You’re not the boss of me now.

I’ve had this argument and the answer is no simply because even cold soups are cooked at some point even if they’re later chilled and that’s not really true for cereal pasteurization aside

Aren't the cereals baked?

Hmmm yeah but like not in the “broth”

I guess if you microwaved cereal it’d be soup

Think I'll just stick to keeping my soups and cereals separate, but thanks for the sickening suggestion!

Grape nuts are a soup then you’re supposed to microwave them before consumption

What about weetabix with hot milk?

The cereal is baked and the milk leaching the flavor and dyes from the cereal

Hey, Vsauce, Michael here!

It's already called cereal. It can't be soup!

“Horses are already called horses, they can’t be mammals” is basically your logic here

It’s both a soup and a salad

But where’s the breadsticks?

Those are optional

If cereal were a soup, wouldn't cereal milk just be broth?

1

u/Jalex2321 1d ago

Yup, under that definition, it would be.

Well done.

It's not, it's not cooked.

Soup definition doesn't consider any solid floating in any liquid. If cereal was a soup, then hot chocolate is a soup, as it has marshmallows added, or root beer float... and so on...

I can imagine Dabney creating something like this: Cube Rule

Well, it's not a salad or a sandwich, so it has to be

A soup is broth, or stock, plus ingredients. Milk is not broth. Therefore, cereal is not soup.

No. All soups are warm to some extent even if cold while cereal is not traditionally heated. You could argue the ocean is more of a soup then cereal

Gazpacho is a cold soup.

1

u/Jalex2321 1d ago

It's a purée, that is served as soup.

Gazpacho isn't cooked, it's a blended paste with very liquid consistency.

Yes, many people classify it as a soup but it doesn't fit the definition of cooked. If you remove that definition then cereal has a case of being considered a soup.
