It turns puzzles like this into chance but most days it turns it into a more difficult challenge than just guessing "early sound thick" and then just inputting whatever the answer has to be. Not a lot of skill in that one.

Fair point, can't have 99% of puzzles solvable by algorith. That's where smart puzzle design should be part of it. Any word where the number of possible "last letter" guesses is greater than the total number of chances should be an invalid word.

It would be different if, rather than giving limited chances and tracking a "streak", it based your score on something like "average number of attempts"

I mean I would imagine that the challenge would be to then try to find words that include —in this case— S, H, B, W, H, and M; or at least as many as possible in the same word.

For example, if you guessed “Pound” on step 2 and learned that OUND is correct, the next word should be something like “BLUSH”. Then you would learn the word does not contain B, S, L (irrelevant), or H, eliminating several

Mate, they literally explained why you can't do that on hard mode, which was the thing I was asking about. You MUST retain all green letters in their spaces for subsequent guesses, meaning OP was essentially trapped.
