Report spammy bullshit

Over the past couple days I have received a spike in reports on Mowrator trying to use an astroturfing campaign by spamming our sub. I don't see everything, so please hit that report button if you come across one, and I will remove it and ban that user.

For the most part, everyone here makes it easy to manage. You generally get along. You help each other out. You call out spam when you see it. Let's keep that up and keep this sub free of bullshit. Thank you for making my job as a mod easy.

Can someone identify this handle

I have a walk behind zero turn 32" 2 blade lawn mower with a 15hp Kawasaki engine. It has no identifying make or model. I bought it probably 15 years ago from a landscaping company that was replacing it. It served me well up until today when the handle you pull to make it turn left broke. Pictured is the handle. I can take pictures of the mower but it looks like it could be just about anything.

Anyone have a clue on what part that handle is so I can get a replacement? I'm going to stop by a repair shop tomorrow but I thought I'd also ask here.

Thanks!

Toro Timecutter--cuts too low

Upvotes

Having issues with my toro timecutter!! It cuts too low, i need to cut grass at about 4.5 and its cutting at like half that. Anybody have any ideas? Here are the facts:

  1. Purchased used.

  2. I have adjusted the front deck adjustment all the way and it still cuts too low.

  3. I replaced the rear deck hanging bracket and the support piece and it is also adjusted to the limit.

  4. the anti-scalp wheels do not seem to be the issue.

5.I can't find any other adjustments. Since I got this used, is it possible that someone replaced the spindles with the wrong ones?

6.The blades are currently at about the same level as the bottom rim of the deck and the deck IS NOT bent. I have brand new tires on it and they are all the correct size.

7.I have the deck adjustment level at the very top, 4.5” and it still cuts very short, about half that. This is the way it has been cutting since I got it a few years ago, but i finally have some time to try and fix it.

Any suggestions? I'd appreciate it

.4 acre property - recommend me a new lawn tractor

Newish homeowner here who has an 18-in. non self propelled craftsman push mower. Using it to cut my .4 acre property and after mowing and trimming it takes around 2 hrs so just trying to save time with a tractor. Plus would use it for rounding up leaves in the fall as well (have lots of trees surrounding property line). Property is mostly flat with some small inclines.

Want to buy American and need a 42 or 46” deck so it can fit in my shed. Only ever owned craftsman mowers in my life and they have served me well. Open to other Mtd mowers, John Deere, etc. want to stay 3k and under for price.

Located in OH so mowing season is may-sep and leaves are sep-nov

I also don’t want a zero turn and only want a tractor so don’t recommend zeros

Zero Turn Recommendations

Hello! New to riding mowers entirely. My wife and I just purchased a house on 2.5 acres in central Arkansas (Cabot area). Didn’t realize how many brands and types of mowers there are. Any suggestions on deck size, transmission size, brands to steer away from or zero in on. Or anything that would be way too much mower for our size yard. Anything is appreciated.

Toro Timecutter loud click but won’t start

Hey yall. I’ve got a Toro Timecutter SW 4200 with a v twin 24.5 engine and every time I try to start I just get a loud click. I’ve tested the battery, replaced the starter and the solenoid, tried popping out the spark plugs to check for compression issues, and tried starting while hooked up to my truck battery. Blades are up. Cannot for the life of me get this thing to turn over. Hoping someone might have some sage advice for me. Video attached with some commentary from my helper. Thanks yall!

Which one would you choose?

I’m trying to choose between these 3, I’m not sure if going with an old commercial mower would be better than a newer cub cadet. I’m more than confident that I can replace the drive belt and pulley on the ZT2

Tearing Up Lawn

I’ve got an issue with tearing up my lawn every time I mow. I’ve got Bahia sod that was laid 2 months ago in central Florida. It’s a very sloped property and it’s been raining almost daily. Mowing with an Ariens Edge 52.

Any time I turn I either spin tires, dig ruts, or lock up the tire and scrap sod.

The sod seems to be well rooted at this point. Is there any fix?

Atco Rider 27H oil fuel contamination/leak

With the extreme weather this summer my ride-on has sat unused for several months. When I have come to use it all of the petrol I had left in the tank (yes, I know) was on the floor mixed with oil.

Oil level was high and I could smell petrol in the oil. I've changed the oil and given it a ride around without engaging the blades and seems fine but when I try to drop the blades it is cutting out.

Any idea what could have caused the fuel to dump into the oil? Any other checks I should do to work out why it is cutting out when I try to engage the blades?

It's a 223cc Briggs & Stratton 950 Series ES petrol engine. Thanks.

Snapped blade bolt when using a torque wrench to tighten it

Hi all.

I have a 4-5 year old Troy-Bilt XP mower with a Honda GCV160 engine.

After procrastinating I finally removed the blade for the first time and had it sharpened by a local guy. It came off fine, everything was good.

When I went to reinstall it, I used my 1/2" torque wrench set to 40 ft-lbs of torque and was tightening, and tightening. It felt like it was too tight, then it snapped off. The wrench is rated from 20 to 250 ft-lbs.

The blade was blocked with a piece of wood to keep it from moving, this was the first time the bolt was removed, etc.

I got the broken threaded part out and ordered a replacement bolt. I put it in, and used a 3/8" torque wrench to tighten to 30 to start and again it felt like it was too tight and was going to snap again. I used a regular socket wrench to tighten it up and it seems fine now, but I'd like to properly torque it in. The 3/8" torque wrench is rated 10-100 ft-lbs.

Am I doing something wrong on tightening? I used a scrap piece of 2x4 to block the blade from moving, but I was not doing it against the sharp edge, something I did see in a video online that a trusted small engine repair guy did. I just want to make sure it's on safely and securely and won't fly off when I'm cutting, but is still able to be removed as I want to get the blade sharpened yearly.

Thanks in advance.

Someone near me on FB market place has it listed for $200 "needs wiring work". From my little research, these seem like decent mowers. I haven't gone to look in person yet, but I think it's pretty cool looking and would be fun to mow my yard with.

Are these good mowers? Would it be worth a ~$200 price tag even when it doesn't seem to be running? Any and all advice or knowledge on this would be appreciated!

Best way to clean debris out of fuel tank?

Got a used older toro recycler not too long ago. Runs great. First pull. HOWEVER - there seems to be a lot of debris on the bottom of the fuel tank. It’s got a strainer so I’m not too worried about the carb yet. What’s the most efficient way for getting the gunk and debris out? I tried siphoning but I’m just wasting gas and it’s time consuming

Engine question:

I’m looking into purchasing my first lawn tractor / riding mower. I know to run form Kohler. Wife isn’t keen on me spending the money on something with a Kawasaki engine. Lost faith in Briggs and Stratton some years ago. I only need something around a 36” deck (give or take a few inches).

What is a decent engine and or while machine you’d recommend? TIA

Best bang for my buck

I live on roughly 2 acres in North Central Florida with about 1/2 and acre not cleared (~1.5 quasi maintained) and I recently lost access to the mower I had been using to try to keep up with mowing (Stihl 21" battery walk behind).

We are a single-income household with me working as a public school teacher so I have a small budget and as it is the beginning of the year I have little cash on hand and would have to finance. I am only comfortable going up to ~$3000. (Limited cash on hand has ruled out Craigslist/FB marketplace).

I know that Lowe's and Home Depot are running their Labor Day sales, so was wondering what you all would purchase right now on my budget and property size.

How much abuse can a Toro Recycler with a Kohler engine take? This one is 6 years old, guy hands me whats left of the original bottle of oil(about 1/3 still in it)which he was supposed to empty entirely for the initial fill. Choke valve on the carb was stuck open from the block of dirt/filter. Started on the first pull….
