Learning Kurdish

Hey guys! So I plan to meet my partner’s family in December and they’re Kurdish, don’t speak English, so I plan to learn Kurdish, so I can have conversations with them without the need for my boyfriend to translate what I say. Can someone help me with learning it? Like, from where to start?

Get onto preply or italki to find a teacher.

I compiled a list of resources a while ago that I try to keep somewhat up-to-date.

There is also a free online class put on the KRG that is starting up again in October. If you're interested I can get you the signup details when I have them.

The class is a bit chaotic though. Even the intro-level class happens entirely in Kurdish. If you are highly motivated and have the time to learn on your own, I think it can be a great supplement.

There’s an app kinda like Duolingo called "KurdishClass" that teaches both Sorani and Kurmanji, It starts off with the basics like “hello” and “how are you”, then moves on to numbers and stuff like that, I haven’t personally tried it but it looks like a pretty solid place to start

Hey! Since you’re starting from scratch and have a real deadline in December, I’d recommend learning in a structured way rather than just memorizing random words.

I’m actually the developer of Kurdziman, a Kurdish-learning app focused on Kurmanji. You can use it to build up vocabulary and grammar step by step.

https://kurdziman.com

If you want, try it and tell me what you need specifically for your goal of being able to talk to your partner’s family. I’d genuinely like to improve the app based on feedback from learners like you. 🙏
