there is no other sport equivalent either.

like in the other football. if a guy is running towards you with the ball, do you just jump on the ground and throw up both your hands?

basketball. here comes the guard dribbling right at me, i should just... pat his butt while he goes by and say good job?

man... we looked like our plane had ripped apart over and island that can flip over and might be purgatory but somehow has a washing machine and a whole ass book club on it. #lost

184

u/Skeletor_1984 Jul 07 '26

lol at Lost taking strays.
(I quietly whisper that we’re explicitly told the island is not purgatory and the washing machine and book club were explained, and that saying that the island “skips” is more appropriate then saying “flip” before closing the door behind me)

16

u/unrivaledhumility Jul 07 '26

Okay, do I need to watch this or something? How many cultural references am I really missing out on here?

25

u/CannedShoes Jul 07 '26

Lost is great. Genuinely have no idea how people are saying only the beginning is good. Its later seasons have some of the best moments television has ever seen. The final season certainly has some issues but is still good TV, with a great ending in my opinion. Yes, the ending is controversial, but I think that's only true for people who had ridiculous expectations about what the show's focus would be.

18

u/cjshrader Jul 07 '26

I think the ending is only controversial to people who didn't watch Lost. They all heard something incorrect about the ending and now it's repeated over and over as fact.

i must be misremembering, cause i think i saw a whole island... physically... do the wop!

just floooop and now we're looking at the underside (sorry, spoilers for the 44 year old TV show...)

i need to watch it again. i'm older now and i find myself enjoying things for what they are, not what i want them to be.

(...how can you quietly whisper for that long? that's like a whole book man, i feel like the whisper sound would start to get a little too asmr all close up in my ear like that... maybe make shorter whisper outtros so that people aren't asked to keep reading endlessly on and on as they... ((please tell me you stopped by now))

29

u/Skeletor_1984 Jul 07 '26

Mild misremembering maybe haha.. ok whispering is done, and I’m breaking out the lecture slides.

*spoilers for a long ended show*

at the end of season 4, the island skips in time’ when Ben moves it to get it away from the freighter (to the Oceanic 6, it looks like it just disappears) I’ve heard the island moving being compared to when a record skips, that helps me visualize it I suppose… The island is moving through time all throughout the first half of S5, so for every flash/time jump for the people still on the island, it’s moving to a different spot in the ocean.

And then at the start of S6, the island is shown to be underwater while the plane lands safely at LA-X, but that is because the island doesn’t exist in that reality where the plane landed (and Jack has a son, Sawyer is a cop, etc) that we see throughout s6 because THAT reality is purgatory (not the island, which is a real, magical, magnetic place)

But for me, this took a couple viewings to really understand so I get why people get confused. I have a unique perspective because I did NOT like the finale the first time I watched (as it aired), and then I LOVED it on my second watch and enjoy it more and more with each re-watch. So I understand both sides in a way.

10

u/Disastrous_Cell3406 Jul 07 '26

Came here to understand wtf people are talking about with the world cup. Unexpectedly got a refresher of my all time favorite show. I have The Orchid patch on my work belt and I'm always shocked at how many people know it's from Lost immediately. (Given I work in Television, so it's probably a skewed sample size)

He wanted to play out from the back, but he was a lot further up than normal and all passing angles were covered by Belgium attackers, hesitated. And then panicked, dragged his left foot on the ground by mistake - you can see in the replay he kicked the turf when trying to kick the ball , and that’s all it takes for the Belgium attacker to get the ball out of him.

It shows the quality gap and it’s out of their depth. Just fell apart under the intensity and pressure of a better team.

23

u/Ut_Prosim Jul 07 '26

like in the other football. if a guy is running towards you with the ball, do you just jump on the ground and throw up both your hands?

No, but soft tackles are absolutely a thing. I can't stop this guy, or I am too tired or unmotivated, I'll pretend to try so I don't get yelled at by the coach or booed by the fans. I loosely wrapped my arms around him and then let go, what else do you want from me?

Another symptom is the total lack of secondary effort if something unexpected changes the play. Oh, he dropped the ball, ehhh, someone else will get it, I'll just watch. His teammate got it? Too bad...

You see this pretty commonly with teams that have given up or are afraid. It is exacerbated by increasing score disparities.

I don’t understand how they played so well as a team the whole tournament then against Belgium they decide to act like they’ve never played together before and have zero team chemistry. The only thing I can think of is that their confidence level was near zero for some reason. Their press completely broke down immediately and on offense they could barely make a decent pass and no one was really working to make themselves open. It’s like they were playing with zero energy. Idk what they were doing but I was pissed off and confused the whole game and I’m not even a real soccer fan.

25

u/FriedTreeSap Jul 07 '26

Belgium were also a much tougher opponent which put more pressure on the U.S. and exposed a bit of a skill gap. That doesn’t explain this particular goal which was a pure brain fart, but it does partially explain why the U.S. created almost nothing from open play and the defense buckled every time it was put under pressure.

The U.S. had a lot less room to work with, they weren’t able to easily beat Belgian defenders on the dribble, and they were punished a lot harder for any errant passes or first touches. They weren’t this bad in the first 4 games, but they still made a ton of mistakes they were able to get away with unnoticed because their opponents weren’t good enough to take advantage.

Throw in the fact it was a higher stakes game, and they got off to a slow start, and you could see things start to unravel even further

I'm pretty sure everyone but the US were happy. After trump stepped in for the red card, no one looked favourably on the US team.

165

u/Tropicalfisher Jul 07 '26

Honestly after a stunt like that, I wasn't even that sad to lose

114

u/Drakonnen Jul 07 '26

It was pretty demoralizing because it felt like one of the worst days and games in US Soccer history I had seen, and so I felt disappointed for the program and the future.

Trump should never have done that and once he did US Soccer should've stepped up and said we dont need special treatment, we aren't going to play him and he will serve the red card, regardless of if we think it was deserved.

Win or lose I think the team would've earned world respect for fair play.

15

u/These-Angle-1476 Jul 07 '26

We went from possibly playing extra hard with a chip on our shoulder, to being the team that got special treatment. I don't know how much shit like that affects the mental state of professional athletes, but it certainly makes for a good story.

32

u/Opus_723 Jul 07 '26

If they had just rescinded the red card I wouldn't have thought much about it—whatever, bad calls happen, stuff gets overruled, Trump is loud at the same time as usual, shit happens.

But keeping the red card and just moving the suspension so he could play feels... slimy.

This is where I am. I would have liked to see the US win, of course; I didn't root for them to lose. But the fact that they did lose didn't make me as upset as it would have before the whole fiasco.

16

u/crow_road Jul 07 '26

Honestly if there was any integrity within the team the coach would have dropped him from the team anyway. Could have won worldwide support just by doing that.

9

u/PicoDeBayou Jul 07 '26

That’s my thought as well. I think the player who got the red card should’ve bowed out. Especially since they didn’t overturn the red card, just some stupid suspension of consequence.

Yeah, it's wild. I was rooting for us to do as well as possible but after Trump's shit, I lost all interest. It felt tainted in the most obvious way.

I wouldn't expect any team to do this, but it would've been cool if the team held Balogun out anyway. Again, totally unrealistic for both the player and the team to do that, but from a "Sports only mean what we make them mean" perspective, it would've been cool.

3 of the 4 goals against the US were completely avoidable, if we're being honest. It's like that team had never played a game together before.

1.3k

u/catchy_phrase76 Jul 07 '26

Exactly what I thought watching.

Passing not connecting, bump and runs intercepted, they had no idea where each other would be.

Was like a pickup team playing for the first time together.

551

u/troycerapops Jul 07 '26

they had no idea where each other would be

This was the biggest through line for me all night.

Honestly, this whole game and its halo is such a beautifully perfect metaphor for today's America.

158

u/thewilldog Jul 07 '26 edited Jul 07 '26

What made this team so exciting in the group stage were their fast starts, cohesive passing, and disciplined defense.

Last night, all that went out the window and they reverted back to the level of team play we saw in the last four WCs (that we qualified for).

104

u/Raurth Jul 07 '26

Yes, weak teams will look better when they're playing against weaker teams. The USA got a god draw group, 6 games in the same timezone, with home advantage, and got turned out for tricks by the first team they played with any pedigree on the world stage.

55

u/veringo Jul 07 '26

Yeah, it was immediately obvious the Belgian players were not afraid of the US ability to handle the ball in traffic, and the US players showed no ability to do so either.

Nothing was open because Belgium is just a much better team.

15

u/kdlangequalsgoddess Jul 08 '26

And Lukaku was on the bench for most of the game, while KDB never came off it. Belgium still had gas in the tank that they never used.

Turns out punting on your goalie isn't a winning strategy.

87

u/gerbilshower Jul 07 '26

i mean the first two were entirely on Tim Ream and the back line. only goalie stopping those is a literal brick wall.

yea, that fuck up on the 3rd goal was historically gross by Freese. but hey, Ream was there to backstop that one too and missed. lol.

12

u/No-Market9917 Jul 07 '26

A good goalie comes out and puts his fist right through that cross on the second goal, even the first goal could’ve been stopped by getting a bad on the cross. Freece let every ball run across him and gave them a wide open net on the far post. Back line sucked but that was some of the worst goal keeping I’ve ever seen.

14

u/socksonat3am Jul 07 '26

And at that point too it's honestly better strategically to take a card and block it illegally if you have to. At least then you get your goalie back in his box.

18

u/biz_student Jul 07 '26

That would get a red card. Playing down a man would have equally crushed any chance we had to win.

The TSN (Canada) commentators were wincing in sympathy the whole time. A lot of comments like "It's the kind of mistake you wouldn't want to make at the World Cup with everyone watching. That has to hurt."

573

u/ParkingAnxious2811 Jul 07 '26

I don't think that was sympathy...

673

u/MacGreigor Jul 07 '26

It wasn't. Post-game the Canadians called out US Media stating "They're putting their players in the top 20 of the World, and that's just not true, it's not even close."

409

u/GiraffesAndGin Jul 07 '26

Good. I'm sick and tired of seeing all the lies about how the US has world-class talent and is on the verge of breaking through. If any of them actually watched the sport more often than one month every four years, we could have a much more honest conversation about this generation of supremely disappointing players.

185

u/Impossible-Bat-4246 Jul 07 '26

USA would still say they're the best regardless of what reality is.

u/EkaL25 Jul 07 '26

Having lived in the US my whole life and followed the game off and on I can say without reservation that the bulk of people in my position here think “come on now stop pulling my leg we are still in it?!”.

We all know where we are in the pecking order on this one and it is one of the reasons it has not taken off. Couple more rotations and a valid fielding of a strong team and the tide will turn on US attendance. Hell, just one extremely charismatic great player on the world stage would do wonders. A Clark or Jordan level talent with a penchant for the camera would knit us up right and proper.

there is literally an official ranking of national teams from FIFA: https://inside.fifa.com/fifa-world-ranking/men. Each team receives a score for winning/losing against other teams. US is ranked #16 right now. Team USA is objectively top 20 just based on performance data. That said, (1) the gap between a #16 team and #8 team (Belgium) is usually quite significant and being a top 20 team guarantees nothing at a World Cup; (2) even top teams can have bad games - look at Brazil (kicked out by Norway), Germany (kicked out by Paraguay) and Italy that never made it to the World Cup

41

u/Eriksennnnn Jul 07 '26

I think what the guy meant is that some Americans are ranking specific players in the top 20. USA have some genuinely great players (eg Pulisic, McKennie, Robinson) but none even close to top 20 in the world. USA are for sure a top 20 team in the world but nowhere near top 10, this tournament they only managed to beat the teams they were meant to beat and lose to the teams they were meant to lose to

6

u/ohreallynameonesong Jul 07 '26

Would you do me the great kindness of explaining something? I don't understand soccer. I can tell by watching this it was bad but what exactly is going on here? Why was the goals so far out of the box and what was he trying to do?

18

u/PurpleV93 Jul 07 '26

The goalkeeper being so far out is not a bad thing by default, Manuel Neuer (who was the world's best keeper a decade ago) did this regularly. Being so aggressive in defending can throw off the attackers and stop their push before they run clear of the last defender.

However, this is obviously extremely risky, because the goalkeeper is not allowed to use his arms/ hands when outside of the large 16m box. By the rules, he becomes a regular player at that point. So the last thing you want to do in that scenario is to accidentally kick into the grass, instead of hitting the ball. He lost the ball to the opponents, left his goal empty and, due to his position, he had no right to use his hands to defend.
Had the US goalkeeper simply hit the ball away after rushing out and getting the ball (which he did manage to do), then this would've been a genuinely great defending moment.

In Las Vegas terms, he went all in, fumbled, lost everything and made himself look like a clown in that moment.

Nobody knows, probably not even the goalkeeper himself. That's the problem. It's such an utterly bizarre move from a GK, I have no fucking idea what he was hoping to accomplish here. This was a genuinely "I have never played football before"-level mistake. At the World Cup. At Home. I'm just flabbergasted.

Our performance this game was shockingly bad all around, but this was the nail in the coffin. The whole team knew they were toast once this happened. No coming back from that.

The first foal was pretty bad too. They had chances to clear it and didn't. Just opened the game playing very timid. After keeping the ball in around the box, eventually a n attempted header clear goes mostly straight up, 3 US defenders in the area and they all back off, I guess staying with their mark more than attacking the ball that was dropping into the edge of the box. Belgium gets a good first touch attacking the ball that f should never fall to his feet there and sets up an easy tap in basically.

I said that's unfair. A lot of people say it's unfair. I didn't know you can do it, but it's unfair. So I called FIFA, terrific organization, best there is. I call FIFA and I tell them they need to take look at it. Maybe something can be done I don't know. Maybe the second amendment people can do something.

Why was the goalkeeper so far??

787

u/Whitedancingrockstar Jul 07 '26

Because that's what you do as a goalkeeper when your three defenders utterly fail to stop one attacker. The GK did everything right up until when he hit the ground with his foot while trying to kick the ball... One even wonders how the last defender after the ball is kicked towards the goal doesn't manage to save it. Three spectacular fails in a row really.

118

u/TheFeathersStorm Jul 07 '26

I missed it the first time when it happened but yeah it looks like he clips the ground with his foot rather than "hesitating" which some had said on the original post. It sucks but it literally happens to every soccer player that's ever played lol

The defense was outplayed once again and Belgium would have gotten an open shot on the goal if the keeper didn't run out.

He fucked up the execution with his fake shot. He just needed to clear the ball out of there, even if that gave Belgium control of the ball. Get the situation reset with the defense in position.

145

u/EchoFrequency Jul 07 '26

Don´t forget to mention, that the goalie kicked the ground instead of the ball first.

41

u/raaneholmg Jul 07 '26

I gave him the benefit of the doubt and called it a fake

42

u/QuietShipper Jul 07 '26

My only issue with calling it a fake is that was perhaps the worst moment to fake a kick, considering the goalie was away out of the box with a defender 2 feet behind him.

49

Because a long through ball was played he actually got to it first and made a first good move. Then he stopped his clearance kick for some reason, panicked and tried passing it to his left. Well unfortunately the first player he passed deflected it to the other player where that happened.

Agreed. If this goal didn't happen, we'd have only been beaten 3-1. A two goal differential is typically considered an "ass whooping". A 3 goal differential changes it to "having your ass handed to you".

We looked absolutely terrible last night.

70

u/aHOMELESSkrill Jul 07 '26 edited Jul 07 '26

Well it would have been 2-1 for longer, this late in the game scoring one goal to tie is much less soul crushing than being down 2 goals.

Not saying the US would have won if this didn’t happen but hope would have been higher

It’s pretty crazy watching MLS vs something like Premier league or other top tier European soccer/football leagues. The players are significantly faster with everything, running passing shooting. Even though the Americans and Canadians look like they’re giving it their all the players from the higher tiers are just on another level. (I’m Canadian and I wish it were different)

Reminder that anything the orange man touches or puts his name on turns to poo. Look at what happened when he showed up to Game 3 of the NBA Finals. Knicks lost.

Also in general we shouldn’t be meddling with the decision making of an international sport. It lacks class and integrity.

Team USA looked bad out there in general. The Belgian team was bigger, stronger, faster, and more reactive than our players too. This is what happens when you don’t invest in youth sports on national scale and leave it in the hands of capitalism, nepotism, and privileged access.

63

I say this as a U.S. supporter. At least, now, we can’t fall back on the “things would have been completely different if we had our best player” excuse. Belgium can move on knowing they dominated even with the best the U.S. team could field. No one can begrudge Belgium for overtly asserting their dominance in this situation. Solid performance Belgium, good luck. 👍🏻
