Random guy on the street asked me to back-yard-breed with him.
Happened a while back. I was walking my dog and passed some workers across the street with a dog. One of the workers said hi, nice dog and then asked "is it a male or female?". So I answered "male".
"Ah shame, it's a nice dog. I would've loved for ours to breed but mine's a male too."
The encounter itself wasn't too bad but what infuriates me is that there's someone out there actively looking for bitches to back-yard-breed with. And there'll always be that one person that sees money in those puppies and agrees.
Adopt or shop responsibly and do not randomly try to breed your own dog.
Similar thing happened to me. Was walking my dog and some random dude on a bicycle asked me if my “husky” was a female. I said she is an Alaskan malamute not a husky, she’s also spayed and old. She was around 8 at the time so beyond respectable breeding age also if someone can’t even get the breed of the dog right why the hell would you ask to breed.
I have had several of my own huskies and fostered over 30 through a northern breed specific rescue - and I was asked about breeding my dogs relentlessly. Not just a no because all my dogs were fixed, BUT HELL NO on moral grounds. The last girl I have was also used as a breeder, and she’s super dog reactive.
Not just for a visual standpoint either you breed to better the breed health wise and uphold/better the standards of said breed. Also being able to recognize each breed from other is basic knowledge even from a non breeding standpoint. For example my girl has the woolly coat which is considered undesirable for her breed because of all the extra fur then creates an increase in grooming maintenance. She is also much more larger in both height and weight than the standard husky. The only reason I see people think she’s a husky is because her coat looks similar to a husky. Makes me also think the average person where I live has not seen a proper husky before much less a malamute.
I'm not sure whether I could tell the difference between an Alaskan Malamute and a Husky either to be fair, but I've never seen either one of those in real life.
We stopped at a gas station with our 110-lb Leonberger in the back of the car. Rando says "Wow, that's a big dog!" (we get that a lot) and then follows up with "Do you fight her?"
Yeah that realisation didn't hit me until later. I'm not quite sure what his plan was to be honest. Maybe he just wanted money out of it for "using" his dog?
Careful the cats might be CIA plants and any car could stop to kidnap you. Better barricade your doors and windows and never sleep. It has happened before afterall.

Turns out she loved my cat’s personality/temperament and wanted him to father her grand kittens.
That's what I've told people on the handful of occasions they've approached me when I'm with my female dog. She's from the shelter so she came spayed but I wouldn't want to deal with puppies anyway. She's also fairly inbred and has markers for a couple health issues (her breed is generally healthy) and her DNA isn't really something I'd want reentering the gene pool.

My girl is spayed because I know far too many irresponsible male dog owners who don't train their males. That, and I used to breed dogs and don't want to anymore.
Good to hear. My sister made the mistake of not getting her dog spayed, while she managed to prevent any pregnancies the dog developed pyometra. Survived but the surgeries cost a couple of thousand.

The fact that you were only a teenager makes this so much worse, and it was already pretty gross to begin with! That man knew 100% that was not an acceptable thing to say to a kid! Oof!
I have a gorgeous male Siberian Husky. And I am not being biased, he gets compliments everywhere we go. But, that means we also get asked if we’d be interested in breeding and the answer is always no. Add to the fact, he is currently 5 years old and was neutered at 10 months. We have no interest in being breeders and wanted to make sure there were no accidents. We also recently learned he has a seizure disorder, so I’m glad there is no chance to pass that down.
I can’t even tell you how many puppies I see each month that are being shipped to the northern US to find homes. There are so so many, please spay and neuter your pets everyone
I brought my puppy to work (nursing home, I was off the clock but stopped in on my way by). One of my coworkers kept mentioning when he was old enough, I should send him to her house because she had a couple female chihuahuas that he could get pregnant.
I told her I wasn't interested and my dog was a pet, not for breeding. She brought it up several times until I told her he was fixed.
Oh this reminds me. When we built our cats a catio in the yard, we were eating tea one night and was interrupted by a knock on our front door. Some random guy, a neighbour but not like, next door neighbour wanted to know if our new cat ( a longhaired fluffy tortie&white cat) was still entire, because he had a male cat and wanted to breed kittens.
Already had her neutered 🤷 but very weird moment. Haven't ever seen him since and my cat has been safe (our yard is fully enclosed and the catio within it, plus we have four large dogs) but I kept all my cats indoor for weeks after. They missed a nice summer of catio use but I felt weird about it.
i’m a groomer and i used to work for petsmart. there was a guy with an ugly greasy out of standard intact male cocker spaniel that spotted a cocker spaniel i was handing out and asked if she was intact. regularly told us stories about seeing cockers at the dog park and how it was a shame they were all spayed.
I had this same thing happen. I was walking my Spitz Bilbo and a lady with an aggressive spitz asked to breed hers with mine. I was like hell no even if my dog wasnt neutered
I had a rottweiler for a while and had at least 3 different people stop their car and shout at me when I was walking with him asking if my dog was female and would I breed her.
Um no.
1) he's male and 2) he's got no balls so it wouldn't work out that way either.
I had one guy say something similar when I was on a walk with my foster fail Nyx! I told him she’s a retired mama and will be a spoiled baby for the rest of her life.
(I never bred her, she was picked up pregnant in Louisiana and probably had another litter before that.)
So you're against neutering, is what you mean to say. They were joking, obviously, and I hope you understand that isn't how neutering is performed. Your response is worrying.
This happens constantly with my standard poodle because everyone and their mom wants to spit out some kind of doodle. This is my third standard and im not nice about it anymore. Its a weird thing to ask in general.
I straight up say theyre not titled and therefore not breeding quality. Though a few rude and pushy people have gotten a swift “Ew no” before I walked away which is not the nicest but some people mistake kindness for weakness, and im more than happy to set a hard boundary.
I have an adorable rescue that is a chihuahua and miniature pinscher. In my old apartment complex, a woman approached me asking if I would breed her with their dog.
I was so taken aback that my first thought was “she’s not that kind of girl!” (She’s my baby princess) before I even remembered that she’s spayed.
I adopted a purebred tricolor Amstaff from a local shelter, rare in my area. She was super cute. She had an extremely calm demeanor. She was used for breeding, at least 3 litters by age 2. Her uterus was destroyed. I lived in a lower-income neighborhood and men would stop me often to ask if I would “mate” my dog. I told them that was against my morals.
Dog breeding is forced prostitution. A pimp forces their dog to have sex and give birth just to line their wallet. Get a real job, fucking losers.
This happened to me a few times with standard poodles. And you know there’s people who do it. Poodles are perfect just the way they are. That was always my answer.
If you're a responsible breeder with the relevant qualifications, a good vet, health and behavioural tested dogs, an established line or a mentor helping you to establish a line, and a shitton of money, sure. Breed your dog.
I knew I was going to get down voted but it's the right answer.
The guy might be dodgy as fuck, might not even follow through if OP had been in a position to say yes, but nothing wrong have with having pups if you put the right care and measures in place.
Glad to hear you had a good experience, we've thought about it with ours but still at least 18 months away from her being old enough.
I do believe some breed their dogs without the intention of earning money. You can put just as much love into the mum and pups as any. For me though, other aspects of breeding are important too (health testing, temperature and breed traits for instance). So generally, I'm not a fan of breeding your own dog.
But how would you look for right the male dog?
Because regardless on my opinion of the above, to me it's fucking weird just asking strangers passing by.

I don't see why any person can't arrange health testing and appropriate care of puppies than any breeder. Just because they aren't a professional breeder doesn't mean they are doing it wrong.
I mean, any person could become an ethical breeder. Pretty much all people that breed their pets however, are far from that. And that includes way more than just health testing the parents and caring well for the pups. That's kind of the bare minimum.
I've never heard of a single person who wasn't a professional breeder willing to spend the money to get full health testing done (can be several thousand dollars for hips/patellas, BAER, eyes, IVDD, genetic tests, etc). I don't mean something like embark to determine breed percentage. I mean actual X rays and certification done by vets with an international vet company for hips/elbows/patellas. If the health tests are not kept in the OFA/Pennhip database then you are not running a respectable breeding operation. If you don't do a full genetic panel (minimum of the ones suggested by your country's breed club/official registry) or better you are a BYB.
And it is never ethical to breed cats and dogs unless both parents have had these tests done AND you are educated enough with the breed to know if they would pair well together to create health, mentally stable offspring. BYB is not always about making money, but it is never based on bettering the breed itself.
Yeah. Like I know this will get down voted, but in my books, having a one-off litter with healthy pets is the most ethical way to do it. Both sides need to do their due diligence checking for health concerns and vetting owners, but there's no reason this isn't possible. You have animals who get to spend most of their lives as pets not just being bred over and over.
In a lot of places in the western world, the only pets up for adoption are pit bulls and animals with health problems, and these are simply not appropriate animals for a family in most cases. You can wait years on a waiting list just for puppies or kittens to show up only for them to be adopted before they even reach the newsletter.
OPs story isn't even close to how backyard breeding mills work. Those people just buy two animals and keep using them over and over again. They don't need to look on the street for new partners.

There's a reason why NYS banned buying pets from pet stores this past year. There are far too many animals in shelters/abandoned that need homes to be bringing in any more. They were really trying to avoid the back yard breeding shit because it was causing so many problems and the dogs were suffering and stuff.
There's more than enough animals around that need to be taken care of/adopted that we don't need to keep making more.

Not from random crossbreeds from the street. You need the relevant qualifications, a good vet, dogs that have been properly checked for health and behavioural issues, an established line or a mentor helping you to establish a line, and typically, insane amounts of money. "Hybrid vigour" is a myth. Do not buy from people who deliberately create mutts.
I'm not against breeding dogs. But I do believe there's a "right" and a "wrong" way to do so. Part of doing it "right", is looking at breed traits, temperament, health history and coat type (+ ensuring you have a home for the pups before actually making them). None of which you can do from just a casual glance.
I do not know what you mean by "responsible animals". I've had 7 German Shepards over the years, 2 of them I got from owners who just couldn't take care of them anymore like didn't have space for them. But the other 5 were completely abandoned. All of them were completely healthy until at least 10 years old. There was nothing wrong with their genetics. Only one of them had ay kind of documentation about parentage and he was definitely the dopiest one.
There's an over abundance of animals being abandoned there's no need for making more.
You can even be very picky about what exactly type of dog you want if you just wait a short time and keep an eye on social media from local shelters.
The person would rather injure and abuse his dog than allow them to breed. There's another comment where OP mentions "forgetting" their scissors to cut its balls off.
