Help! Color changing holes

I just started working on a tapestry and I’m struggling with color changes. There seems to be a big hole left behind each time, and increasing tension isn’t fixing it. It’s worsened when the color change continues in the next row like in the second picture. Anyone deal with this before?

If you are knitting intarsia you need to twist the yarns together on a color change

Seconding this, I always have my new color come in a few stitches before the actual color change by weaving it under and over the working yarn repeatedly until I work up to the point of a color change. Then I do the color change and repeat weaving the old color over and under the new color. This locks the yarn in place stopping it from opening up and leaving a hole where the color change takes place

It is!!! It’s pretty cool in person, it has a sort of velvet look that I haven’t seen in other magnetics.

knitter here! if they’re loose ends i duplicate stitch them into the adjacent stitch (of the other color) before weaving them in normally. you can’t see it from the front but it connects them as if they’re knit with one continuous piece of yarn
