Twelve years after a crash cost him both legs, Hayden Bailey has built a massive online following by showing what life after limb loss can look like, and by challenging the assumptions he once heard from medical professionals.

Bailey, known to his 2.2 million TikTok followers as the “Limb Loss Boss,” grew up in Sparland, Illinois.

On Oct. 5, 2013, he ran off the road in a single-vehicle crash. He said he has no memory of the accident due to internal brain bleeding.

“I ran off the road, went down into a ditch, and was pinned in my vehicle for, they said, six to eight hours,” Bailey said. His father found his car in the ditch, and he was airlifted to a hospital, where he spent 18 days in a coma and 47 days total before doctors amputated both legs through the knee.

But Bailey said he never saw the loss of his legs as the end of his former life.

“Everyone asked me in the hospital, ‘What are you gonna do now?’ And that seemed like such a weird question,” he said. “My initial goal was just to figure out how to get right back to where I was and enjoy myself doing all the things that I like to do.”

The social media career came much later, seven years after the crash, by accident. A TikTok video he posted “just for fun,” showing himself deer hunting without legs, went viral. Bailey has posted almost every day since, missing only a handful of days in five years.

His feed mixes humor, daily life with his kids, and demonstrations of how he uses prosthetics. It also includes a steady stream of messages aimed at dismantling misinformation about what bilateral above-knee amputees can do.

Bailey said early medical advice suggested his life would be severely limited.

“They said, ‘You’re gonna need a different job. You’re gonna use a wheelchair around the house. Your life’s gonna be very different now.’ And I didn’t take that for an acceptable answer.”

That changed when he connected with Dream Team Prosthetics in Oklahoma, which specializes in cases like his. Six months after his accident, he attended their Life Camp workshop and met others living active, independent lives with similar amputations.

“I saw all these examples of what’s possible,” he said. “My life basically went back to normal after that, and then it got even better.”

Bailey now uses his platform to share what he’s learned about prosthetics, especially “stubbies,” short prosthetic legs he often wears at home.

“They’re lightweight, they’re user-friendly, and they’re super easy to run around the house chasing the kids,” he said.

He hopes his videos help others see possibility where he was once told there were limits.

“Anything is possible,” Bailey said. “The only competition I have is myself yesterday.”

One of my parents has one leg and is very active; amputated below the knee after an accident and some forty years later still gets consistent abscesses from prosthetic rubbing wrong.

Between these guys’ endurance and ambitions, the thought of how painful this might be after the fact is grimacing to think about, the socks sweating and chaffing sensitive scar tissue, etc. hats off, this is incredible.

Aside from the core group, I wonder if there are guys who go out with them once or twice, deal with the pain after and shift from feeling, “I lost this activity.” to, “I can do it! But it’s a PITA so I’m choosing to focus on other stuff now.” A sense of agency makes such a huge difference across life.

I work with two guys that each wear one prosthetic leg.  Full sized prosthetic legs are tricky and cumbersome from what I've seen them experience. They both have tried more modern versions than the ones they have and chose to go back to one's that don't use batteries because they didn't like the newer options.  Apparently the main improvement with the newer options would allow them to climb stairs by articulating the knee for them but they both experienced problems with the legs not really doing what they were supposed to do.  I have no doubt there are more advanced options than what they tried but in my very limited experience, I don't think average prosthetics are anything like we'd expect in this new AI, robot world. I'm sure they are more stable on their own legs.

The main issue is not building something that move like a leg, like a robot (that in itself is not easy) the main issue is controlling it like you use to control your limbs.

There are also the huge advancements in brain computer interface of the 2 decades, we have current clinical trial for brain implant, but the non invasive version already allow random youtuber to beat elden rings with their thought.

These are called stubbies. They are used by bilateral amputees when learning how to walk/learning how to fall. They don’t have the benefit of knees to control their stance on loose soil and inclines. Microprocessor knees help with that but this is more stable. Also it uses less energy expenditure

What I see is passion and strength and sheer determination to enjoy life paired with the love of outdoor adventure and that is attractive. That’s what I’m attracted to in anyone. The fact that they have missing limbs is just a fact of their life. Also, dumb ass, clearly they are all very able.

This is from a completely free camp put on annually by Dream Team Prosthetics, out of Duncan, OK. It is open to any bilateral above-knee amputees. It’s probably one of the best things a person with that level of amputation could ever do to improve their mobility.
