Least Vietnamese looking Vietnamese

Biracial, perhaps? Alternate mugshot, and the docket lists him as Vietnamese.

He looks even less Vietnamese in that pic lol

as a Vietnamese I can spot the Vietnamese features but if you dont tell me his name I wouldn't be able to tell, its a strangely subtle subconscious thing but it gets drown out by the white features

u/goodolewhasisname 18h ago
Last American soldiers left Vietnam in 1973, according to his birthday on alternate mugshot he was probably conceived in 1973. Probably not a coincidence.

The docket lists "vietnamese" as his "race". That's some very ignorant BS I unfortunately see too common in US, regarding the definition of words like race, ethnicity, and nationality.
Vietnamese is his nationality, it's not a race.
I used to handle application forms from US college students. The wild range of things they'd fill in under "nationality" were astonishing, ranged from white to Male to Texas to Los Angeles.
And don't get me started on the "race" selection in most US government forms. "Asian and Pacific Islander" does not compute for me as an East Asian person, because I look nothing like Dwayne Johnson.

I agree with you. I didn't know he was half Vietnamese.
I went to high school with a guy who doesn't look half Vietnamese at all. He could pass for a white dude. Once he spoke Vietnamese, I was shocked.

Mixed race, especially if they were born during/just after the Vietnam war.

My half Asian son doesn't look Asian at all. My half black nephew doesn't look white at all. My half Asian daughter looks pretty Asian. Genetics hey. Takes you on a wild ride.

there are americans/europeans with asian features, didn't it occur to you there could be vietnamese with european features?
why do you people think everyone in "foreign" countries looks the same?
2
u/DopesickJesus 12h ago
“American” isn’t a good descriptor if you’re not talking about culture or natives, not the best comparison.
Usually, when people call someone “Asian” it’s typically East or Southeast Asian. East Asians, and SE Asians that are part of the Sinosphere, have very distinct features that the majority fall into some range of having. Their very homogenous cultures and populations kind of help ensure that. The fact that we all understand what a speaker says when they say “looks Asian” just further proves that point. 🤷🏻♂️But yeah. There are Asian people who don’t look as Asian as the rest. Even before major migration paths opened to these communities, and although exceptionally rare in comparison to the majority, there are Asian people who don’t “look Asian.” This of course is a tiny minority, and why they could comment that with their chest out.

u/lyricalities 16h ago
he has wide zygos and an asian head shape, flatter midface pretty sure, though hart to see from front, he actually does have a more vietnamese facial hair pattern. Part of what makes it look so uncanny is he had so much hair loss and he's holding his eyes wide open

His father was the inventor of dipping in south east asia, like many westerners do now but don't know who invented it first.
1
u/sanriodialtone 12h ago
I’m unsure as to why, but I thought he was Irish. His head shape is reminiscent of my viet colleagues I will say so I totally see it. Usually those viet/East Asian genes are strong.

In 2018, police in Lancaster, Pennsylvania released this hand-drawn sketch after a man allegedly stole cash from a stand at Central Market. Despite police themselves describing the sketch as “amateurish and cartoonish,” it along with the witness’s description helped jog an investigator’s memory. Police identified 44 year old Hung Phuoc Nguyen as a potential suspect, and the witness later picked him out of a photo lineup. He was arrested days later and charged with two counts of theft.

I mean it surprisingly is close enough
From the drawing I'd know to look for
1: someone with eyes close together
2: thin lips
3: short hair
4: middle aged
5: low ears
Really only the face shape in the drawing thats off by much

u/Affectionate-Wave586 18h ago
The problem is that the sketch appears to have been done with little technical proficiency, so it's hard to say which of the features being depicted are actually reliable, and which just look the way they do due to the roughness of the sketch.
4
u/SkinnyStav 10h ago
Tbf if the witness only remembered a few details of the suspects face, a more lifelike portrait would entail adding random details.

u/Ok-Nail5186 17h ago

How does this guy has a Vietnamese name? That's the actual oddity about this. He looks nothing like Vietnamese. lol.

Born in Vietnam towards the end of the war. Likely at least half if not 3/4 white.

He doesn't look half Vietnamese at all. He could literally passed for a white dude. Now, we know he's half Vietnamese because of his name.

Yes I
I was going to guess that exact name
Based on either picture shown

I remember when the bolo was published on the news. And ridiculed by the broadcasters. It seems like the following day the guy was caught and the broadcasters were gracefully humble. They showed the artist’s sketch next to the mug shot. Pure comedy.

u/Detrimental_Figment 16h ago
The chin shape is completely wrong. The drawing has a super sharp chin and the actual man almost doesn’t have a chin.

Wasn't this the guy where the news anchor was trying not to laugh about the sketch on air and then they said they found him and put the picture side by side and the anchor stopped laughing and was like "that's accurate"
could be remembering the details wrong though.

Ive seen this photo so much and I'm just now finding out that's his name and he's literally listed as Vietnamese. That just makes this scenario much funnier and odd, considering he's the most white looking American dude I've ever seen lol

Politce sketches iirc emphasise unique features of a suspect or a John/Jane DOE so you get weird sketches a lot of times, but this one is borderline funny.
