Tbf to the falcon, they hunt by dive-bombing their prey and knocking it out or outright killing it through pure kinetic energy. they don't really know how to deal with a perfectly healthy pigeon that is actively trying to escape.

I'd be surprised if the pigeon lived, despite flying away. If anything other than feathers was on the receiving end of that beak and those talons, pigeon is toast.

Pigeons are surprisingly resilient. The amount of pigeons I see in NYC hobbling around on one foot or missing other body parts is fairly high.

Seriously. I was at Fanueil Hall in Boston last October and there was a pigeon with one leg just gnawing on an Italian sausage it stole from someone sitting near me. I respect the hell out of that.

lots of other people are saying that falcons usually disable their prey by ramming them in mid-flight, whereupon it becomes much easier to defeather it and then consume it. this falcon obviously didn't have the momentum of already being in flight, so instead it had to go straight to defeathering and hope for the best. it's probably why the pigeon still had enough strength to get away

i wondered if it was just plucking feathers and then going to drop it to see if it fell to the ground or not. don't fuck around with falcons i guess.

I remember seeing this a while ago and the poster said this particular pigeon had already tried this and this was apparently him/her coming back for more I suppose. Survival of the fittest?
