I just watched it(I think you guys will too)

At least twice in the movies, and presumably in the books, waves of cavalry charge headlong into rows of pikemen with braced pikes, spears, and what have you.

How could the first rank of cavalry hope to survive? At the very least you'd think most of the horses would be killed, their riders unhorsed, and then the ranks of cavalry behind them have to leap over the growing carnage.

Yet in the movies the cavalry just rides over and through the infantry (Orc-fantry?) with hardly a bump.

Is this total dramatic license, or historically plausible? Any experts here? Thanks!

Lots of people make jokes about the eagles in the story, as if it's a plot hole. Tolkien explains this, the eagles were actually doing a lot, but I don't believe he mentions what I'm going to suggest.

The eagles were shocked to see the Nazgul on winged beasts, suddenly the enemy could fly and attack them in their domain.

Pretty much, the eagles acted as spies and searchers for the most part, usually at the request of great beings like Gandalf or Galadriel. But at the Battle of the Black Gate, I bet Gwahir and his brother were not going to share the sky with the Nazgul, now that they have appeared on winged beasts. The Nazgul were challenging the eagles domain.

Just a pet theory of mine. :)

Smeagol is my most favorite character so far. The tone has been so light until smeagol murders deagol. I absolutely love how the book potrays this scene even compared to the movie. I love that smeagol is just staring at deagol behind the tree like Michael Myers. Who is your favorite character? And why?

I first read the trilogy when I was 14. That’s several decades to go now :-)

When the movies came out, I did not revisit them because I wanted to experience the movies on their own and not worry about adaptation differences.

Then I loved the movies so much I didn’t want to go back and reread the books because I remembered some sections as painful to slog through… Mostly the songs. But I watch the movies at least once a year, usually several times a year.

This year I decided to read the audiobooks, the Andy Serkis versions of particular, and I must say they are fantastic. Even the long songs come to life in a way that is exciting.

I know I’m missing some of the deft language and setting my own pace, but I think this is gonna become an annual habit to revisit the audiobooks before the annual habit of watching the extended edition movies over Christmas break.

So if, like me, you haven’t revisited the books in a long time, or perhaps not ever, give those audiobooks a try.

Hi all!

I have all of the character art cards they’ve slowly been releasing and love them. I want to put them up but am struggling in choosing a good frame.

I know they’re 5 x 7 so I’m planning on 8 x 10 frames with matting.

I’m thinking of putting up a 3 x 3 grid up of the fellowship.

Has anyone bought these and framed them as well? And if so, what frames did you end up going with?

I was thinking that the events of Snow White take place way before the years of the Shire Reckoning.

Watched the extended cut of the 3 parts over the weekend with my 8yo and 6yo kids.
I've been talking about the story with them in bits and pieces for 3 years now, sometimes as bedtime stories, sometimes when situations came up which warranted narrating appropriate parts of the story.
My 6yo seems to be fascinated by the Lotr, so much so that 10 mins after the last movie ended, he started weeping softly that he feels bad the story ended.
Now I'm more determined than ever to make them read the book. So determined that I've hidden one of the Harry Potter books we've received as a bday present. They touch none of that garbage until they read the ultimate masterpiece.

I have a yearly tradition that on September 1st I start reading The Lord of the Rings. I look forward to this tradition every year as it provides a nice sense of calm and comfort which I feel is appropriate for the welcoming of autumn.

Inspired by HBO's attempt to adapt Harry Potter. Any thoughts?

Was immensely lucky to score this ultra rare model in a charity shop for £20, beyond thrilled with it, but I just want to fix it. To my knowledge there are six breaks, the only one which significantly concerns me is the lack of an eye at the top. I've never attempted any form of model restoration before, so I was hoping you might have some advice on how to fix it. I'm not looking to protect its resale value, just to make it look even nicer than it already does. Photos 8 and 9 are of a random mint copy i found on ebay. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I took this series because, despite having seen alot of clips, i have NEVER seen the movies or read the books so i thought it would be a good opportunity to finally read it
but with the nature of its thickness and all, is it realistic to comprehensively finish the book in 1 and a half weeks?
should i blaze through the audio books alongisde it? if so which one?

The Fallen Maiar that joined Melkor in his Rebellion and becoming of Morgoth, the known Maiar are of course the Five Istari (The Wizards), Eönwë, Ilmarë, Ossë, Uinen, Melian, Arien, Tilion, Salmar, and then the known Fallen, Gothmog, Durin’s Bane, and Five other Balrogs, that’s Twenty Maiar mentioned, but my question is, if ‘Evil Spirits’ ‘Demons’ and such also maybe classified as Maiar, potentially ofc, so the Werewolves, Carcharoth and his Ancestor, Draugluin, Father of the Werewolves, could they possibly be Fallen Maiar as well? Or at least Draugluin as the Werewolf Sire?

Perhaps Draugluin was a Maiar who Rebelled with Morgoth, and after Dying in Battle alongside or sometime after/before Morgoth’s Defeat, maybe even being sacrificed by Sauron himself in some type of Ritual to create the Werewolf, but inevitably his Soul would somehow be transferred into the body of a Wolf, becoming the First of his Kind, Draugluin, the Werewolf Sire.

This is all ofc theory, Prof. Tolkien didn’t seem to write much on the History of the Werewolf but from what I’ve read, Dark and Evil Spirits could possibly be Fallen Maiar, and Tolkien did confirm that these Dark Spirits inhabit them, I’d love to hear others opinions on this, any corrections if I’ve got anything wrong.
