That couple on the left are standing right next to a table. Here in Japan, even children are taught from a young age to quickly get under a table to help protect themselves from falling debris during an earthquake.

They might not be from the area. If you didnt grow up in an earthquake prone area you probably weren't taught what to do.

I've known this since I was a child, and am not from an earthquake prone area. I thought this was common knowledge

I'm not from an earthquake prone area, and I know this, but it's only because I read it in one of those Eyewitness books I borrowed from the school library for no real reason lol... We never learnt it at school or anything like that though, I can totally understand people not knowing
