From what I've seen about the houses in Tokyo is that the can be any awkward size and shape but they seem to be built well. Surely there a middle ground.

I don't get why people want to prevent others from having tiny houses. I don't want a large house yet I am blocked by planning laws from making a small house for myself just because others don't want them.
The market will give what the people ask for. Right now people are asking for "luxury" apartments so that's all thats getting built.

obviously the above shouldn't be but unfortunately our current laws rule out very nice small apartments like you see in ikea. They also make small starter homes impossible to build unless you put them on wheels which brings on more cost and issues if your trying to save up for a larger house. For some people its a step up to a larger house and for others its exactly what they want.
They do it in northern Sweden for a lot cheaper then the equivalent planning approved small house, and in much worse winter weather / more isolated regions too. With Ireland being so small, you will alwasy be within 45 minutes of a major town, the arguments against it make no sense.

Really it's that others don't want you to have one, for a whole host of reasons:
If you build a small house in the neighbourhood, it might lower the average property values, making your well-off neighbours slightly less well-off on paper.
Small houses wouldn't usually be occupied by families, meaning the residents will be more transitory as they'll move away when they decide to start a family, meaning more change, and change is bad, mmmkay?
Small houses are cheaper and therefore attractive to less wealthy people, and we can't have that in our respectable neighbourhood, now can we?
"You" might be a landlord who will build your small house just to let it out, possibly to a poor person who will only live there a short time, thus creating the unholy trifecta of lower property values, residents changing more often, and non-wealthy people being in the area, thus completely ruining the lives of all of your neighbours forever.

I'm not trying to be rude but that's not a brag a lot of very very silly decisions were made during that time construction wise so much so that 20 years on and were still dealing with some of the fallout
now thankfully most of the Ghost Estates have been cleaned up one way or another but yea in my town was a Ghost Estate abandoned in 2009 for almost 16 years it sat there rotting away before it was finally pulled down in January 2025 and a little earlier in 2026 an actual housing development was finished and tbf it looks a lot nicer than what the original plan would have been
