Question Version 5
So I've been a fan since 2009, I caught the tail end of the "Version 3 WHEN?" memes. And Version 4.1 got delayed so many times, that became a running joke as well. But I've not seen that for Version 5 at all. And while I don't want to annoy the guys with pestering, I also want to voice there is fan interest.
I get that it's not the most profitable thing they do and they seemed a little unenthusiastic for it on the commentary track for 4, probably because production for version 4 had so many road blocks. But I'm still hoping for it. I feel like they need to put a definitive capper on the story. It would drive me crazy if they had a show that spanned decades they end with a bunch of loose. threads.
What do you think, are we ever gonna see this? Do you think it's even in production at the moment?

I would honestly want another "in 5 minutes" video rather than Version 5.

I feel weird asking for less production value, but if it helps with turnaround... They were putting big Version energy into the Eva videos and I think that burned them out on the series.

I think I see Sequence Erase and Version 4.1 as closure. The one key component in my eyes is that Derrick is far too busy with his film career to stop and spend a ton of time making Version 5.
I would love a Version 5 but I just don't know that it's possible.

My gut feeling is V5 is at least 10 years off. I think you're right, Derrick is in the film world. But I could see after 10 years of that him wanting to "go back to his roots" or something. Maybe it becomes the ultimate M64 finale project or something, or god-forbid, a reunion project.
The question becomes, what would Version 5 in 2036 even be like...
Rocco keeps the mythology straight, and he knows that 4.1 ended on a cliffhanger. I feel like even if it takes quite a long time, he'd still want to resolve things eventually.

Personally I love seeing them working on their own projects more than another version. I am infinitely more interested in derrick's movie. Would be cool to see Mega64 as a kind of incubator for their projects

I dunno man, I’ve loved mega64 since the ign days, but thought 4.1 was kinda lame. did love sequence erase though so maybe there’s hope.

I liked it! For me, the versions have been interesting to me from the indie filmmaking standpoint over story. I don't think they topped Version 3 or Sequence Erase, it wasn't as big a leap in filmmaking as version 3 was to 2. But it had a cool unique DIY aesthetic. I wish they'd closed the loop on the story a little more so it could act as an ending if needed.

If the story ever does continue, I think it would be in much shorter form rather than a huge project like Version 4. The vibe I got from them is that V4 was not the best experience. I'd actually prefer just getting a small continuation of the story each year. Even if it was only a scene or two. I know it wouldn't bring in any money or new viewers, just something fun on the side for fans.

I don’t think they intend to do a Version 5 currently. 4 ended in a place that they could just leave it forever and by the time it came out most of their audience probably weren’t even people who watched the show anyway. We’re still out here for sure, but I’m willing to bet a lot of their audience now are people who just follow the podcast and main channel uploads. The show is kind of a relic of the old days at this point.

Number one thing I want from Mega64 is another big, concentrated project like the Versions. I would love a Version 5 but I'm open to anything a little more involved than the typical one-off skits and friend simulator content.
Knowing how secretive they can be, I honestly wouldn't be surprised if they've been working on something for a while but I'm not gonna hold my breath.

Do you remember years ago they said they wrote a feature length screenplay called "Cosplayerz"? And they were shopping it around? I'm so curious what that was, they only ever talked about it once

The idea that they could adapt Cosplayerz of all things into a feature length story really had my mind reeling after they mentioned that. Hope to see it someday.

We did get a new game in public sketch with the 007 video recently… who knows? I associate those with the versions since they’re games being played on the Mega64 console, but I know that’s not necessarily the rule for why content gets made lol.

Don't need to be a filmmaker to recognize whether something is quality of not. Also it wasn't a film. It was a long youtube video.

I like V4.1 (I enjoyed the narrative stuff they did in the Versions a lot more than the "public game experiments") but I think the most relevant quote here is Simon Pegg when asked about Spaced (a legendary niche sitcom from the turn of the millennium) in 2013.
Whenever we get asked about... another series of Spaced... one of the reasons we're not going to do it is because we couldn't possibly write it with any degree of truth now, because that's not where we are or who we are any more. I always find it's better to write from a perspective of truth.
The reality to me is that who Mega64 are now is not the Mega64 who created the Versions. That's not saying they're less creative (only have to look at the 5 minutes stuff to show that's nonsense), just they simply aren't the people who made it anymore. They're older, in different places in life, and wouldn't ever be able to recreate the moment that caused the creation of the show and any attempt to would be forced.
The show lived and it died, and that's ok.

That's a thoughtful response. It's interesting to listen to the boys' commentary on version 1 through the years, starts proud -> then disdain -> then back to proud and viewing it more as a time capsule of era that no longer exists. It'd be interesting if the show could have evolved and reflected different internet eras as it went, but that's a tall order. I don't know any show really that's ever been able to successfully return after a hiatus. Twin peaks, I guess.

That would have been the call to make before V4.1. But now we have V4.1, and it ended on a cliffhanger. Making a sequel to V4.1, and trying to do it better, should be possible. I agree V1-3 were a product of who the Boyz were at that time, but I'm still interested in what they can make today.

I'm gonna guess it's not actively in production. Rocco, Derrick, & Shawn have had a pretty busy last couple years in terms of their personal aspirations being fulfilled, but a lot of that stuff isn't strictly Mega64 and it has consumed a lot of their time.
