Competitive/Discussion Would Toon, Kewl Tune, Elfnote or Light & Dark decks (OCG versions) beat the full power Tearlaments deck?

Post image
102 Upvotes

I play against the bot (MDPRO3), and I lose to the Tearlaments deck—winning against it has always been extremely rare in my case. I got easily destroyed even when using a Master-1 Sky Striker deck I am really good at piloting (+perfect hand). I also tried the dominant (latest) HARAM and Toon decks, and I got defeated as well, but I understand I had no strategy playing them because I am totally new to them. Is it how things are or is it just that I have not played optimally against the deck?

Would full power Tearlaments be the tier 0 deck even now?

P.S. I mean Ishizu Tearlaments.

Competitive/Discussion Best-of-3 makes no sense when going first has such a massive advantage

Post image

If going first is this strong, elimination matches need a different format

We’re clearly not fixing the going-first advantage anytime soon, so at the very least I think Konami should change the format for important elimination matches, maybe top 16 onwards, for example.

A normal Bo3 makes very little sense in a game where going first can have something close to a 75% win rate (according to josh). best of 3 format is just criminal at this point tbh

My first thought was a Bo5 with a fixed order like:

P1 first - P1 first - P2 first - P2 first - Game 5
or
P1 first - P2 first - P1 first - P2 first - Game 5

But there’s an obvious problem: Game 5 still comes down to who gets to go first. You're just postponing the same problem until the deciding game.

So I think a fairer system would be based on pairs of games.

Each “round” consists of two games:

Game 1: Player A goes first
Game 2: Player B goes first

If they split those games 1-1, you repeat the pair.

To win the match, you have to win both games in the same pair — basically, you need to win once with the advantage and once without it.

So it could look like:

Pair 1:
A goes first - A wins
B goes first - B wins
1-1, repeat

Pair 2:
A goes first - B wins
B goes first - B wins
B wins the match

Yes, matches could theoretically become longer, but for Top 16 / elimination matches I think competitive integrity matters more than forcing everything into a short Bo3.

There are similar concepts in traditional sports. In tennis, once you reach deuce, winning one point isn't enough, you need to create a two-point advantage to close the game. In volleyball, you also have to win a deciding set by two points. The idea is that when things are tied, one potentially favorable situation shouldn't decide everything.

This system would basically apply the same philosophy here: you don't advance just because you won the coin flip at the right moment. You have to prove you can win from both sides of the going-first advantage.

It wouldn't fix the underlying problem, obviously. Konami still needs to balance going first vs. going second.

But until they do, I think this would be much more competitive than pretending a standard Bo3 is fair when one side of the coin has such a massive advantage.

Competitive/Discussion I’m finally deciding to start learning pendulum and these two decks are the ones that piqued my interest. Which one is better overall, more fun and easier to play and understand?

I don’t really care about the competitiveness of the deck but just overall how fun and engaging they are.

Question/Help Is it possible to build a deck around Nightmare Magician?

if you're wondering "Why do I want that?" Because I like his aesthetic.

It looks like he could go in Azamina/White Forest/Diabell, Chimera, or Hecahands, but I'm not sure which one would be best.

RANT Going second is something else

We all know going second is scuffed but after the recent discussions on the state of the game after the world championship, it REALLY sunk in just how bad it is. These were my afternoon games and I’m not even crying, “Oooh big negate board” (that’s a whole other issue), because if I went first, there’s a chance they wouldn’t get to play either if they didn’t draw enough gas/board breakers. It’s actually crazy.
