If you want to check your clear stock for imperfections, you need one of these. A little blob of crap shows up like a rainbow star in the glass. I must admit, I was kind of bummed at how good that Chinese bong looked.

These are both made with cfl reactive glass. Little guy is a pendant, larger jar is for whatever haha

I’ve got a chili pepper kiln that i started on, it’s been really useful and solid for me, but after a year I upgraded to a “regular” kiln. Would you keep your chillipepper if you’d upgraded? Do you find yourself needing a travel kiln or a demo kiln often?

I could use the recouped funds, but idk how easy it would be to replace looking down the line.

For the longest time every bead I pulled off the mandrel looked like a little potato. Not round, not even a consistent oval, just lumpy on one side no matter how careful I thought I was being. I torched almost every weekend for about four months before something clicked.

The big shift was slowing down my mandrel rotation and actually watching gravity do its thing instead of fighting it. I used to spin fast and constantly reposition the glass with the flame, which meant I was basically fighting the melt the whole time instead of letting it settle. Once I started rotating slower and using gravity to pull the molten glass into a more even shape before adding more, the symmetry improved almost immediately.

Second thing was heat distribution across the whole bead, not just the front facing me. I had a bad habit of only heating the side I could see clearly and neglecting the back, which is exactly why my beads always had that flat spot. Now I make a point of rotating a full 360 in the flame before I even think about shaping, checking the glow color evenly around the whole thing.

Also switched from a soft flame to a slightly hotter, more focused flame for the base bead before backing off for detail work. I was babying the heat the whole time before, worried about shocking the glass, but that actually left me working with glass that wasn't hot enough to move properly.

Still get the occasional lopsided one, especially with bigger beads where I'm holding more weight on the mandrel, but the ratio of good ones to rejects has flipped completely. Curious if anyone else went through a similar plateau with roundness specifically, feels like one of those things nobody really explains well in tutorials since it's mostly muscle memory once you have it.

The top one is Plum Kush or Krazy.

The bottom one is probably Carmel, Silver Creek or Butterscotch.

The middle one could be Trans Green, Silver Seaweed, Dark Multi, Mystery Adventurine, Maybe Green Amber Purple or Green Exotic?

These are all made from those random 4 Oz North Star jars we all have laying around and this list is the likely culprits from my pile. I hoping someone here will recognize these and help me identify them so I can order more (I had a special request :)

Determined to go bigger on the axis flip on the body now. Was right over 80mm when I flipped the section

I have this piece for a water pipe I wanted to see if I could modify. Long story short this small whole at the bottom of the conical feature is too small and restricts too much air.

How would any of you recommend I approach reaming that hole out a bit more so it lets more airflow through, if it's even possible?

I'm pretty handy as I'm a toolmaker by trade so I could probably figure it out with some instruction. I have a few torches of various sizes that I could use to heat it up but obviously I don't want to break it. I'd even be open to cutting or grinding it open it somehow if that's even possible.

Hi all. I have built a home studio for flameworking but the ventilation is giving me issues thats causing me to question my own knowledge so here I am hoping i can get some peace of mind and hope i havent been killing myself all this time haha. The space is 8x10' with an 8' ceiling. Im running a carlisle cc with a Bethelham sharp flame as a mini torch, with the occasional carlisle 4 port bunsen burner being thrown into the mix. I have an 1150 cfm fan directly in front of my torch which is circled in second photo, it is ducted straight up with the only bend being at the opening which meets the fan direcly and out of my shop at around 8 ft up. I have a 48"x42" hood with its lowest points mounted at 24" above the face of my torch.

I also have 3 passive air intakes in the shop which are also circled in the images I provided. They do not have individual fans and work off of the negative pressure that pulls from the main fan in front of me, im aiming for laminar flow from the 3 vents.

When I run smoke tests, the system does well at pulling smoke out from the room but sometimes i feel it could pull air faster as if i run incense tests i can still smell the fume and see some wisps of smoke trailing off before being pulled away. I can provide video if youd like to see. I do have a carbon monoxide detector and I notice if I keep the small window closed it occasionaly will spike up to 50-60 but if window is open I dont get any spikes on the detector at all.

But, and this is my biggest worry....every single time I work whether it be 1-2 hours or an entire day I almost always walk away with a sore throat and wake up the next day feeling not so great for the first hour or two of the day and I can't quite figure out why. I fear im still trapping carbon monoxide or something else from the combustion, or off gasses from the glass and breathing it in. I just wanna make my art man, this has been destroying my mind all year long as i cant figure it out.

So I want to hook up my GTT mirage to a MAD hatter pedal and into propane and oxygen tanks

I would appreciate any info/advice (or sale of if your in AZ) on an hvlp system. I was thinking of buying like 1 or 2, 80 gal compressor tanks and thoroughly cleaning and getting a little oil free compressor and hooking up my oxy cons to that. But would i need anything else ? Is there a better option? Should I just save and get an oxyfrog/HVLP/ DPGoxygen ?

I’m working with borosilicate, the color is Mighty Moss. It’s layered over clear rod.

I’ve created pieces like this before where and they’ve not cracked. Now I have 5 birds and they’ve all cracked in little pieces.

Going into the kiln looking beautiful and coming out of the kiln with the cracks.

I’ve used rods that were successful in previous projects and then I ordered a batch of new color…… and it’s cracking too.

The kiln is at 1050.

Any ideas?
