I ordered a pop nonfiction book from Amazon and I received 17 page booklet that was just a review of the book I attempted to order with the original book cover. It was the same price as the actual book, like what do you think you're doing buddy? I returned and got the actual book, and 6 years later still haven't read it.

With how crazy busy I am all the time I don't even have time for The Cliffs Notes version. (It's actually supposed to have the "s" on the end of Cliff - I got grammar Nazied over this for not remembering the exact name 25 years later, so I share the info. I swear it's like sherbet with people pronouncing it "sherbert," and we all pronounce those yellow checkerboard booklets as the singular Cliff.)
I need the Post It version. Whatever fits on a standard Post It. Ironically, when I write back comments on Reddit they end up being the size of a book like Crime and Punishment and I end up needing to cut 95% of my ramblings. Like what I'm doing now.
Ooh, random thought. They need to make shortened book versions under a brand name "TLDR". Ok if anyone steals my idea, I want 10% of the profit.

I ordered some earrings off of Amazon that on the photographs looked like it was a 3D object that was attached to the earring hook. When they came in all it was was a piece of paper that somebody put an earring hook and attached to. Thankfully I was able to return them and get my money back since I can just photocopy or print a picture of my own and then just stick earring hooks on from a craft store. The freaking thing wasn't even laminated like I've seen with some of these. It was literally just plain paper that you could rip in half.

Oh I've done that with another non fiction book by accident and I learned my lesson to scroll down and see exactly how many pages have been claimed to be in the book. They even made the cover identical to the cover of the real book. But also like you I end up buying books and then keep putting off reading them so really I should keep things that are basically the Cliff's notes version since I know I'm not going to get around to reading the stack of books that I have.
My library has a digital catalog and almost every nonfiction book that you look up is basically that, a little mini brief that's like 20 pages long if you're lucky on the book that's supposed to be 600 pages long.

the hard cover pub date is Sept 01. The paperback is not scheduled until June 08, 2027.
I've seen this before and I honestly don't understand what people are ordering to get this bamboozled. Would you be willing to post the listing of this book on Amazon and I could break down what to look for so nobody gets bamboozled again? I work at a book wholesaler and often have to break down the Amazon listings for librarians so they don't bet bamboozled.

Many books released in hardcover have a simultaneous export trade paperback meant for Australia, New Zealand, and continental Europe. Sometimes a seller gets their hands on those.

And Spanish editions of hardcovers as well. you have no idea how many times libraries will order the paperback edition of a brand new hardcover thinking they're saving a few dollars. And then I have to email them and ask them if they really wanted to order the Spanish book with the Spanish title on the cover and the description in Spanish?
Inevitably, they do not. I have had several librarians actually say "Oh i didn't realize it would be in Spanish just because it had the Spanish title on it". Like seriously??→ More replies (1)15

I can find preorders for English paperbacks in both of my country's large online bookstores. They're not gonna come out until the 8th of September, whereas the hardcovers will come out on the 1st of September, but they are there.
Book isn't supposed to come out until tomorrow, but obtaining a book a week or so before it's release is not unheard off.

If you're not in the UK or the US, then you'll likely get trade paperback copies, which are the larger format paperpacks for markets where hardbacks have a limited buyer pool or they have different release rights.
Trade paperbacks are the size you'll often see for new releases in airports, as an example. People don't buy hardbacks at airports as they're bad to travel with, but they are a captive audience for new releases. So trade format is not a regular paperback release, it's one used in specific markets.
When I lived in Cyprus, English-language new releases were always out in trade paperback format at the same time as they were out in hardback in other countries. Then, when the hardback release schedule was over, then they were released in the regular B Format paperback size we're more used to.

This works through people scanning the best selling lists, making a cover and title that matches a, pu best seller, publishes with Amazons printing house, then sells it.
The whole idea is for people who heard of a popular book, search it on Amazon, and think "yeah, looks like what I heard/saw earlier" and buys it.
I bet it mentions something along the lines of "all of this content is from public or freely available sources" so they don't get sued for direct copyright infringement

You can self publish alsmost anything on amazon. They only only check for formating, index and layout.
I published a book I thought that would NOT go through, but they alloed it.
It is about 80 Pages worth of "This tweet is from a suspended account" screenshots.
The title is "His greatest Tweets" I love the bad reviews for it :D

I'm not sure about outside the US, but Bookshop.org allows a brick-and-mortar local/independent bookstore of your choosing to receive credit for when you order online from them. Then you get the convenience of ordering to your door and the satisfaction of helping a smaller business. They claim 80% of their profit margins go to independent stores.

Many of those bookstores and libraries just order it from Amazon. My SO was a librarian in charge of collections at a university and Amazon was their largest vendor for physical books.

The Amazon prices for business and institutional accounts are similar cheaper than most of the national vendors. Particularly for a book store, being able to get an order to a customer now and capturing the sale is usually better than telling people it will take two weeks and having them just order it online.

It's most visible right now on releases from popular authors, but every now and then you can find this sort of thing even on some random low-profile book that got a release announcement for whatever reason. It takes basically zero time for them to generate the Amazon listing and run off a copy of these scam books.
A similar scam involves creating very similar fake books post-release to try to attract purchases. Slight changes in title formatting or respellings of the "author". Some books have had dozens of these parasitic entries created.
Since Amazon seems absolutely committed to not giving a shit or taking any action that might crack down on the practice, the scammers are incentivized to hit literally any book. AI can essentially automate the scam process, too, so this is going to get worse.

One of my novels has Lorem Ipsum text as part of the blurb and I had to argue with Amazon support to get them to approve it as it was flagged automatically. For a whole book of it to be approved is very odd.
