Local Why do Maldivians refuse to believe that pedestrians have right of way at zebra crossings?

• Upvotes

Why does everyone including HDC and the government refuse to tell the reckless drivers on cycles that they have to stop when they see a pedestrian, whether they feel like it or not.

This is the only country where they tell pedestrians to look both ways, like it's our fault when some selfish neanderthal barbarian on a death scooter cannot follow basic road etiquette and is determined to run us over.

Why are we so special compared to the rest of the world?

With the spate of recent deaths why are we still blaming roads and pedestrians instead of reckless and selfish drivers and blind traffic cops. Signalling at a turn is a lost art in Maldives.

Creating a fine for jaywalking v punishing reckless driving with jail-time (e.g. when mowing over a pedestrian trying to walk across a crossing) perfectly encapsulates everything that is wrong with the government.

https://x.com/hdcmaldives/status/2094337116964893013

an example of government endorsed stupidity. In what civilised country do pedestrians not have right of way? This is the opposite of what they should be saying. Where is the informercial for the wannabe Lewis Hamiltons?

In this HDC's waste of media resources infomercial we see a lady and her child calmly crossing as they should, so the message should be that the reckless drivers should slow down and stop? but that is the opposite of what we are getting.

How many more children will die, how many will be flattened on zebra crossings until the government wakes up and blames reckless drivers?

Who passed that road safety act with the jaywalking fine? You would think that a civil engineer President who studied in a world-class institution would have more progressive thinking. but this is what we get.

Are there pavements to walk on? can we fine the traffic police if they haven't removed vehicles from zebra crossings, and vehicles that have blocked pavements?

Some guy did an Undertaker move on his own sister and the court hit him with a MVR7000 fine

The money goes straight to the government. The victim gets nothing. If someone physically attacks (especially family), the system should at least make the offender pay the victim for pain, trauma, or whatever she went through. Instead the state pockets the fine and that’s it.

Where can I find old Dhivehi books?

I’m looking for older Dhivehi books, especially non-fiction, Maldivian history, culture, folklore, traditions, old customs, biographies, archaeology, language, politics, private collections etc. I want to dig into the older books and writings that document Maldivian history and culture, preferably in Dhivehi. Does anyone know where I can find these? I’d especially appreciate leads to books that are difficult to find or no longer in print.

Had no one to absolutely talk about this, so wanted to share something i did, mostly with gemini help, I had this old Pc Laying around an office pc, and i just had an idea of making it into a home server, called my bahppa and took permission to use it, it was his, so yeah, basically, i flashed an pen drive with ubuntu server optimized os, booted that to the office pc that im making the server, so now basically the office pc doesn’t have windows, its completely ubuntu server optimized operating system, and then i made the server (office pc) be accessible from main pc that i use, and then i wanted to give the whole server an user interface, with easier access so connected that to something called casa os which makes u basically access the server from a website, with ur logins, with a really good interface and an app store, now ur server can do a lot of things like be a netflix,an ad blocker for devices on ur network, CRAZY RIGHT, and in the app store theres this app call crafty controller, an app where you can make minecraft servers, SO WHY NOT RIGHT? made an minecraft server, which was not EASY, so many plugins and tunneling, to run java and bedrock version together, YES UR LOCALLY STORED SHADER PACKS WORKS,

those are the servers if anyone wanna hop in and play feel free to do so!, let me know how it is!

How are we supposed to just keep going like everything is normal?

I honestly don’t know how people are expected to wake up every morning, go to work, pay bills, smile, make plans and just carry on like everything is fine.

The dollar situation alone is exhausting. The MVR keeps losing its value, and for many expats working here, especially doctors, nurses, teachers and people in technical professions, their salaries have effectively shrunk so much that they’re seriously considering leaving for Dubai, Saudi or elsewhere. When you also have to find USD through the black market just to send money home, I can understand why people are asking themselves what the point of staying is.

And honestly, sometimes I feel the same way about my own job. I go to work every day and wonder what I’m actually accomplishing when the purchasing power of what I earn keeps going down anyway. It feels wasteful. Like we’re all running on a treadmill that is slowly speeding up.
Then there’s the state of the country itself.
This week especially has been horrible. Children dying in preventable accidents, people losing their lives, and one awful piece of news after another. You open your phone and there’s another tragedy. Another thing to process. Another reminder that things are not okay.

And then we have our leaders going on live television and, instead of giving people some reassurance or acknowledging how difficult things are, seemingly gaslighting everyone and blaming ordinary people for spending on Temu or blaming resort workers.
How are people supposed to feel after hearing that?
These days have just been… hard.
I don’t even feel angry anymore. I mostly feel numb. There’s only so much bad news, uncertainty, financial pressure and hopelessness that a person can digest before you just shut down.

How does one actually process all of this and then wake up the next morning and move on?
Why are we in such a hurry all the time?
Why are we expected to keep chasing money, working harder, buying things, building careers and planning for the future when so much around us feels like it’s falling apart?
Maybe I’m just having a particularly bleak day. I really hope so.

Hopefully there’s a brighter future ahead for this country, because honestly, we’re going to need it.
For now, I just wish we could slow down for a moment and breathe.

Im subscribed to the limitehneh 40mb package. But this is the speed I get. Every month im paying MVR 850. I contacted support earlier this month, which takes forever to reply. Calling 123 never works either.

Anyways they said restart the router, I did it. Same shit. Never goes over this 20mbps. I tried contacting someone from support again yesterday. Called 123, on the line for 30min, no answer. I texted on the website support, WhatsApp, Messenger... I texted around morning 8, I got a reply from the WhatsApp support... AT 3 AM...

So im tired of contacting Dhiraagui support, I changed my package to a limitehneh 20 Mbps .. guess what. I still get the same speed of 20mbps. And the 20m package is 550+gst.. so why and what have I been paying extra for this whole time??? Like is this the case for anyone else?

(The screenshots are from when it was on the 40m package)

(P. S respectfully I don't wanna hear about SpaceX)

Has anyone tried receiving USD through m-faisaa? Tell me how it can go from there to a bank account.

I feel like the PayPal hype just died down after a few days.
