The study of martial arts is not about what is the best style or is it about winning or losing. It is a way of life. Keep an open mind and compare it to religion, only compare, all martial arts teach self defense, all martial arts, with this in mind compared to religion all teach about God some are born into a particular belief while others get to choose others get to choose. The fact remains that only the person makes the martial art work never the other way around.

Plenty of martial arts make people believe they can defend themselves without giving them the skills to do so.

Martial arts is about beating the other person before they beat you.

Everything else is secondary.

Yes you can get a lot of other things out of training but never forget what it is you're actually doing.

You're preparing for violence.

Do you think point fighting is preparing one for actual violence?

Light contact, uniforms, no shoes, a referee will stop the match if someone hits too hard, or too long etc. These seem like the exact opposite of non-consensual violence.

More prepared than someone who doesn't train.

But I do agree that point fighting wkf style is.. Not karate and not good preparation for real violence.

Not because of the lack of shoes or light uniforms but due to how points are scored and the general lack of fighting spirit.

It tends to turn into playing footsie and quick taps with little regard to protecting yourself.

While we're on topics that piss people off, I also don't think kata should ever be a competition. It makes as much sense as boxers competing in speedbag.

Depending on what someone considers to be "teaching" self defense - there are plenty of martial arts that do not teach self defense.

All martial arts provide some component that may give you an advantage, but so does Track, Tennis, Weight training etc. Anything that helps our fitness is technically assisting in getting away from violence, but point fighting for instance creates muscle memory one would not want to use in a violent encounter.

Martial arts are about violence not religion. There are many niches under the umbrella of martial arts but at its core it is a reaction to violence.

If you want to make your martial arts about religion, go ahead, but please don’t come to this sub and proselytize.
