Discussion I'm looking for artists blending traditional and Western/contemporary music, like Song So-hee?

For context, I just recently discovered Gyeonggi Minyo and found it fascinating and refreshing to the ear after stumbling on a concert clip of Song So-hee and her song Nansen (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tIEh4uM9vjc ). I found it so good, this blend of two such radically different musical worlds, that I went and listened to her latest EP "RE:5" — but I didn't connect with it as much, it's way more pop. I'm guessing she'll probably drop a future project closer to that Nansen sound at some point.

So to feed my endless need for auditory stimulation, I'm looking for artists/bands who, in a similar spirit, try to blend traditional music with rock — psych, alt rock, and even shoegaze (I'd be in heaven with that one). Basically, even more radical!

Thanks in advance for the help

Seventeen Korean acts I keep coming back to. If you like any of these, give the playlist a listen.

R&B [MusicBuffet-MC] Where the Rain Remains | A Heartbreaking Korean R&B Ballad for Rainy Nights

Thumbnail

“Where the Rain Remains” is an intimate Korean R&B ballad about a love that still returns with the rain, even after you thought the memories had finally faded.
Raindrops on the window, an old bus stop, a familiar song heard somewhere in the distance.
On certain rainy nights, emories we thought were gone quietly find their way back.

A breathy and intimate male vocal is accompanied by close-miked acoustic piano, warm Rhodes, subtle nylon guitar, round bass, and a restrained rhythm section.

News Busan Ovantgarde to Be Suspended for Two Months Starting August 24

Ovantgarde, a live music club in Busan where bands like Say Sue Me have performed, has been ordered to suspend operations for two months starting August 24. The reason for the suspension is that the club allowed customers to dance. Ovantgarde is registered as a restaurant, and in South Korea, restaurants are not allowed to let customers dance. I think this decision is strange.

R&B [MusicBuffet-MC] A Beautiful Night | Warm Korean Indie R&B to Unwind After a Long Day

“A Beautiful Night” is a warm Korean indie R&B song about slowing down at the end of a busy day and giving yourself a little time to rest.
Sometimes we spend the whole day rushing from one place to another, only to realize that we may have left our own feelings somewhere behind.
Warm Rhodes piano with jazzy chords, gentle electric guitar, a relaxed bass groove, minimal drums,
and a soft conversational male vocal come together in a cozy blend of Korean indie R&B and neo-soul.

Perfect for:

• A quiet walk at night
• Relaxing after work
• Coffee time
• Late-night drives
• Reading or resting
• Moments when you simply want to slow down

The Seoul-based band takes pansori, (Korea’s centuries-old tradition of powerful musical storytelling), and brings it starkly to the present, building a wildly kinetic sound, from elastic basslines (with not one, but TWO bassists), drums, and a chorus of voices and personalities that can move from whispering ideas to full-throated release in a matter of seconds.

Discussion Thoughts on LEE SEUNG YOON's old vs new songs

So if you don't know Lee Seung Yoon, he's an indie rock singer who gained massive popularity in Korea after he won a singing competition “Sing Again”. You might know Lee Mujin, who won second place. Seung Yoon’s loved for his lyricism, and his discography is just so good.

Recently he released a two disc, 29-track album titled “Album 0” where he re-recorded a bunch of his old songs from his underground days. I recommend reading up on it on Genius, his thoughts and reasons behind doing so are super interesting. The album was actually my first introduction to him, and recently I thought about comparing the old versions of the songs to the new versions.

It’s been very interesting! Many of the songs are from his old band, Alary-Kansion, while some of them are solos. I didn’t think the differences would be so stark, but you can hear such a change, not only in the composition but in the way he sings the song! It makes sense, since it’s been around 10 years since the original vs the re-recording. It’s also crazy seeing the song sort of, “devolve”, for lack of better wording. Of course, the base is the same, but there is something fundamentally different about them, Since my first exposure to each song was its 2026 version, my very first impression was that of a Seung Yoon who has released 2 albums, performed at international festivals, held a multitude of concerts, and has over a decade of music experience. But when I’m listening to the 2013, 2016, 2019 versions of the songs, I’m listening to the voice of an underground artist who hadn’t even imagined brushing mainstream.

I do prefer the 2026 versions, but I’m glad I listened to the originals because it’s given me a whole new perspective on why they’re so good. In interviews he talked about how he’s been performing these songs live for years, and with each performance they slowly changed and improved, bit by bit. From his perspective the songs weren’t truly complete when he released them. They were slowly perfected every time they were performed live, until they became what they are today and he realised he had to re-record them to present them the way they currently exist. I’ve never thought about it this way before, as a musician you’re honing your craft every time you perform, it makes sense that your songs would change alongside you.

It’s just very cool to me. I also love that even though he technically became a soloist, the members of his old band are still right there with him lol. They’re still performing together, both on stage and on the tracks, it’s just that the branding is different. In a way they never even disbanded.

(If you haven't listened to him before, my personal favourites are NARAGAZA, Warped Exterior, and Shelter of Dreams)
