Libreelec still in developmemt

Laat update was in November 2025. So many vulnerabilities since then. I wonder if it's still developed.

Does anybody knows if a similar alternative exists, one that has more frequent updates?

Last stabil build was november 2025 last nightly build (test build) is only abort 4 hours old

So libraelec is still very much in active development

There was no new official kodi version released since then so no new libreelec version also.

LE is just an OS to launch Kodi so I'm not sure what you are winging about...

Generic-legacy is end of life. You should be looking at migrating to a generic image.

I started using LibreElec many years ago and my goal was to keep my streamers as small and low-power as possible. I started with Rasberry Pi but quickly transitioned to Le Potato boards as they were more stable and worked better. Then, after a few years, I started having all sorts of trouble (in hindsight, maybe this was when CoreElec forked? Or libreelec stopped concentrating on amlogic). Anyway, after troubleshooting and debugging for a while, I ended up giving up and investing in a bunch of cheap n100 boxes. They were (don't think they still are) very price competitive with Pis and Potatoes (if you include their cases) and use the generic Intel LibreElec images. Not only did my stability go through the roof (not sure I have had a single non-self-inflicted issue since this decision), but the n100 can handle 4k streaming with minimal memory. Also, during covid, I was able to sell most of my used PIs and Potatoes for more than I paid for them. I still also run PiHole on my network, but running them on Proxmox on an n100, they are WAY more responsive than on PIs, easier to manage and easier to update as well. I can also spin up as many as I want without buying more hardware and run other VMs as well.

Also curious, why the big concern about vulnerabilities. I mean I can understand for devices exposed to the internet (I do all my streaming locally, maybe you are wanting to expose Kodi to the internet)? For me, any "IoT" devices I am concerned about in terms of security/vulnerability, I put them on their own isolated VLANs without access to parts of my network I care about. If someone breaks in, have fun in my sandbox, if you nuke anything, I'll just re-image and go on my way. Everything on this network I treat as "disposable", for just that reason.

That's exactly what I do as well. I isolate it because I don't trust it from a security standpoint. But it works and it does the job downloading and playing movie torrents on my pi since many years.

Good point about hardware, but I was asking about the OS. Probably after the pi dies or becomes obsolete I'll go the minipc way as well.

Kodi development has slowed down, and I don't believe there are any known/significant security vulnerabilities in the last stable LibreELEC build. It's not uncommon for appliance-like software to get to a point that it only gets major updates once a year or so, even for those connected to the network.

Yep, Coreelec seems to be the current development focus, along with focused forks of Coreelec like P3i which is optimized for the Ugoos AM6B+.

I tried Plex years ago but was really turned off by its insistence to transcode my media. I do not want it transcoding, I just want to play my media as-is. I found Kodi much simpler. Is this still the case? Frankly, part of me wants a minimal UI, 1/2 the reason I curate my own media is not to have to deal with all the forced into videos/commercials on paid-for media. Just give me a directory structure and let me pick what I want to watch. Kodi isn't too in-your-face, has a simple menu structure and pictures. To me, that is a feature, not a problem.

I'm sure if you pointed MythOS or some other vulnerability tool at it, it would find plenty, but I really don't care personally.

The other reason I left the Pi space is all the dead SD cards I have started collecting. I might have killed one SD card (in a camera) prior to Pis, now I have a substantial graveyard. I got sick of re-flashing. Pis (to me), feel like a toy for experimentation, they have their place, but never a serious application. I know SSDs in my n100s also have a designed-in limited lifespan, but, so far, none have gone belly up yet. Installing LibreElec and configuring the way I want is pretty trivial and my Proxmox servers, all the VMs are backed up, so if my SSD dies, all I have to do is slap another one in and install Proxmox (trivial) and then restore my VMs (or just restore my VMs on other servers I have up already).

People have moved on from Kodi. It's clunky UI is not what people are using in 2026.

Recommend getting yourself a shieldtv if you need audio codec support and using something like Plex, Jellyfin, emby or wuplay/stremio https://github.com/wuplayapp/wuplay-releases

Pirates that can't understand that people use Kodi for so much more than shitty pirate stream add-ons. Kodi wasn't even made for those things.
