Like, as a note. Its clear the Tiger is cool with the Lion and is in fact not upset. They would have no problem telling the other when they've had enough.

Male tigers and lions can get along if they were raised together and introduced to each other as cubs. Conflicts could still arise but those are reduced if the proper steps are taken like not introducing females which could potentially cause conflict between the males for mating rights.

There was even a case where a male lion, tiger, and bear were very bonded to each other. They were in a horrible and extremely abusive situation involving being locked away in cages too small for them but they were rescued and found to be too bonded to separated and so lived in their sanctuary enclosure together until members of the trio started to pass away.

Saw an enclosure with a tiger and a huge wolf in the same space- they were a bonded pair, rescued together and stayed together. They were really cute (altho I don’t think that “sanctuary” was very ethical)

Yeah some sanctuaries aren’t really sanctuaries. It’s always interesting to see how animals of completely different species can bond together. I’ve seen a video of a rhino and hippo bond and all sorts of other interesting combinations.

Patterns exist in different languages. Sometimes, ESL speakers conflate the patterns across languages they speak.

I'm speaking from personal experience from my most recent workplace, where I worked with many ESL colleagues, most of whom held advanced degrees.

As someone who works with ESL, most of the time, people learn words without a care for the origin of the word - especially since things are often learned in categories, and especially with English since it is really not internally coherent.

If someone just found out about hybrids, and they stumble into an article that says something like, "A hybrid between a horse and a donkey is a mule. A hybrid between a bull and a bison is a beefalo. A hybrid between a tiger and a lion is a ligar.", they might not make the connection that the third is a portmanteau, since the first one isn't, and the second one is a partial one between two words that weren't mentioned. As such, they won't even think of looking for a typo.

Lastly, on a tangential note, you are coming across as a pedant and a complete asshole about this.

You cannot be serious, I refuse to believe it, it's not physically possible to be this removed from reality.

No one in the history of mankind has learned about what Ligers are without learning how the word is constructed. Stop. Just stop.

That's the whole reason to bother to remember the word. Otherwise you would just remember the factoid "tigers and lions can be bred together" without remembering the term, and look up the word when it comes up - in which case, again, you would not misspell it.

And also: In the complete off circumstance that it would have happened: Well great, now my comment still applies: I am befuddled at how that would ever happen, and asking the commenter to explain what's happening in their brain. (And if they then don't want to reply because they find my confrontatoin too rude: That's fine, the joke still stands. You understand that I don't *actually* care about the explanation, right? It does not surprise me that you "refuse to believe" someone learned something in a way that is alien to you. You seem to not have a mental model of how other people learn things differently.

When learning a new language, people still think in their mother tongue. If the language structure of their mother tongue is different enough, it might not even register that the words are related. Some languages don't have portmanteaus at all. Some languages have alternate spellings for the same word. Some languages have similar words with similar roots, but different spellings.

You also seem to be an even bigger asshole than I thought.

I did, and animals that grow up together and or comfortable with each other communicate nonviolent. Meaning, that tiger does not give a shit. It may be annoyed. But that tiger doesnt REALLY give a shit. Again. The problem is people adding human emotion into this. If that tiger didn't want that lion near it, its wouldn't let it. Its only annoyed at HOW close it got. NOT that it got close. The only things that have trouble setting boundaries are humans. Other animals seem to not have that issue.

Lions and tigers in captivity almost always don't get along and are usually put together due to unlicensed enclosures looking to create Ligers (or tigons) rather than rescue and conversation effort

In this video the tiger doesn't seem receptive. No sniffing, no chuffing, no bobbing. Imagine if someone hits another person unless they gave them what they want. And then recorded a video of them doing what they want and said look, they're not fighting back, they don't mind it.
