Question How to eat low carb when eating out?

Hi all,

I am very new to the low carb world. I wast told by my gp to eat low carb (staying to less than 5g/100g of carbs), in order to try reverse pre diabetes.

I'm trying to figure out how to still lead a normal life and occasionally eat out in what I now learned is a carb heavy world. I went to a fish and chips shop with my family and even their grill'd fish is dusted in flour so is unsuitable. I ended up just waiting to eat when I got home 😞.

How are you all eating out, what do you look for?

Please don’t let another great keto product disappear 😭 Pure Eden Jams

Post image

I’m honestly getting tired of some of my favourite keto-friendly products disappearing from Australian stores — like Whole Earth Milk Chocolate and Steeves Maple Syrup. One product I really hope doesn’t disappear is Pure Eden Jam. It’s affordable, the sweetener ingredients are relatively clean, and allulose is the main sweetener. It also has a low net-carb count per 100g, which makes it a really convenient keto-friendly option. They have several flavours, including:

🍓 Strawberry 🫐 Blueberry ❤️ Raspberry 🍑 Apricot

In WA, I’ve seen Pure Eden Jams at Spudshed and IGA, as well as through online shopping malls. Pure Eden Jams are really delicious.

I really hope this product sticks around long-term. 🙏 Honestly, I’d love to see it become more widely available at Woolworths and Coles too. It would be great to have an affordable, keto-friendly jam that’s actually easy to find. Has anyone else tried Pure Eden Jam? What do you think?

Question How much are you spending per week on groceries?

I see other posts in other subs with people spending much less. I’m spending $300 on average per week for one person. I usually make one batch recipe per week, like pulled pork or ragu or burger bowls. The other days I bbq something or eat something out of the freezer.

What’s everyone else spending and eating?

Here’s a sweetened Hazelnut almond milk iced coffee w/ a hazelnut cream on top and some chocolate dusting to finish. (Helps me have an incentive to complete my assessments).

Just felt proud of my improving home made coffee skills 🥺

Hazelnut syrup: Jordan’s Skinny Syrup Sugar Free Hazelnut

Chocolate powder: Avalanche Sugar Free Drinking Chocolate

Edit: I re-use this Maccas takeaway cup since it’s cute & easy to make these sort of drinks in !! 🦋

Question Alternative flour to use in cheese sauce?

I would like to make a cheese sauce, and don't want to use the cream cheese/high fat option. But wheat flour simply has too many carbs and I can only make a tiny quantity if I use it.

Has anyone used an alternative flour to make cheese sauce at home?

Thank you

New product Sugar replacement???

I’m exploring what sugar substitutes are out there and what some offer compared to others, and I’m interested to know, do you guys buy the ones that taste closest to sugar or are you more concerned about the health benefits/risks. I can swing each way but don’t really know where to start. Thanks :)

Chris' Hommus vs Willow Farm snack size packs

I'm a bit of a fiend for Hommus, so had been buying the Willow Farm 3 pack snack size ones for a while to keep my portion size in control.

Last week found these Chris' ones that look almost identical, but have no added sugar and are only 3.9g carbs per container vs the Willow Farms at 6.9g carbs. Sharing for any other Hommus heads out there.

NB I tend to add lemon juice and some water to thin mine out so it goes a bit further. Awesome on a mission LC wrap with some euro style meat

Question Do they carbs on these seem correct relative to ingredients?

Thumbnail

I've had the sausages before and they didn't seemed to kick me out of ketosis. Then I noticed the rissoles. I'm glanced over them before thinking they'd be a no go because rissoles have crumb coatings and have a texture like cooked sausage mince.

But I looked at the carbs and they are shockingly low - the same as the sausages (ignore the 706grams of sugar lol, im guessing its missing a decimal at the start?).

Do the carbs seem correct relative to the ingredients? I'm seeing rice flours, wheat, and starches which are making me question them - unless they are truly minimal (but i thought Australian ingredients listing standards have the ingredients listed from highest to lowest, so if the beef is 70% of the product...)

New sugar free Liptons sparkling iced tea

Recent product ColesWorth $4 per bottle. Sweeteners 950 AceP, 955 Sucrulose, 960 Stevia are not the best but it tasted great and I will buy as soon as it is on half price. Came in several flavours but I have only tried the Tropical. The non sparkling Liptons is frequently on half price so I assume this will be also.

Looking for sugar free maple syrup recommendations now that Steeves is gone :(

Post image

Woolies confirmed that they will no longer be stocking the Steeves Sugar Free Maple Syrup (side note, if you love it too please provide them that feedback as they consider stocking options based on demand and they're keeping the Steeves standard Maple!).

It became a staple in my household and I'm not a fan of the Queen one.

Any suggestions appreciated, even if it's not maple per se, let me know if there are any other sugar free syrups worth trying!

Question Cheesecake instant jello mix alternative?

Hey fellow aussies, what is a good alternative to the American popular jello instant cheesecake pudding mix? Or anyway to re create the mix at home? Annoys me the amount of times I see it in recipes and ninja creami recipes but I can’t find it anywhere here in Aus. Thank you!

I've been checking multiple ALDIs for a while and this hasn't been available.

Edit: Confirmed with Leichhardt ALDI this was discontinued and no plans for anything similar :( https://www.aldi.com.au/product/inner-goodness-organic-unsweetened-almond-milk-1l-000000000000400242

Anyone know something similar in macros, taste and low price please?

Problem Nooooo John West changed their mackerel

I've been having Scottish mackerel in brine for years from Woolworths/Coles but over the last week all I can find is Jack Mackerel. It's like it never existed at Woolies. It's not even online. And the macros are very different. Practically the same packaging, slightly more expensive and they have the nerve to still advertise it as high in Omega when it is clearly not :( I don't want to be eating two and a half cans a day for similar nutrient value.

And it's no longer on the John West website. This sucks!! https://johnwest.com.au/our-range/specialty-seafood/mackerel#sort=%40weightage%20ascending

Edit: Alternative found in comments. Will leave this post up so folks know the Jack is very different and no longer available from John West.

Gem of a find, this is a Malaysian drink with zero cals, carbs and sugar. I only found this flavour at Coles for $3, but I am honestly surprised by how flavourful this drink is. If you like lychee then trust you won’t be disappointed.

Sweeteners included: Erythritol (968), Ace K (950), Sucralose (955) for anyone was curious

Diet-Rite salt or Heart salt?

Recently had to replace my diet-Rite lite salt, and found that it is no longer stocked at Woolies. They now have 'Heart Salt', but on reading the label found that this diet salt also contains Thaumatin, a very potent artificial sweetener. So I'm off to Coles to get some of the original diet-rite lite salt!

Hair loss (shedding) - Telogen Effluvium

Has anyone experienced diffuse loss of hair volume?

I thought I was paranoid- then I googled it. No apparently this is a thing. Anyone else experienced this after a few months of keto? I noticed it about 4 - 5 months in. Bit scary...
