Unrelated, 2025 Everest mortality rate was 1.1%. so all those flashlights/lanterns must have made it home 🥲

Actually 1.1% did not.

Oh was thinking like, it looks like 50 people tops so chances are the 1% was not among them.

This is amazing but is Mt Everest always crowded now? It seems any time I see a current video on Everest there's literally a line to view the summit. Which is crazy because isn't time ticking when you're up that high?

The weather window for a summit attempt is very short - 1-2 weeks mid to late march. Hence the line.
The rest of the year is largely not viable, a winter ascent in December-January is for the top 1% of the top 1% climbers of alpine climbers which might attempt to catch a brief relenting of the Jetstream and then do a max effort and speed summit attempt.
Around 12,000 people have sumitted Everest in the summer, that 1-2 week window in May.
15 people in winter.

I couldn't even begin to imagine some of the weather you'd encounter in the winter months that high up on a mountain side with no cover from the winds and weather. Especially since I can't imagine predicting weather up there is 100% concrete.
Thanks for the reply, it makes perfect sense why there's so many people is such a small window exists.

Some rescue organisation mentions -40°C temperature at the peak (before windchill) and up to 160kph winds, that is when you are in the "bad" winter weather and not in one of those short hours weather gaps.

It’s interesting for sure. But that line of rich “mountaineers” waiting their turn to summit is just depressing.

People work and spend money on their hobbies, what do you find wrong with that?
