Discussion Server provider doesn't support IPv6
Just found out the server provider I use doesn't support IPv6 unless you have one of their expensive dedicated servers provider is gthost.com. This sucks

change providers and tell them why :)

u/snow99as 2d ago
well I would love to if I could find another provider in my local area. Using them to proxy my connection for my home lab

why do you need local? is this colo where you need physical access?

No I run a few game servers which are latency sensitive also I'm trying to keep my page load times town for my website. Having above average latency or even a small amount of packet loss cause really bad rubber banding for my game servers.

unless there is peering in your market or they happen to buy transit from your home ISP nearby stuff will probably be similar.

Absolutely not in my experience. If you really are latency sensitive you need to select the DC very carefully.
Sometimes even a DC that's further away can have better latency because that's where they peer with your ISP. "If theres peering in your market" does not apply since OP probably has a home ISP which always need to be peered with anyway.
The best choice is to just ping servers in the DC and look at the latency. I found out this way that a DC only 20km away has a 15ms ping while one over 50 away has only 10.
You really can't be certain.

my point was that being physically close is really not likely to be that helpful with the majority of eyeball ISPs unless you are in a peering city [ORD,DCA,LAX,DEN,DAL,ATL,NYC,MIA, SJC or SEA] unless the datacenter network you are buying from buys transit from your retail ISP.
Unfortunately, most of the big broadband networks in the US really only peer with everyone in the above cities so if you don't live in one of those getting a datacenter in the nearest of those to your neighbors is what will probably be best barring anything like the datacenter using your eyeball network as transit.

Oh ok, yep I get what you're saying. But this is not universal. Yes often they peer in big cities but this might not always be the case. Best thing is to just try it if latency matters.

I found a IPv6 broker in my city. Extremely low latency to the server like two extra milliseconds so it's pretty good

If local to you happens to be around New Zealand voyager.nz our VPS’s come with IPv6 and v4 by default.

What’s the area? I have an ASN and I can try to see if I’m in that area with dual stack connectivity

Why do you need a proxy for your home lab? Can't get public IP on your home connection?
1
u/snow99as 1d ago
I can just prefer not exposing my pub IP to the world

u/sdoregor 1d ago
Well, you do you, but the Internet wasn't invented with privacy in mind anyway.

Well you have fun getting ddosed all because people want to be a bad sport about losing in a video game or they don't like your website. I don't care giving up my public IP when I visit a website I just refuse to host stuff publicly using my homes public IP when possible

You'll get DDoS'd anyway if someone wants to.

Yes but at least it's hitting the server provider and not my home network. I would prefer having the server die then my network

Huh? The very first thing gthost.com lists as a feature is "/64 IPv6 available upon request", you may just had contact with incompetent support staff… ask them again.

For VPS?
Or dedicated servers? Because OP says "doesn't support IPv6 unless you have one of their expensive dedicated servers provider is gthost.com" so OP doesn't have a dedicate server.

Well, shouldn’t matter, they don’t specify more than to ask for an IPv6 when you need one. As a potential customer, i would guess this is for all of their services.
But if they advertise this as a feature like that and don’t follow up on it when asked, i'd classify this as false advertisement. Which is, in some countries, not quite legal….

Where do they advertise they offer IPv6 on VPS?

u/Over-Extension3959 Enthusiast 1d ago
That’s my whole point, they don’t specify a service. So i would assume i can get an IPv6 on any of their services. But according to OP that’s clearly not the case. Which is imho false advertising.

It's available upon request.
They never said it's free.
If they said that you need to pay for their dedicated server first, it's not false advertising.

u/Over-Extension3959 Enthusiast 1d ago
Nobody is arguing about free or not, they just never say that this is not available for all products. But it is advertised as if it was available for all services and according to OP it’s clearly not.

What? I only know the converse: pay up if you want a precious public v4 address.
I guess that's North America vs rest of the world.

I had a similar issue. They said I have to move my VPS to west coast to get IPv6. I ended up just staying on IPv4.

Sounds like they intentionally do it to upsell their higher tier service.
I would change... It's ridiculous for anyone to offer IPv6 as a premium service considering how abundant and cheap IPv6 address space is... and it's been available for like two decades.... it's not a new bleeding-edge technology that should be locked behind a paywall.

What is the point of not working with ipv4? What is the advantage of using ipv6 when you can reach your VPS with a unique ipv4?
Other providers ask for additional money for ipv4,

I prefer being dual stacked. There is some services my server communicates with the are exclusively IPv6
