific meassurements go i haven't really thought about it.

I really like this map. It reminds me of Vvardenfell Morrowind. The natural barriers that divide regions. You have to go around stuff to get to places. Distinct regions. I like it. Good job.
