case for new macbook ?

hi, everyone. i recently just went to the apple store and bought a case for my macbook. i believe it’s the mophie slim hardshell case. however, (like every single purchase i’ve made in my life) i started getting negative tik toks on my for you page related to macbook cases and all of them essentially say that a macbook case will ruin the hinges and cause it to overheat. i thought maybe they were talking about cheap amazon cases, but i spent $55 on a case from the apple store, so maybe the case i bought is an exception? im not sure, this is my first macbook ever and my knowledge on it is limited. i got the macbook air 15” m5 for uni and it was really expensive and i just want to take care of it :(

I have a case on my pro m4 pro. Haven’t had an issue.

Pro has fans for cooling. Air and Neo use the bottom case as a heat sink. Lower covers on pros aren’t an issue but they are on the other 2.

I’ve been using cases on my machines for well over a decade. Zero issues. Apple wouldn’t sell these directly from their stores if they damaged their products.

If you like the case, use the case. 👍

Personally, I would get AppleCare+ over a case. I want people to see the laptop and the scratches that come without using a case aren’t noticeable. With that, though, I think Apple doesn’t have a financial incentive to want you to damage your machine; Apple sells those cases for a reason. Was the case from an actual Apple store or an authorized retailer or some other store?

i have apple care+! and yeah, the case was from an actual apple store. i walked in there and bought one.

I think it's rather funny that you want people to see the laptop. I'm the complete opposite, I have a 3m vinyl carbon skin over mine without the Apple logo cut-out because I live in an area with a lot of homeless people. If i'm riding the bus using my laptop, I don't want some crackhead looking at my laptop on the bus and seeing the shiny Apple logo and swiping my laptop.

Apple sells those cases for a reason

They sell them because of consumer demand; they're likely making a 50% to 75% gross profit margin on the accessory (It's just plastic for chrissakes). It's interesting that Apple doesn't make cases themselves; probably because of the liability as cases can trap heat and block passive cooling through the aluminum chassis and extra weight and snap-on tabs put pressure on the display lid and hinge. Meanwhile they're only likely making 35-40% profit margin on a Macbook. The reason that Microcenter sells Macbooks so cheap is to get you into the store, hoping you'll buy high margin accessories with your purchase.

yeah, this is what i ended up doing. i wanted the case to protect against scratches, but i heard cases trap debris and scratch the mac anyway. also, the case wasn’t letting my mac close properly so i took it off. thank you!

Cases are bad if you're into heavy related uses. It could* cause overheating to some.
