MEME POST Plus Peak 6.5cm
Anybody else feel like they have been cautiously optimistic to try this stuff and now it can't be found anywhere? I'm thinking it will have similar issues to 7mm backcountry, but I would like to try it in my rifle for myself without buying another gun. I think it will have more use in the hunting space right away, but who knows 20 years from now what we'll be using.
I think I'm more excited to watch more exposure and testing of what reloaders will do with the technology. I know there are threads of people playing with the 7bc cases, but hopefully this will have more people providing real, valuable data due to less barrier to entry. Velocity consistencies, neck tension, quantity of reloads per case, accuracy, load data, etc. Personally, I'm very interested in how necking it up and down will go for people. Eric Cortina has a couple of short videos messing around with it and so far it looks simple enough.

I coudn't imagine them NOT getting this stuff out before the western hunting season kicks off, but here we are.

It seems like a huge mistake to miss that wave of sales. My theory is there is so much military demand that they just have decided to fry bigger fish despite their initial release timeframe. That would explain their lack of marketing all of a sudden. Either that or they hit a snag in a QC issue or supply line they are trying to fix

Well commercial sales are always iffy. You sell to a distributor, and sure you get that cash up front but if it sits on the shelves they aren’t buying more.
.Mil contracts are different in that regard in the fact they instantly secure a multi million dollar pay day, guaranteed X amount of rounds, and guarantied time frame. So ya the focus always goes there because that’s for sure money, regardless of the hype on the civilian market. Very plausible that’s what’s happening

I preordered from midway, expecting delivery in Oct (127 lrx) but the loads that were supposed to be instock last week are overdue.

I'm most excited for the component cases to become available at some point, but out of the factory loads they are going to offer, the lrx load does look sweet because it is the bullet that I think would stand to gain the most from the added velocity over the regular 127gr lrx load with copper bullets struggling more at lower velocities than cup and core bullets.

Same, but I’m not afraid to hunt lrx and then reload my hammers onto the cases. But if I could skip to reloading I would.

I’m looking forward to getting my hands on it. It baffles me that they went out with the marketing so far in advance of launch. Strategically odd.

Hopefully people will take a hard look at _all_ the components on their rifle to make sure it can handle this.

Is there any long term reports of what cramming all this pressure does for throat erosion and barrel burning? I feel like it cant be good.

u/HERBERT_224 1d ago
I have not seen any yet. I’m interested to see the data once people can actually get their hands on it. I don’t think most people are burning out barrels as much as they think they are in general. I’m not too concerned about that personally. I don’t think people realize how long it can take to shoot over 1k rounds if you’re not competing. If you are shooting that much then just use lower pressure ammo. PXT might even change that shortly also

I've been wildcatting sig Fury cases fora hot minute - pretty excited to play with these onceI can get some empty cases.

I wont buy it out of spite for the obnoxious youtube video i saw. Ill take my ammo slow and heavy outta the cheeto the way god intended

I know its not gonna happen but imagine 6.5PRC +Peak. 100gr bullet going at 4000fps

The juice is not worth the squeeze. 200fps does nothing for me other than stoke my ego a bit.

200fps allows me to cut 2-3 inches from my build to accommodate a full suppressor vs a shorty. So...

Just go prc then...

Less recoil with the Creedmoor. My wife and kid don't have to shoot a short barrel magnum if the Creedmoor can do it in a short action. The point is to have a lightweight, shoulder-fire-capable, packable firearm, and the ballistics of the 6.5 bullet are the sweet spot for what and where we're trying to hunt. The +Peak ammunition fits that's profile. 308 and a PRC push a little to either side of that spectrum, so it makes the most sense to hit in the middle with the CM +Peak.

This guy probably doesn't know that gun powder is also mass that is being burned and spit out of the barrel. My 6.5prc load has 15 grains more powder than my creedmoor load, and my creedmoor load is relatively much hotter than the more "mild" PRC load. The new +peak loads will have comparable powder loads to the original cases, with a faster burning powder. Hence less recoil

Your wife and kids can kill anything a 6.5 can with a 223 and not have to fuss with fancy ammo. If recoil is an issue going to a higher pressure round isn't the solution.

u/NetwerkAirer 1d ago
Can kill anything with anything, what's the point of this cartridge then? This is a technology advancement in modern ammunition. I'm going to use it.
And what? I really don't care about the killing potential of a 223, when I have a 6.5 CM firearm already built...?
If I can reach magnum-level velocities out of it, without having to burn magnum-level gunpowder amounts, why the hell wouldn't I do this? Why would I go buy another gun, to shoot smaller rounds, with less energy? Recoil IS an issue, so a higher pressure and LOWER WEIGHT POWDER CHARGE round is the solution. Are you serious?
What point are you trying to make?

We're on the upswing of the magnum wave again. It used to be coke can cases with a phonograph needle on top but now it's "proof load everything". This comes and goes in cycles.
As does the interest in it. Bet.. you'll do it and mostly shelve the idea in favor of standard loads and less recoil, like every other time before.

u/mulyhuntr33 1d ago
There is no point to it. That's my point.
So you're telling me that an increase in pressure and velocity won't create more recoil? Is Newton's Law now irrelevant with Plus Peak?
Enjoy the cartridge while it lasts. Sounds like you really need it and will put it to good use.
2
u/NetwerkAirer 1d ago
Newton's Law absolutely applies. That's why it has less recoil...?

u/mulyhuntr33 1d ago
A bullet at 3000 does not have less recoil than a same weight bullet at 2700
2
u/NetwerkAirer 1d ago
We are comparing a 6.5CM +Peak with a 6.5 PRC, the velocities are very similar.
The recoil IMPULSE of identical weight bullets at "identical" velocities can be different, however. The +Peak cartridge uses less powder, generating less gas ejecta. This is also a pretty big part of that equation. Couple that with both a more efficient powder burn and the ability to use a larger suppressor - that recoil impulse is going to feel even less.
I think you are in the wrong subreddit.

u/HERBERT_224 1d ago
Interesting take. Also it's closer to 300fps faster, so you would really hate it
2
u/Climbforthesoul 1d ago
It’s more than 200 fps. This allows my effective range to be 800 yards on a deer with a 24 inch barrel, and 600ish for elk.
1
u/mulyhuntr33 1d ago
My brass cased 6.5 creedmoor only gets me to 790 on either animal. Darn.
3
u/Climbforthesoul 1d ago
Your tolerance for bullet choice is different than I. I don’t reload though. But even if I did, you ain’t touching the Peak Plus for velocity.
Also, if you’re trying to shoot an elk at 790 yards with a 6.5 creed I question your ethics.

We want +Peak 308 next
