The implosion of the Titan submarine (OceanGate) was so rapid that the pain wasn't even registered by the brain. They didn't feel anything at all. Utterly instantaneous.

Served on a submarine. The access hatches had an upper and lower watertight hatch, and the space between was designed to be free flooded for us to use submarine escape suits in. One of the tests we did was opening the upper hatch and flooding it at depth, leaving only the lower hatch to stop the sea pressure from getting inside. Even at wayyyy shallower depths than the titan, the A gang chief told me that if that hatch fails we’d be all dead within a second.

Man why doesn’t anyone want to reenlist for another tour on the recirculated underwater fart and instant death tube?”

Honestly all thoughts of re enlisting went out the window when the standard was getting extended for an extra patrol when you re enlist

When I was a teenager I thought I wanted a career as a submariner…instant death is one thing but realizing the size of those those coffins/bunks and dudes wackin’ it around me was a a big ol “maybe I’ll do finance instead”.

u/Fulcrum58 23h ago

To be fair my bunk mates kept it pretty quiet while stroking

u/rctmanh 14h ago

Yea we don’t want to be rude! Gotta fap nice and quietly, maybe just a whisper of a whimper when peaking

The important thing is that everyone else knows the rules. Shut the fuck up while I’m doing it or it’s gonna take longer.

u/BlainethePayne 7h ago

Mmmm, it's the opposite for me

u/BigXthaPugg 2h ago

Whenever I see rack curtains rocking I always reach in to see if a shipmate needs a hand 😎

u/HoboKillah 11h ago

real gentlemen.

u/TheLastPrinceOfJurai 10h ago

Silent but sexy?

u/serabine 16h ago

Look up "hot racking" or "hot bunking". You might have gotten to lie where your crewmate walked it.

The fact that you gave yourself two choices: submariner or finance bro is hilarious

u/Wolff_Hound 10h ago

You can navigate a lawless, hostile waters full of ruthless sharks and foreign enemies... or you can serve in the Navy.

Do you like films about gladiators?

u/JonathanRL 11h ago

There was an guy on social media who made content about life on a deterrence patrol submarine. I think what bothered me the most was how there was absolutely no way out of it. Once the patrol starts, that is where you will be for the next few months.

As a tall man when the recruiters told me I could be a nuke on a sub is about when I lost interest in that vocation.

u/BlueEyedSoul2 9h ago

Same thing. I wanted to do meteorology. They could have used me, but they said I would be sent to nuke given my background (AP math and science).

u/Doorframepain 9h ago

Yeah same and had top ASVAB scores

Do you have submarine dreams? Or do you have any after effects of serving? Being on a submarine is such an extreme difference between everyday life I'm curious how your post-brain processes it, it at all.

Yeah occasionally I’ll dream that I’m underway again and have 2 months to go. I used to dream about waking up underway, standing watch for 8 hrs and then working, just to actually wake up and do that whole routine. That was the worst lol

I was told by someone that when submariners come off a long tour they are short-sighted for a while. Is that true?

u/Fulcrum58 9h ago

People do say this but I’ve never noticed any dip in distance vision, everything is just super bright outside for a while

u/Roxysteve 8h ago

Darn those leg-pulling submariners!

😄

u/Pazzeh 4h ago

No

8

u/Chrysocyon 16h ago

Damn that sucks. Even your dreams were stuck on the boat. Hope youre enjoying life on the surface now

8

u/Detaineepyramid 13h ago

I had dreams I’d completed my deployment while deployed and still randomly dream I’m back on deployment 20 years later…

u/FashionPolicia 11h ago

i used to have similar dreams in elementary, waking up after dreaming the teacher chewed you out for not doing your homework the day before, only to realize you have to go to school and get chewed out for not doing your homework the day before xd

How much did you get paid as a Submariner?

Did you end up with a big amount of money after being on patrol for months at a time. With extra pay and you can’t spend it while you’re down there.

u/Fulcrum58 9h ago

Maybe 3-400 dollars more than any other sailor by year 5 ish. It goes up the longer you stay in

u/Sponjah 9h ago

Sub pay actually starts to get pretty decent the longer you serve. Combined with sea pay and it’s very nice but that’s not specific to submarines.

u/bliveone 17h ago

Every. Damn. Week... and I've been out for almost 25 years.

1

u/billions_of_stars 12h ago

How stressful are they? Or are they just the environment your dreams are taking place? Perhaps both?

u/Important-Factor-552 15h ago

lol trauma scars are for life fam

u/HoboKillah 11h ago

i spent 5 years as a A-ganger and 3 years were out to sea... never got a shore duty.

u/Pazzeh 4h ago

Ah, boomer

u/pooeygoo 3h ago

To them reenlisting means you must REALLY love it in there I guess

American nuclear subs seem to be pretty cool, they apparently have the best food in all the millitary because of how important morale is when you are underwater for weeks,

Also, millitary submarines are built by engineers who believe in the basic laws of nature, not a megalomaniac billionaire who believes to know better than actual scientists.

Like seriously this entire story is still so insane to me because the outcome was so ridiculousy obvious,

13

u/hulminator 14h ago

I forgot the topic of this thread and thought you were talking about Musk for a second lol.

u/doubleapowpow 9h ago

The food also has to be good because of the aforementioned farts

u/Pazzeh 4h ago

Brother I hear this shit and remember the time I ate nothing but fuckin frozen sausage patties, rice, and honey Sriracha for three weeks. Yes I was on a sub

u/HERR_WINKLAAAAA 3h ago

This is one of the videos i watched: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HGFUR7WmFP0

Maybe its all propaganda or its only on the most expensive ones lol.

u/Pazzeh 3h ago

Boomers and fast attacks are very different

u/HERR_WINKLAAAAA 2h ago

a submarine is a submarine to me i wasnt specifiying

u/Pazzeh 1h ago

The main difference, as far as food would go, is that there is more room for storage on boomers and they have very specific schedules, they know how long their patrol will be and can plan for it. So they might have better food. But fast attacks are smaller and not as precisely scheduled.

You do have to Volunteer to serve on a boat designed to sink, so no claustrophobic's need apply.

3

u/LobsterManCommander 15h ago

I mean... at least it's instant.

3

u/Important-Factor-552 15h ago

Submarine farts and dying horrible, what a strange combination of things to worry about constantly.

2

u/stratdog25 12h ago

It’s long, hard, and full of seamen. It’s kinda the dream.
