Spring is finally here, and temperatures will steadily warm up over the coming weeks. As the weather shifts, our lawns will wake up and begin actively growing again. To help you get the most out of your grass this season, here is a list of essential spring lawn care activities:
Soil pH test:
If your soil's pH is outside of the ideal range of 5.5 to 7, your lawn may not be able to absorb nutrients and grow as effectively as it can. If you are concerned that your soil is not performing as it should, it is worth doing a pH test. pH tests are fairly easy to do and are readily available from many local garden centres and hardware stores. If you do need to correct your soil's pH, please check out our pH blog here.
Do I need to aerate my soil?
If your lawn is in a high-traffic area or suffers from compaction, aerating the soil will significantly improve its performance. Aeration increases the flow of air, water, and nutrients to the roots, strengthening them and creating a healthier lawn overall. To aerate, simply take a sturdy garden fork, drive it into the ground, and give it a good wiggle to fracture the surrounding soil. Repeat this process across your lawn.
How often should I mow my lawn in spring?
One of the best things that you can do for your lawn in spring is get into a regular mowing schedule. By doing this, you will help reduce additional stress to your lawn, as well as encourage your lawn to thicken up and better block out lawn weeds.
The amount of times you need to mow will be dependent on the weather and type of grass. However, if you are able to mow frequently enough so that only one third of the leaf is removed with each pass, your lawn will be able to thrive.
Should I fertilise my lawn in spring?
Fertilising in your lawn in spring can help speed up new growth and help establish strong roots for summer. If temperatures are still a bit cool in your area, it will be best to use a liquid fertiliser like Exceed, which will be absorbed my the leaf of the plant. But if temperatures have warmed back up in your area, or if you can wait will a few more weeks for temperatures to warm up, we recommend using a granular fertiliser like Lawn Solutions Premium Fertiliser.
Should I remove weeds from my lawn in spring?
If any lawn weeds have made their way through your lawn over winter, now is an ideal time to treat them, before they have a chance to spread further. To remove them, we recommend using a weed killer like All Purpose Weed Control for tackling any broadleaf weeds like Clover, Bindii & Creeping Oxalis.
