Thay road is especially fun when you encounter a fully loaded carrier truck, and you're on a narrow lane with a huge drop off, while driving a rental car you don't fully know the dimensions of yet haha. Had a few occasions of having to pass by trucks with about 2inches to spare on either side (truck vs cliff).

My wife and I have only been to Hawaii once, and that was on the island of Maui. I had planned to drive the Road to Hana, but we ended up winning a free excursion from the resort community we were staying at during the first day orientation. I can literally not fathom making that journey myself from friggin' Lahaina and doing the entire loop. Super memorable drive, but I was insane thinking I'd enjoy driving that all day.

Last time I went, we stayed a few nights in Lahaina, a couple nights in Hana and a couple up on the west side mountain, about 4000 feet up. It was the perfect way to explore. Especially checking out the road to Hana. No time crunch.

I stayed in Kanapali? Not going to google the spelling, but I drove from there all the way to the end of Hana and back in the same day.
I have never seen anything in my entire life like that drive. Planning on going back in a few months and am going to do it again but with a convertible this time.

If you do the road to Hana the change of scenery from east facing beaches to south facing beaches is incredible. It’s fairly abrupt as well.

I have a magnet that's still on my fridge AND a t-shirt I proudly wear frequently to this day haha- it felt especially necessary and earned since I did it solo over 2 days so I lean fully into the cheesiness of the merch 🙌💪😁

I did the Road to Hana over a 48 hour round trip because I got a permit and tent camped overnight at Waiʻānapanapa State Park, right next to the black sand beach...enjoying cocktails and takeout food from a roadside popup along the road at sunset on the black sand after setting up my tent, and then waking up to sunrise looking out from the cliffs to the black sand beach and the ocean was an insanely amazing experience. I wasn't rushed at all and stopped at every little waterfall, fruit stand, botanical garden, and hidden hike along the way in both directions because of my overnight camping stop. It was incredible ✨️🌊💙

I drove a Jeep Wagoneer on road to Hana. I want to say 1/10 would not recommend but it was still pretty fucking amazing.

My favorite part of the drive is that there are guardrails for the first 8,000 vertical feet of the switchback drive up the volcano. Then apparently they decided that if you made it that far you must be good, because the guardrails are just… gone for the rest of the climb. :)
Such an amazing experience. Well worth it.

After the guardrails disappear, there is one sign on the left side of the road going up that shows “no left turn” and it still makes me giggle thinking about why they had to put it there.

I was only there when I was a kid and we went for sunset so that's what I remember. Grew up on the Big Island and only got over to Maui ever couple of years.

I was up there earlier this year. It’s really cool driving above the clouds.
We went to watch the sunset and then stargaze. Between the elevation and lack of light pollution, I’ve never seen so many stars.

I have been there 3 times for sunrise and sunset’s. This weekend I plan to take my wife and daughter here for the first time for a sunrise. Trip to Maui may get canceled if the storm gets too close. Wait and see!

Luckily I went in December so I already had my winter jacket with me. I actually didnt know it was going to be cold until my tour guide for the road to Hana told me the day before it was going to be cold and to take a jacket with me when I was talking to them about my plans in Hawaii. (I went for the sunset because I didnt want to wake up thay early for the sunrise)

We do sunrise on the first day there because you're going to wake up early anyway from the time change.

I went to Haleakalā in June at sunrise to ring in my 60th birthday. Weather was perfect. Did not disappoint. There were native Hawaiian singers welcoming the sunrise. Absolutely gorgeous.

Drive this road, and the road to Hana. Both are amazing drives that provide distinct experiences, with the exception being that the road to Hana is not recommended if you get car sick easily.

Took a bike back down this mountain after watching sunrise. Just an incredible time.
You can look out from the mountain and see over nearly the whole island [IIRC]. So much color.

I drove it in the pitch black before sunrise. You could see headlights passing through the sunroof, then look down 300' and see headlights down there, too. That's one hell of a switchback.

it’s an ez drive if you take the south route from West Maui but it’s a white knuckle drive if you go the north road past Kapalua to Kahului.

It’s Haleakala. According to the legend if you see your shadow on the top of the clouds covered with rainbow, your soul goes to heaven. The only place where you need warmer clothes in Hawaii.
