Female scientists confirmed its existence and whereabouts years ago, but they have yet to find a male scientist willing to peer review it.

My friends dad rented us this from blockbuster. He was fairly hammered by the scene with the triple breasted lady whipped them out, and to this day I still remember him with the glee of a child at Christmas yelling out “a three titster !! He was an eloquent man.

Gloves or mittens?

u/Vermland 9h ago

Does he have to make special orders on gloves or does he cut one finger off?

u/rashypatch 9h ago

Neither. Plays jokes on his friends by slamming the empty glove finger in the car door. Only responds with an icy stare.

u/MrAntwah 7h ago

Can confirm the right answer is wear gloves anyway and let a glove finger be floppy / empty and continuously make jokes about like bending that finger back / being like aghhhh etc

Which is the middle finger?

u/Ignum 9h ago

Oh God. He can't flip anyone off :(

u/for_the_peoples 9h ago

Hey, he is the one with real middle finger. Rest of us mortals use fake middle adjacent finger.

u/Half4sleep 8h ago

You're not counting your thumb as a finger or what?

u/SuspiciouslySuspect2 8h ago

It's a thumb. It's it's own thing (doctors, don't you @ me about phalanges!)

u/p12qcowodeath 6h ago

It's a square/rectangle thing. All squares are rectangles, not all rectangles are squares.

All thumbs are fingers, not all fingers are thumbs.

My friend with 4 fingers slaps their hand with his once, and then pokes their open palm with one finger right after. Hilarious when he does that to people that don’t know he has 4 fingers

edit - I thought it was obvious without explicitly saying so, but this is what my four fingered friend does when someone is giving him a high five

u/worktogethernow 8h ago

What?

u/Doctor_DBo 8h ago

His friend with 4 fingers slaps their hand with his hand once, and then pokes their open palm with one finger right after. To equal 5. Seemingly it’s Hilarious when he does that to people that don’t know he has 4 fingers

u/Half4sleep 8h ago

Same goes for hands, arms, legs, lungs, eyes, noses, ears etc etc etc.... All below what the median has.

u/IronicAim 8h ago

I wonder how long that will be true. Polydactyl (6 fingers) is a dominant trait.

I’m genuinely curious, if it’s only one hand, can he tell the difference between his two hands. I mean like how does 4 fingers affect his grasp compared to his hand that has 5. Is it different feeling. And how does that affect the way he goes about using that hand. He probably wouldnt say it’s a weird feeling or difficult bc he’s adjusted to it his whole life. But as soon as I saw this I tried using four fingers and without my pinky i really noticed a difference. So I’m curious

u/Optimal_Whole1164 6h ago

This appears to be symbrachydactlyly, which can come in many forms. My son was born with it and he only has a thumb. It’s most common in boys and it usually affects the left hand, but can be the right or both. Less than 150 babies are born with this in the US every year. He’s still a baby, but he is remarkable. I have started using my hand just as my sons is and I have yet to find something I couldn’t achieve. I’ve learned to use a can opener, drive, tie my shoes one handed, cook dinner, alll the things I can think of so I can help teach him when the time comes. I imagine it’s much harder for typical handed people to pretend not to have fingers as opposed to those with a limb difference. I hope he grows up knowing he is just as capable as everyone else, because he is and we will find a way to achieve what ever he wants.

u/MrAntwah 4h ago

I've always thought what I had was something else but realizing now this is more closely aligned with my experiences (missing a digit / have some webbed fingers on that hand) Very much wanna thank you for sharing. Also while a missing digit, and only having a thumb are very different circumstances / levels of severity so to speak, there isn't anything that I haven't been able to do, and I know that was my parents biggest concern - so I just wanna say trust and believe your son will adapt and thrive.

Serious question for your friend. Being left-handed, I'm well-acquainted with the myriad things people never realize are made for right-handed people that dont work the same for left-handed people; scissors, rulers, mugs, cell-phones, etc.

Aside from gloves, what has your friend encountered thats a little "off" because we've designed everything with the expectation that everyone has 5 digits per hand?

u/RabbitsAreNice 8h ago edited 7h ago

Another serious question: is it just that one hand, or is it the other one?

Also, does your friend play any instruments? If so, did they have to figure out their own finger placements?

And one more: what would be some of the advantages they would have encountered, if any? Everyone always thinks of disadvantages, and I'm sure tyere are plenty given this is a world built around 5 digits per hand, but I'm sure they encountered some advanatages as well.

For example, I'm well above average height, and it's a pain to find clothes, shoes, beds, and ceiling fans built for people like me. Back pain is nuts, and my expected life span is shorter by about a decade. Yet I can list a bunch of advanatages I enjoy over people with average height (dating, reaching in high spots, being able to see performers at concerts, etc)

u/connain 8h ago

At 6 ft, I dont feel "tall" but its infuriating how many single person adult tents I've bought, only to find they're designed for under 6 ft. My head/feet wind up pressed against the lining, letting condensation and moisture accumulate. One of many minor inconveniences I've dealt with.

There's been plenty of times I've thought, it would be helpful to be a little shorter. Still, I'm quite happy with my height. Too many friends wish they were just a little taller. A few are taller than me and I feel a little bad for them, seeing my minor issues exacerbated for them.

My son was born with symbrachydactlyly, which is what this is. It’s not genetic. It’s a rare condition (less than 150 per year in the US), they don’t really know a cause but it’s thought to be a disruption in blood flow during weeks 4-8 gestation. We found out when our baby was born and he only has a thumb on one hand and no fingers, just nubbins. His other hand is “normal”. He’s only 8 months so we don’t what all his strengths are going to be yet but he is remarkable. One thing that’s easier for him right now, is fitting his whole hand/fist in his mouth. No need for a pacifier. Also, from research and watching testimonials, lots of people with this limb difference play instruments AND one girl said she can wash a cup better than anybody because her hand fits down in the bottom.

Scissors I know about, rulers I can wrap my head around, but how are mugs problematic for lefties?

u/Sheenapeena 8h ago

On mugs with a screw-in lid the opening is designed to be in one place only, and that is designed as if you pick it up with your right hand. Otherwise it is on the other side.

→ More replies (1)

u/connain 8h ago edited 8h ago

Its more design issue than functionality. Logos on mugs are designed to be read when held by a right-handed person. A left-handed person has the logo facing them so no one else sees it. It doesnt impact ability to use the mug and some people may not want to share. What it does, though, is show that the design of the mug is made for right-handed use.

Then, too, there are mugs with specialized handles that do feel wrong when held in the left hand but those are about as common as left-handed mugs so I didnt count them.

Edit to add, I was careful with my wording. I recognize the mug thing is nit-picking so my wording in my original question avoided indicating it didnt work, just that it doesnt work the same.

You can look at everything and get bitter, saying, see, they sleight us on all these things, even mugs! Or, you can look at life and laugh. Scissors dont cut right-handed, so we learn to be ambidextrous, go us. Rulers are backwards, so we compensate. Mugs are... backwards? Does it even matter? No, so it just makes me laugh as one of life's little idiosyncrasies. As a left-hander it can be fun finding all the little details most people never notice. Its like a not so secret club.

Thumb in the bum. Come on people! Rhyming is not difficult!

u/BADFiSH_c137 8h ago

Hey, “difficult” is a very difficult word to rhyme! Shmificult? Joinacult?..

u/keldondonovan 7h ago

I agree with your sentiment, rhyming is easy!
I see it underappreciated and feel rather queasy.
A flexing of linguistics, style and prose,
There's no better way to impress yonder bros,
So next when you need to rhyme with your thumb,
Remember u/afrigon and rhyme with your bum,
And when the time comes to rhyme with your finger,
Be quick with retort and do not ye linger.
Though I feel I must point out an occurrence, ironic,
In this reply demanding rhymes you're missing something iconic.
You've not rhymed at all, just demanded from others,
Shifted the burden onto your reddit brothers.
(Brothers I say, because women are myth,
Like birds and globe earth, or even the Sith.)
So next time you are compelled to take out some time,
Review another comment and demand that it rhyme,
At least have the decency to practice what you preach,
Show them your rhymes, the court is yours, teach.

I had a buddy that I worked with as a bartender. He wasn't born with 4 fingers in one hand, but he ended up that way due to an accident when he worked for the Post Office.

Anyways, usually on a busy night, he would wait until a customer ordered a 2nd drink and tell them he has to check if they are sober enough to still be served.

"How many fingers am I holding up?"

Never disappointed by the reactions.
