Cycle? No, this is a downwards spiral.

I guess we have been spiraling downwards since 2000 BCE if history is to be trusted

The first two points were valid, but this just proves that the world is always going to look worse when you're actually living through it than with hindsight, and being able to enjoy your best memories.

u/Clean_Current_2018 8d ago
If ever you need proof that people just idealize the time of their youth - look no further than people who were young in the god-awful 90s talking about that decade like it was some great time in history.

u/Round_Bag_4665 8d ago
yup. And when you ask what made it so great, they ALWAYS just talk about kids stuff. You'll never hear someone who was in their 30s for the 90s talk up the 90s.

u/PsychoticSnail33 7d ago
I still like rock music in my 40s, 90s was probably the last time it was everywhere. Kind of miss that at least, all the weird toys and gadgets from then that people get all sad over being gone less so. My tamagotchi kept dying, sorry I don't want it back...

u/relapsedloveaffair 7d ago
this is why i really appreciate the honesty. i love looking back at decades just as much as any other person, but can we please cut the bullshit ?

u/SpaceAlienFemboy 7d ago
I was in a shopping mall recently and overheard some guys maybe around 19-21 or so, and one said "Yeah bro I just really miss 2020 bro it was just like so much more of a vibe back then, like we were just so much more of a community like on TikTok and stuff." They were nostalgic for the days of COVID lockdowns. Like you said, people must idealize their formative years.

It was if you lived in America. Eastern Europe, not so much.
We didn’t have daily shootings.
We could wave our families goodbye in that airport and watch them taxi to the runway if we wanted.
The worst president scandal was him lying about getting some head.
Republicans still cared about others. Don’t believe me? Go look up their values from 1990s. The current state of the party would think that they’re communist.
We didn’t have people willingly giving big brother the keys to their homes.
Kids weren’t getting arrested and being tried as adults for doing dumb kid shit.
Cyber bullying wasn’t a thing because the internet wasn’t in your back pocket.
When you went to college, you could get a job with said degree.
College cost was a summer working at McDonald’s to afford it, with tuition assistance.Controversial take here as a man who grew up in the 90s:
If we had a problem with one another, we’d solve it in the parking lot after school, and probably why we didn’t have school shooters. As a person who spent 2 of the 00s in Iraq, I’d say the 90s was a hell of a lot better time.

Lol. You're talking about the 90s where weird cults would commit mass suicide (Heaven's gate) get into shootouts with law enforcement on the regular (Ruby Ridge and Waco), or release chemical weapons on the subway in Tokyo (1995 Tokyo Subway Sarin gas attack). This was also the decade where mass *bombings* were widespread. This was an era where people were bombing abortion clinics, and high profile bombings like the Unabomber, the Oklahoma City Bombing, or the 1993 WTC bombing tended to occur regularly too.
Not to mention race riots occurred fairly regularly, (Rodney King and the LA Riots for example) and crime was so bad in major cities that movies like Predator 2 actually used it as a plot point. Shit, Giuliani originally got elected mayor of NYC running on a platform of "I used to be a federal prosecutor, so I know how to clean up all the crime in this city". Nowadays a winning mayoral platform in the same city is "let's make groceries and rent cheaper". I dunno about you, but going from "crime is rampant" to "things are too expensive" seems like a hell of an improvement.
You're also ignoring that the Republicans of the 90s were rabid with Rush Limbaugh talking points, and the entire reason the Lewinski scandal was a thing in the first place is that Republicans spent years trying to find *literally anything* to pin on Clinton. If you had been old enough to actually listen to the politics of the time, you'd know there were a lot of insane conspiracy theories Republicans made up about the Clintons at the time, including that bill and Hillary Clinton were having political opponents murdered. Republicans literally made documentaries like "the Clinton Chronicles" (1994) that claimed among other things that Bill Clinton was
- a drug addict
- using Arkansas State Police officers to facilitate sexual liaisons and intimidate accusers
- Misusing funds with the Arkansas Development Finance Authority
- Using Bank of Credit and Commerce International to launder money
- Profiting from drug smuggling at the Mena Airport
- Protecting Barry Seal's drug smuggling activities
- Murdering witnesses to the Mena drug smuggling operation
- Covering up the circumstances surrounding the deaths of two boys found dead on railroad tracks near the airport, Kevin Ives and Don Henry
- Protecting a state medical examiner who was repeatedly accused of misstating the cause of death in several autopsies
- Covering up the cause of the death of Vince Foster
- Using contacts at the Rose Law Firm to shred documents that would have implicated Clinton in scandals
which all turned out to have no evidence behind them.
Also what are you talking about? the practice of charging minors as adults basically began in the 90s. The state of Michigan for example made it law that you can charge a minor as an adult for literally *any* offense....in 1996. In 1999, Nathaniel Abraham became the youngest person ever convicted of a crime and tried as an adult... at age 11.
You just didn't notice any of this because you were a *child* at the time, whose awareness of the world didn't extend beyond school.
your comment "Controversial take here as a man who grew up in the 90s:
If we had a problem with one another, we’d solve it in the parking lot after school, and probably why we didn’t have school shooters." makes this obvious. It's also dead wrong, the modern trend of school shooters *started* in the 90s.. or did you forget about Columbine (which btw was also the deadliest school shooting in US history for 13 years straight)?

He's right tho. The 00s sucked and these are great reasons. That said, who knew how much more annoying the '90s nostalgia would get.

u/ConsumerofToons 8d ago
Some of the militant 90s kids got annoying. But after how bad the 2000s was, you could see why they were so staunchly nostalgic. People should be able to understand more because this decade after 2023, is bad for similar reasons.

I remember in the 2000s MTV already stopped playing music videos and they showed nothing but reality shows. Some people claim that MTV stopped showing music videos because of YouTube but they already stopped by the time YouTube launched in 2005

The 90s circlejerk is eternal. Where are the 80s kids that thought the 90s were lame? Please, I need some variety in my complaining!
5
u/RDAwesome 8d ago
Kung Fury and Far Cry: Blood Dragon and Stranger Things and the reboots of He-Man and Transformers and TMNT and She-Ra and Thundercats were all products of the '80s nostalgia that we're only just casting off in earnest for '90s nostalgia. Everyone gets their turn when they get to make media
4
u/cronenber9 8d ago
Dude we had 80s nostalgia for almost 15 years
2
u/ghostpicnic 8d ago
I don’t want more 80s nostalgia. I just want someone to complain about the 90s the same way 90s kids have been complaining about everything they didn’t grow up with for the past quarter-century.

u/Round_Bag_4665 8d ago edited 8d ago
Fair enough.
How about this: the 90s was basically the peak of crime and was a violent decade filled with riots, shootings, and bombings. In the 90s, you could win a NYC mayoral election running on a platform of "I am a former prosecutor and know how to clean up crime in this city". In the 2020s, a winning platform is "groceries and rent are too expensive". Call me crazy, but I think that's kind of an improvement.
The 90s was the era where everyone and their grandma was bombing everyone else. this was the era of abortion clinic bombings, the Unabomber, the Oklahoma City Bombing, the 1993 WTC bombing, and the Tokyo Sarin Gas Attacks.
Race tensions were extremely high with the Rodney King trial and the LA riots, in America the Republicans were losing their minds that Bill Clinton was actually getting rid of the budget deficit and being fiscally responsible, so they threw tantrums and made bizarre conspiracy theories accusing the Clintons of all sorts of weird shit from murdering their political opponents to money laundering, kicking off a multi year witch hunt that turned up nothing except evidence that Bill had a blowjob from a white house intern once.
The 90s was virulently homophobic to the point even the liberals joined in on it, and pop culture from music to movies to TV was all extremely edgy, dark, and depressing. People were convinced there were predators around every corner to abduct their child. The 90s also gave birth to the modern school shooting issues we have today, and set the seeds for our current political polarization.

The 2010s was mostly a great decade, and I liked 2022-2023. But the 90s nostalgia, while some of the more hardcore 90s kids were annoying about it, was warranted given how bad the 2000s was.

I thought it started about 07, maybe 06. The early 2000s and late 90s were all about the 70s and late 60, and even the 50s when it came to furniture. That whole period was, rather, a reaction to the 'bad taste' of the 80s (well, at least the Memphis postmodern aspect that was so big from the late 80s to the early 90s. "Good taste" was definitely a thing in the early 80s, as a reaction to the bright colors of disco).

I was born in 2002, so anyone who can remember the 90s please correct me if I'm wrong, but honestly they seem to be right? The 90s does seem like it was a much better decade than the 00s.

u/King_Corduroy 8d ago
I mean yeah I remember not liking the 2000's much, the 2010s were better but mostly cause the internet was goofy as hell and youtube really came into it's own which helped promote cool hobbies, games, and indie music (as well as movies! Can't forget Kung Fury). But it is funny that things are probably objectively worse now but the list of complaints for the 2020's fairly similar to that of the 2000s. lol

90-s fucking sucked ass, worst time in our country's modern history. All post-socialist countries were on survival mode in 1990-s.

I forgot at the time people supposedly hated the music. It’s crazy the turn around stuff like girl anthems had and it’s definitely looked on with fondness now.

also if this was 2005, wasn't American Idiot just released like a few months ago?

Some of the best cable tv series ever aired in the aughts including Battlestar Galactica, The Sopranos, The Wire, Rome, and then Game of Thrones started off the 2010s. The music was still mostly rock music for the first half and Tool’s greatest album was released ion 2001.

Grating as some 90s kids could be, especially as this decade after 2023 started sucking for similar reasons to the 2000s, you should especially understand why we were so nostalgic for the 90s.

u/PostMatureBaby 8d ago
2005, we still had a hell of a lot of shit to go.
Also, they complain about Reality TV and CSI clones... Didn't even have Jersey Shore yet
