News The US Department of Energy is officially backing "industrial-scale bioleach" copper extraction as testing expands in Arizona.

The U.S. Department of Energy announced $10 million across seven early-stage Critical Materials Innovation Hub research selections on Aug. 26. Two focus directly on copper sulfides: Colorado School of Mines is working on hydro- and bio-hydrometallurgical extraction from primary sulfides, while the University of Arizona is studying nanobubbles, surfactants and reactive oxygen species to improve sulfide leaching.

The selections are entering award negotiations and are not funding commitments. Gunnison Copper, Nuton and Rio Tinto are not among the named project teams, and DOE did not connect either selected method to Gunnison's properties. The announcement is relevant as a technology signal, not as a company award.

Gunnison says finished cathode production from the Nuton circuit at Johnson Camp began in December 2025. Its July update described the operation as producing cathode from run-of-mine oxide material and from Nuton bioleaching of sulfide material. That is an industrial-scale demonstration; it should not be read as proof that every sulfide resource across Gunnison's district has a commercial recovery route.

The company is also expanding its own metallurgy program. As of Aug. 17, 68 of a planned 405 column-leach tests were underway, and 63 flotation tests had been added to examine copper, zinc and silver recovery from sulfide ores. Washington's newest research selections place a national spotlight on the same technical bottleneck, but Gunnison's test results and operating data will determine what its approach can deliver.
