Of course Ford and Chevy will have a panic attack over it, trying to justify some kind of reason why you can't use anything but their slop.

That's the excuse they give, to justify keeping these devices controlled by the original car manufacturer because "the car might behave differently and that's uNsAfE" but really what they want is the advertising and tracking and other crap.
Jailbreak the thing and figure out what it needs to say to certain systems and you're done.
At that point it's just a matter of implementation.

Yup, you can have aftermarket units that do work with those "extraneous controls". Granted it's gotten harder with how much more stuff they handle these days, but it's still doable.
Main trouble is you're left relying on whatever some random app developer or somebody working for a radio company has conjured up for those functions, which may or may not be as good as what came with the car. Sometimes it's alright, and even beats the OEM software, but other times it's just really janky.

Your car is many computers networked together. The one rendering things to the screen is not typically in charge of much more than display/media, but its entirely possible that other parts of the car are designed to treat its absence as a critical malfunction.
You'll usually have a ECU under the hood that has more claim to being the "brain" in that it runs the power train.

I’ll say this again: we’re very close to loud, flashy, distracting ads that play while you’re driving.
There’s absolutely no regulation stopping a carmaker from doing this, other than that the ad can’t obstruct a safety-critical feature or control.

Dude, I appreciate you saying this because this is becoming an increasingly common problem. People keep on expanding the definition of words that have historically had very serious and grave connotations and that makes their impact weaker. Most times because the words technically applies to the situation but it almost seems disrespectful to use it there.
Very random pull, but a recent example I can think of is this Instagram post I saw of fan-made (?) Fortnite skins featuring the main characters from Obsession. In the movie, the main character, Bear, makes a wish that the girl he likes, Nikki, will "love him more than anyone in the world." The wish ends up coming true and her autonomy is effectively taken away. The post had dozens of comments with thousands of likes saying that, if this was real, Fortnite would essentially be "promoting rape culture" and that anyone who bought the Bear skin is a future offender. I'm not trying to start any fights or heated debates, but I think from an objective standpoint, it is extreme to compare a fictional movie where magic wishes exist to real life where people have actually been victimized and violated. Even if it technically applies.
Of course, if anyone would like to throw in their two cents to maybe point out something I am missing, I would like to hear what you have to say. I hope we can keep things civil.

You will have to explain why
the government PERMITS this giant honking tablet in the middle of the dashboard and tells you it is safe to use it and it is not considered distracted driving. Cars are becoming smartphones with wheels.
VERSUS
the government PROHIBITS using your smartphone because it tells you it is "distracted driving" and dangerous.
That is messed up lawmaking - and always a sign of someone bribing (via campaign contributions, same thing) the right people to make it happen.
That is corruption.

Mines rear wiper and hatch was so f'ed it was a $500+ fix for a teardown and rebuild of the hatch, and if a car comes with a rear wiper, you cant leave it broken. Whoever put shiny sunlight reflecting all over the wheel and dash was a dick. Also the heat shield corroded out, fell off and hit a schoolbus so theres that too. Couldnt get Chevy to stop spamming me ads too...even after calling corporate and dealer. Never again.
(Mine ultimately died from being flipped tho lol)
Edit: and the stock tires were like hockey pucks on ice levels of unsafe

Mine had the camshaft snap in two on it, I had it towed to the dealership and they informed me I was 4th in line, all for the same problem. And it burns 1 quart of oil every 1k miles.

Mine has a "Safety Pause" it will do after I touch the screen too many times while not in Park. Even sitting at a stoplight selecting a new song on spotify it was interupt me for 10 seconds to safety pause

Many drivers assume these "lawyer screens" are a federal requirement, they are actually implemented voluntarily by automakers' legal departments to shield the manufacturer from liability and to satisfy broader safety recommendations. Blame the lawyers as usual.

I agree and don't use it myself while driving, but it was mildly infuriating that my wife was in the passenger seat right to use it and then doing this. I get it doing this for drivers, but passenger seat belt sign goes off, why can't it bypass this.

If someone text me while im driving, it shows the popup. It will let me hit listen, and then read it out to me.
But if I hit reply, which when Im stopped it activates the voice command function, it says "this function has been disabled while driving."
Seriously.
Thats how you ENCOURAGE texting while driving, by taking away the one feature that actually helps to stop it.
Hell I cant even use gemini to do it because I have to pull out my phone, and unlock it before it'll function. And ive had that disabled for only God knows how long.

Tried to change some setting recently in a fairly new car as the passenger. Had to confirm I'm not the driver every 5-10 seconds before I could even make a single input, before being completely locked out with the system becoming unresponsive.
Just let me confirm once then shut the fuck up.

We had this issue with a rental at the start of the month. Turned out the camera couldn’t recognise her frameless glasses, so she couldn’t drive unless it was dark or she was wearing her sunglasses without being pinged every five seconds. Drove us up the wall.

I do all that stuff before ignition, the only thing between turning the key and going for me is handbrake and mirror check, 0.4s. I don't like starting first and then doing everything because other cars see your lights go on and get weird. Some people randomly stop even without blinkers or light on. So I'd rather get all ready then do my exit checks

What’s funny is your manual for the Panda specifically says to do all of that BEFORE starting the engine so you are correct, there really isn’t any reason to sit around for 30 seconds at all. And, the manual does not recommend you warm up/idle the engine at startup.
You are doing no damage lol this guy just thinks cars are the same as they were in 1970 and won’t get over it.

It always impresses me when people refute what is sound advice and logic in protecting their own equipment.
just because you CAN doesnt mean you SHOULD. you SHOULD always wait for the engine to complete its startup sequence, the tach will go up, stay higher for 10-30 seconds then drop down to its normal idle speed, this allows the oil to get to full pressure and the lifters to be correctly protected. You CAN just jam off, but you are adding wear for the sake of being dumb.
Its not that it cant just go, its that you shouldnt just go. Understand one is protecting your investment, the other is not caring that you are adding extra wear.

Mine does a "safety pause" if you give it too many inputs too fast. Which the phone doesnt enforce. But thats fine because both the Waze app and Sirius apps basically require phone use to properly interact with. Sure is a lot safer than just having that large touchscreen on my dash do what i need it to i guess.

On my van, if I go too long without vision the dealership, it also takes over the main display where I’m supposed to see my speed.
I have to click through menus using the steering wheel - while driving - in order to clear it. And it comes back on a timer.
That shit should be illegal just based on safety

I rented a Haval Jolian(Chinese car) in Australia recently. It was crazy with all these chimes and warnings and stuff. It had a "distracted monitoring camera" or whatever but it didn't seem to work consistently. Sometimes I'd look over for a half a second talking to my gf and it would freak out at me but then when I'd test it on purpose it wouldn't set off. Maddening. The funny thing is she was getting more annoyed than me lol

Welcome to the era of stupid fucking pop ups. On Subarus it is some sort of agreement to obey laws every time you start the car. Like, duh. What purpose do the people who add that pop up think it actually serves? And, yes, I can dismiss it, and it can go away. But it's just another thing to consume another ounce of my energy. It... just shouldn't be there. Pop ups I never ask for and are not essential for device function or my safety should not be there. Whether that be PCs, mobile devices, cars, anything... If I bought the device, and you are not trying to keep me from frying my device or prevent an injury, don't show me a stupid fucking pop up. End of story.
