I debated between the two on the sixth chance and chose poorly…

this is why I don't like hard mode. .when you get stuck in this loop it's just luck, not skill.
67
u/twoducksinatub 1h ago
wordle creators could also just not use words that have 15 different options with a given 4 letter combo.

Honestly, it's fun to see sometimes. Like how their crossword sometimes has a really obscure word or phrase, but it's necessary because it makes the crossword look cool, or something, like this:

u/door_of_doom 59m ago
when you get stuck in this loop it's just luck, not skill.
Which is exactly why the skill is in avoiding getting stuck in this loop, which is something that you do have control over. Long streaks in hard mode mean being able to recognize these kinds of possible guesses and specifically avoiding them until you are ready to. OP was not obligated to lock in "sound" as a 2nd guess when there are 8 different words that end in "-ound," and thus they put themselves in this trap.
→ More replies (6)28
u/cuauhtemochaccino 1h ago
Conversely, the skill is in not choosing a word that may get you stuck in a loop, especially so soon.

Just to clarify, I am a hard mode player.
•
u/Not_athrowaweigh 57m ago
What is hard mode?
•
u/Adept-Painting-543 54m ago edited 39m ago
You have to follow the hints. You can't use a letter if it has been ruled out or it's position has been ruled out. Ie no sacrificial guesses which are garenteed fo be wrong but give you more information
Edit: it has been pointed out you can use letters which have been ruled out, you just have to use letters which have a confirmed presence or position
•
u/Beor_The_Old 50m ago
That’s just an unoptimized way of playing. Turns it into a game of chance.
•
u/ThatGuyFromSpyKids3D 29m ago
Well, OPs second guess wasn't good for hard mode. They walked into the loop instead of looking for other guesses that could narrow down more uncommon letters.
Other loop traps to avoid when playing hard mode are
_ight _atch Sha_e S_ore _ower _aste
You avoid guessing words early on with this trap until you have narrowed down the consonants more.
•
•
u/Alt0173 49m ago
That's why it's harder.
•
u/Beor_The_Old 48m ago
It just turns words with many rhymes into guessing, it’s not ‘harder’ to guess the correct first letter here.
→ More replies (3)•
u/Outlook93 17m ago
Kinda seems like it's harder but by limiting your ability to problem solve. Poor design. Increased difficulty should increase complexity not randomness
•
u/zelnar59 37m ago
Playing on regular mode means you basically can never lose, so pick your poison: a tougher game where sometimes you have to guess, or a game that isn't a challenge
•
u/Advanced_Double_42 5m ago
Just limit yourself to less guesses then.
You have to get it in 4 for it to count as a win or something. Hard mode isn't any harder, you just are more skillful to play, just more likely to lose.

the amount of people that either dont understand or dont know what hard mode is astounds me. i too fell victim to this word
33
u/BruceBoyde 4h ago
I fell off the wordle thing long ago; how does it work? Are you forced to retain the greens for each subsequent guess?
49
u/uncreative06 4h ago
if you get a yellow, it has to be used in your next guess. Greens have the same rule except they have to be in the same spot. so once you have a green, every subsequent guess will have that letter in that spot
33
26
u/KamikazeJohnson 3h ago
That's a horrible design concept. It turns puzzles like this one into a game of chance, not skill, as there's no way to deduce the correct answer. Hard Mode should be about skill.
19
u/Duskwatcher1 2h ago
The skill then becomes avoiding words that have common letter groupings. You avoid words like 'Sound' because there are quite a few 5-letter words that end in '-ound', more than you have guesses. Bound, found, Hound, Mound, Pound, Round, Sound and Wound is already 8 for example. At least early on.
You instead go for words that have more awkward groupings of letters that aren't as commonly found in the (Worlde) Dictionary. Let's say 'Bonus' as a word, there isn't any want to get locked with 4 letters with that word.
So Hard mode goes from just guessing words that can fit and find letters, to avoiding words that can get you trapped too early.
3
u/ekoth 2h ago
It turns puzzles like this into chance but most days it turns it into a more difficult challenge than just guessing "early sound thick" and then just inputting whatever the answer has to be. Not a lot of skill in that one.

I think the only way to avoid this trap if you suspect it is an OUND word is to not guess the D right away. Use that slot to guess other consonants.

u/JeffersonTowncar 1h ago
Your guesses still have to be actual words though.
•
u/door_of_doom 54m ago
Right, but you can usually make it work.
In this example, the best progression for guaranteed soccess would have looked something like:
OAKEN
SHORN
BLOWN
FOUND
POUND
MOUNDObviously hindsight makes every puzzle easier, but there are strategies that could have been taken here to minimize the risk of a loss.

u/xerocopi 4h ago
Wound has 2 pronuciations. Wound as injury and wound as in wrapped. English is weird.
12
u/ParamedicoAnonimo 4h ago
I've been speaking it all of my life and that one caught me slippin
7
u/Alex5672 4h ago
Well, "wound" have two meanings, theres "wound"(the one you're thinking of, and means to "hurt someone") and wound(pronounced like bound, and is past tense of wind, ie. to wind up)

u/Kaisonic 2h ago
It's very rare for a wordle answer to be repeated, so I usually check past wordle answers for what not to guess in cases like this.

•
u/N3koEye 41m ago
Shouldn't you be trying words with as many different letters as possible (different from the ones you already know) instead of insisting on more close words?
That's higher odds of finding that first letter no?
•
u/blitz-dropshot 39m ago
If you’re playing hard mode you have to keep green letters in place and always use yellow letters so it’s not an option.
•
u/Pndrizzy 19m ago

u/_Diskreet_ 4h ago
I haven’t played this game in ages, what’s hard mode and easy mode ?
4
u/Oops_All_Bans 4h ago
Ok, see how he has four green letters? In easy mode, your next guess can be any letters, not just the ones you got correct already. In hard mode, you have to continue with the letters you've already gotten correct.
3
u/jclahaie 4h ago
This is why you choose your words more carefully on hard mode, to avoid common traps like this
4
u/-EntropyIncarnate- 1h ago
For those that get stuck in this trap, if you have multiple options for a final letter, try a word with none of the existing letters you've tried.

I got lucky yesterday.
I have 3 goto words that I use in order if the previous word is blank. They contain the 15 most frequent letters. Mound just happens to be the second of those. Otherwise I might have been screwed too.
3
•
u/Lordhullothere 43m ago
A good trick to not fall into this trap is too think of all the different options ending in ound and try and fit as many into a word as you can. For example, if you did "whips" after sound then you would've eliminated 3 letters in one word.
•
u/Blacksmithkin 39m ago
Sharp hits 4, but unfortunately this was apparently in hard mode (forced to reuse green/yellow) so they were kinda just screwed.
•
u/BarooZaroo 17m ago
That only works in easy mode. Proper wordle requires you to use the letters/positions you've already solved.

Honestly, the dumb thing about hard mode is this situation isn't even a skill issue, just straight chance
12
u/swordofbling23 4h ago
From what I understand you don't try potential words that have multiple options that cause the above situation, so you have to be more creative with your word choices to eliminate as many letters without choosing words that can screw you over, that's just what I've heard from others and it makes sense, I'm happy to stay on regular mode
8
u/tyoder92 4h ago
Not exactly... If youre going to play hard mode you must be aware of the hard mode traps. OP walked right into it. You have to try other consonants before locking yourself into a trap.
4
u/doppelbach 4h ago
Well you can try to avoid guessing words with a dozen rhymes that early in the game. For instance never guess something ending in ---ER near the start.
2
u/2074red2074 4h ago
Then don't guess an _OUND word when you know you're likely to get locked into _OUND. You need to use N and O, try to get more letters by guessing things like PRION or SWOON.
2
u/MSter_official 4h ago
I'm mildly infuriated by the fact that the all the words after the first guess are pronounced with an AH sound except for wound
5
2
2
•
u/A_Very_Lonely_Waffle 52m ago
Once you find the -ound you gotta start making entirely unrelated words with a bunch of other letters to rule them out. Off the top of my head, if you follow sound with idk ‘humps’ or something you’re checking for hound, mound, and pound all in one
•
u/jay_thorn 43m ago
OP might be playing with "Hard Mode" turned on. Hard mode prevents you from not using green letters, among other restrictions.
→ More replies (1)
•
u/Max-Ray38 51m ago
Since you found all but the last letter on the second try and realizing there are a bunch of options, you should make word that uses as many of those letters in one word, eliminating more letters in one word rather than only a single letter in each word. BUMPS or WHOMP come to mind.
•
u/Exlife1up 37m ago
If youre ever in this situation, guess a word that has a lot of consonants, you could have guessed “SHEEP” and got rid of 3 options, then “WOMBS” or something like that to get rid of W and B and then once M was yellow you’d know it was Mound. With 2 guesses that would check twice as many consonants
Its easy to fall into the trap that every guess has to be closer and closer to the answer, sometimes straying away is fine, especially here where after sound you have 4 guesses left.
•
u/BarooZaroo 18m ago
The best starting strategy is to start with words with lots of vowels. So if you get un/lucky and get a bunch of vowels right in the first round, you have very few slots available to guess more consonants. Unless you happened to pick an M early on you would have been in a real tough spot, and since M is not one of the more common letters it would have been ill-advised to guess M that early anyway.

Good strategy is to use completly diffrent word made out of remaining letters. Like after sound try grive, grief, write or somerhing simmilar that check put lot of unused letters that narrow down the possible word. Extremly useful in these cases where word have same endings

In this scenario I will guess a totally new word with as many of the possible combinations of starter letters so I can whittle it down. For example your 3rd guess could’ve been “spawn” to eliminate sound, pound, wound in one try
