Science & Environment The only land mammal left in Jamaica - The Jamaican Coney (Geocapromys brownii)

The Jamaican Coney, also known as the Jamaican Hutia, is only found in Jamaica and is Jamaicaโ€™s last native land mammal (bats are considered mammals and many native bat species live in Jamaica, but they are not terrestrial). The coney is around the same size as a rabbit, they are mostly nocturnal animals and their diet consists of fruit and the leaves of many different plant species. They form strong bonds with each other and have been observed playing with and grooming each other.

They are classified as endangered by the IUCN, due to introduced non-native species, habitat loss and hunting.

Culture I hated Durvan Malcolm but still kinda sad he's gone

It goes back to my personal gripe with him...the very first day I started Calabar High school. I've mostly blocked my memories of that place from my mind., but when I heard of his passing I had to reflect a bit.

See, the very first day of Calabar, an overgrown boy , probably 13yo while I was 11,started picking on me while walking to the school, like at 7 am, so b4 my actual first day of school even start. He was heckling me and I didn't respond much. When we got into the class (I was surprised that he was actually in my class) he started pushing me, so I started pushing back, and so there was quite a hub hub with all the other students making noise.

So who should come along at that point but none other than Dervan Malcolm, the headboy (who was extremely speakey spokey even back then)...and his back up Adrian the deputy (a story to himself when I was almost done with C-Bar). Dervan settled the situation but instead of finding out what happened he gave the entire classroom detention, and as they put the blame on me, lead on by the overgrown boy, Dervan sent me home, which I am now sure was beyond his "headboy powers". However being a little kid I just went home. The next day I came back, the other boys despised me. I was the pariah of the class, including being newly titled with a terrible nickname...AND the overgrown boy was now the most popular kid....AND my sworn enemy. (Luckily he stayed the same size, and I was a head taller than him by 9th grade. He was also in the dumb class and I was in the smart class)

This event pretty much set the tone for my next 7 years of hell at that place. It was one of those things where the causative agent forgets all of that by the next day, but has the effect of being a life changing experience for the other person.

As I left school and grew up and lived life, I would see Dervan's success milestones in the public arena. I resented the shit out of him. But over the years my views softened a bit as I came to appreciate what he bought to the table, as would I turn on the radio as I drove and happen upon his show every now and then. His concern for matters and for people experiencing then seem sincere. Not too long ago I seriously considered calling his show and airing my grievances with him. But I'm the type of person who forgets to do stuff as soon its not immediately in front of me.

When I heard of his passing and what might havs transpired to cause it, I could feel a bit of "a good" popping up in my spirit, but that didn't transpire long.

The other voice in me asks, who knows...based on who I think he became...I would have probably gotten some closure.

And so it is that that call will never happen. And that makes me sad.

Help Can you guys recommend legitimate, reasonable car marts/dealership in the kingston and St. Andrew area?

Vehicle fraud and scams are high in Jamaica. With that being said, for persons who have experience in purchasing a car, could you recommend some dealerships/car mart. Thankyou

Language & Patois Expression "move up"

Dont jamaicans sometimes say "move up" to someone to tell them to get away from them, or to essentially tell someone stop their nonsense, or am i imagining things? Somebody tried to tell me jamaicans only say it in a positive manner, which confused me. Ive been around caribbean ppl for years, so i thought i knew, but im also autistic so sometimes expressions are hard for me

Crime & Law What if some of these C-TOC (police who walk around and kill gunman left right and center) are serial killers and sociopaths and psychopaths, but they just happen to be on the "right side of the law" currently?

What if these police got the opportunity to be a hitman? They'd probably do it at the drop of a hat.

I used to think highly of the police, but I'm starting to despise them for being too licky licky and dishonest.

What if they're just serial killers walking around with a badge number and a gun and blue uniform.

Crime & Law Cop shook me down for 50k and I wasn't even doing anything illegal. I hate all police.

Bribe money we talking . Used to have lots of respect for the police for how they get rid of certain criminals, but I now think they're the real criminals.

wasn't doing anything illegal, police used some scare tactic and shook me down for 50k... Traumatized my girlfriend while he was at it.

I'm gonna get my revenge. It definitely won't include violence, but I'll carry this grudge against the whole JCF till the day I die.

Fuck those bitch ass niggas โœŒ๐Ÿพ

edit: I did the math, it was actually closer to 35k.. so I guess they got 17k a piece. Also, I used to always defend the police when citizens made negative remarks. But unfortunately, I've come to a sharp 180ยฐ. Fuck the police, and I hope the parents of those 2 cops get chronic illnesses and that the 2 cops have to spend a lot of money to keep their parents alive ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿพ

Music Trying to remember a song.

There's a song I like and I always hear it in mixes but can't remember the name right now. It's a song where the artist starts out repeating something like, "I'm neverrr gooona *waait too late*". I think it's a song where the bassline disappears for a bit then comes through once he stops repeating himself. The last portion of the quote isn't accurate but that's the closest I can get right now.

Citizenship & Immigration How to contact the jamaican consulate in Toronto

So i'm in canada trying to get my ontario driver's license, right? I have a license from jamaica that was valid from 2021 - 2025 and then I went homw and renewed this july.

I know that when you have a license from another country, sometimes they let you skip some of the waiting time between the different tests you need to do to qualify for the ontario license, but you need a confirmation letter validating the licence and all of these things.

I reached out to the tax office back home and dem seh dem nuh know bout nuh letter. So me seh fine, I'll try to look about it in toronto so I don't have to try and figure out the process from overseas.

People, not only is this consulate only open *half day* for *three days a week*, but dem phone number dont work! It goes straight to the recorded message and then hangs up!

Knowing how large the diaspora is and how spread out things are in canada i really do feel like their operation should be more serious than this.

Entertainment Cuban AM radio signals heard on North Coast of Jamaica

in the 1990s when i used to live in Kingston, Jamaica. i used to visit Portland to see my mother's friends. i carry an AM/FM walkman. when i tuned to the AM band i could hear clear radio signals from Cuba. they are so strong that they are like local stations a few miles way during the day time. something different from the depressing American music that played on Jamaican radio at the time. with the recent power outages in Cuba. are those AM same radio signals still strong on Jamaica's North Coast?

I added okra, onions and eggplant

The sauce is mango, pineapple and apple cider vinegar.

My dish was done within 5 minutes lol

I got a piece of chicken (I was cooking all day so I didnโ€™t feel like eating) but at the bbq I was encouraged to take a โ€œto go plateโ€

Help Which toyota should I get?

So guys I need your help. I'm about to buy my first car. I had decided on a toyota aqua but someone who rents another section of the house that I live has one. So now I'm deciding last minute to get a different car. Wanna purchase by the end of sept. I'm a male going into my mid 20s. Was planning on a 2020, budget $2 million but don't mind going a little over that if I have to. I'm looking at the smaller cars Aqua/fit/Yaris etc. The yaris caught my attention but I don't want to "pursue" it and end up having buyer's remorse. I've not heard much people recommending it. The fit is my least favourite. Car enthusiasts help me out. Pretend I'm your son, brother, nephew or friend.

Nb. I prefer to ask this here over a car sub because not every car exist in Jamaica or is for jamaica.
