The implosion of the Titan submarine (OceanGate) was so rapid that the pain wasn't even registered by the brain. They didn't feel anything at all. Utterly instantaneous.

Thank god the kid didn’t feel it. I feel no sympathy for the adults, but he just wanted to spend time with his dad and he didn’t even want to be on the sub.

I feel the need to dispel this myth whenever I read it.

He absolutely wanted to be there, took his mom's place onboard and brought a Rubik's Cube to get a world record for being rich enough to solve it really deep underwater.

The claim that he didn't want to go comes from an estranged family member who didn't even know he was aboard until after the implosion and made up multiple contradictory stories for anyone that would pay for an interview.

I knew the first two parts, and have corrected the narrative as you have, but the last paragraph - could you provide sources? I do kind of suspect it's the case, and she was being an opportunist, but I hate to repeat that without confirming it myself.

She speculated here that they were enjoying the trip:

'They were still just enjoying it. That is the best for them,' she told the Daily Mail while holding back tears at her home in Amsterdam today. 'If you are a parent and you think for Father's day, for something nice, I've brought my son here…. At least he didn't have to suffer from the guilt.'

Numerous sources say she was estranged from the family and her family was even kicked out of the funeral.

She talked to pretty much every tabloid in both the US and UK, then wrote a book about it.

Their relationship was mostly occasional texting.

Close family friends and the mother contradict her claims.

Based on the links below, she seems like an opportunistic attention seeker with an ax to grind against the family.

Thank you, I appreciate that. I'll add that to my own corrections in the future when people bring this topic up. I thought I vaguely remembered reading about this back then but my Googling failed to bring anything up but the initial statements, so I didn't want to falsely report based on a weak memory.

Honestly, the link you shared has her reporting in her own words that the family had a rocky relationship, which is more than enough proof.

I feel less sympathy for him than I do anyone but Stockton himself.

Mr. Titanic DID know the sub wasn't safe, others in the field had warned him! He said he didn't care, he could die, he was content to see Titanic. James Cameron said he had warned him that his presence was adding an air of legitimacy to the whole dangerous venture ("Well, if this world-class expert in Titanic is on board and has done these dives, surely it can't be dangerous?").

They could have spent it on a less dangerous form of pleasure like hunting game animals or mega yachts. Instead they chose to trust in shitty half-price engineering. Stupidity wins Darwin awards, not my sympathy.
