Most of those one way traps (where flys can enter but can’t leave) rely on the dead flies trapped inside giving off a smell (which smells fucking disgusting 🤢). The problem with those traps is I found it attracted more flies than I originally had so I stopped using them.

Yep. Set up some baited wasp traps, and while I captured a lot of wasps, I attracted even more. The outdoor birthday was pretty much ruined and we had to go inside.

Put a small piece of fresh meat. As it rots, it attracts flies. Then the rotting flies attract more.

They really aren’t worth it. They are first of all, horrendously disgusting. The flies lay eggs in there, maggots hatch and eat the dead flies, they turn into flies themselves and lay more eggs. It turns into a rotting bag of wet flies. And second, like everybody else said, they attract more flies so you end up with the same amount or worse buzzing around your yard

I worked at a farm where the owner made fly traps like this using those big plastic drums. Over time they would fill with dead flys and become the most disgusting thing in the world

I find it also morally problematic to attract flies and then to kill them, if this fly otherwise would not have been in your house.

I had the same problem until I got a sundew plant and it has been laying waste to all the flies.

This is the same reason people shouldn't use beer traps for slugs. The slugs can smell that from much further away than the distance of the average homes property line (much less garden) and you just end up with more slugs coming to your garden than you could possibly catch

I make homemade indoor traps with yeast. It just smells like rising bread and won't get stinky as long as you refresh it every couple of days.
